Calosoma inquisitor (Linnaeus, 1758) is a predatory beetle belonging to the ground-beetle family Carabidae. It is known in English as the Lesser Searcher Beetle and Caterpillar-hunter, names referring to its active search for and capture of caterpillars.

It is an effective natural predator because both the adults and larvae feed on other invertebrates. Unlike many ground-dwelling members of the family Carabidae, Calosoma inquisitor can climb trunks, bushes and trees in search of caterpillars among the foliage.

The scientific name Calosoma inquisitor remains accepted. Carl Linnaeus described the species in 1758 under the original name Carabus inquisitor. It was subsequently transferred to the genus Calosoma. The author’s name and year are therefore placed inside parentheses.

Description

The adult generally measures between 13 and 22 millimetres in length, although slightly larger specimens are reported by certain sources. Its body is elongated, robust and relatively flattened, enabling it to move rapidly both on the ground and through vegetation.

Its basic colour is dark and metallic, usually bronze or brownish-black. Depending on the angle of the light, the body displays green, bluish, copper or purple reflections. These metallic colours are frequently strongest along the margins of the pronotum and elytra.

The pronotum is noticeably wider than long. The elongated elytra bear numerous characteristic longitudinal grooves intersected by finer transverse sculpture, creating a reticulated or rectangular appearance.

The head possesses powerful mandibles adapted for capturing and dismembering prey. Its legs are long, black and well developed, allowing the beetle to run rapidly.

A specialised caterpillar hunter

Calosoma inquisitor feeds mainly on caterpillars and other insect larvae. Its prey includes caterpillars belonging to several moth families, particularly species that live and feed on trees and shrubs.

The adult beetle patrols the ground, trunks, branches and foliage. When it detects a caterpillar, it immobilises it with its powerful mandibles and begins feeding. It can also attack moth pupae and other small invertebrates it is capable of overpowering.

The larvae are also predatory. They live mainly in the soil, where they search for small insects, larvae and other invertebrates. The species therefore functions as a predator throughout all its active life stages.

Ecological importance

The presence of Calosoma inquisitor contributes to the natural regulation of caterpillar populations. In certain years, some moths undergo substantial population increases, and their caterpillars may cause significant defoliation of trees and shrubs.

This beetle forms part of the natural mechanism that limits such outbreaks. It should not, however, be presented as an organism capable of eliminating a pest species on its own. Its effect forms part of a much more complicated ecological network involving predatory insects, spiders, parasitoids, birds, reptiles and other organisms.

Insecticides can affect not only herbivorous insects but also their natural predators. Protecting species such as Calosoma inquisitor assists in maintaining natural ecological balances and the biological regulation of numerous insects.

Movement on the ground, in trees and through the air

Although it belongs to the ground beetles, Calosoma inquisitor is not restricted to the soil surface. It can climb trunks and branches with ease, following caterpillars feeding among the foliage.

It also possesses functional hindwings and is capable of flight. This ability helps it move between different trees and habitats, particularly where local caterpillar populations are abundant.

This characteristic distinguishes it from several other members of the family Carabidae that possess reduced wings or are unable to fly.

Defensive behaviour

When disturbed on a tree or shrub, the beetle may release its grip and fall to the ground, remaining temporarily motionless and making itself difficult for a predator to locate among leaves and low vegetation.

If threatened at close range, it can raise the front of its body and spread its powerful mandibles. This defensive posture is intended to discourage a potential predator.

It is not a venomous or dangerous insect to humans. Nevertheless, like many large predatory beetles, it may use its mandibles if captured and firmly restrained with bare hands.

Life cycle

Calosoma inquisitor undergoes complete metamorphosis consisting of four successive stages:

  1. egg,
  2. larva,
  3. pupa,
  4. adult beetle.

The female deposits her eggs in the soil. The emerging larvae are elongated, mobile and predatory. After completing their development, they enter the soil, where pupation takes place.

The adult can spend the unfavourable season inside the soil, beneath bark, in dry leaf litter or in other protected places. Its precise period of activity varies according to climate and food availability.

In Cyprus, where winter is milder than in central and northern Europe, adults may also appear during the winter months. The photographs in the original post were taken at Pomos on 10 February 2018.

Habitat

The species is mainly associated with woodland and semi-wooded environments, especially deciduous trees and habitats supporting populations of foliage-feeding caterpillars.

It may be found:

  • in woodland and along woodland edges,
  • in scrubland,
  • in tree plantations,
  • beneath bark and fallen timber,
  • within leaf litter,
  • on trunks and branches,
  • and occasionally in open areas close to trees.

Its presence can temporarily become more noticeable during years when caterpillar populations increase substantially.

The record from Pomos

The specimens shown in the original post were photographed at Pomos in the Paphos District on 10 February 2018 by George Konstantinou.

Pomos is surrounded by natural vegetation, scrub, cultivated land and woodland, creating a mosaic of habitats suitable for many predatory beetles. This record documents the presence of Calosoma inquisitor in Cyprus and the activity of an adult during winter.

The map link indicates Pomos and not the precise location where the beetle was found.

Geographical distribution

Calosoma inquisitor has an extensive Palaearctic distribution. It occurs across much of Europe, extending northwards to southern Scandinavia. Its range continues through North Africa, Asia Minor and the Caucasus towards Iran.

More easterly populations have been reported from parts of Siberia and eastern Asia, although the taxonomic treatment of some of these populations differs between sources. Certain populations may be recognised as separate species or subspecies.

Distinction from Calosoma sycophanta

Calosoma inquisitor can be confused with the related Calosoma sycophanta, which is also known as a caterpillar hunter. C. sycophanta is generally larger and displays more intense metallic green, copper or purple colours on its elytra.

Calosoma inquisitor is generally smaller, darker and less brightly coloured. Reliable identification should consider its size, the shape of the pronotum, elytral sculpture and other morphological characteristics.

Protection

The species should not be killed because it appears large or threatening. It is a beneficial predatory insect that contributes to the natural regulation of caterpillars and other invertebrates.

The main pressures that may affect its local populations include:

  • destruction or degradation of woodland habitats,
  • removal of dead wood and leaf litter,
  • forest fires,
  • extensive insecticide use,
  • and reductions in the species that constitute its prey.

Maintaining natural vegetation and organic material on the ground provides shelter for this species and many other beneficial invertebrates.
