Dermestes intermedius Kalík, 1951 is a small beetle belonging to the family Dermestidae. It is a member of the genus Dermestes, whose species are generally associated with dry animal remains and play an important role in decomposition and the recycling of organic matter.
There is no established English or Greek common name for this particular species. Its scientific name is therefore used exclusively.
The accepted taxonomic form for the European populations, including that of Cyprus, is frequently given as Dermestes intermedius intermedius Kalík, 1951. The second recognised subspecies, Dermestes intermedius iranicus Háva & Kalík, 1999, is recorded from Iran, Iraq and Syria.
The family Dermestidae
The family Dermestidae includes small to medium-sized beetles known for their ability to utilise dry organic material of animal origin. The larvae of many species can feed on:
- dead and dried insects,
- hair and feathers,
- skin and other keratinous materials,
- the remains of dead animals,
- dried meat or fish,
- and organic remains in bird or mammal nests.
Biology is not identical across the entire family. Some species live mainly in natural environments, while others can occur in warehouses, houses, museums or natural history collections.
Dermestes intermedius is considered primarily a free-living species. According to published scientific observations, it is believed to feed mainly on dead insects.
Description
Adult Dermestes intermedius measures approximately 6.5–8 millimetres in length. Its body is oval to elongated, slightly convex and covered with fine hairs.
The head is relatively small and is often partly concealed beneath the pronotum when the beetle is viewed from above. The antennae are short and terminate in a distinct club, a characteristic feature of many species belonging to the Dermestidae.
The pronotum is wider than long and narrows towards the head. The elytra cover the entire abdomen and are dark brown to almost black, with fine pubescence producing paler or irregular areas.
The underside and the colour patterns of the abdominal segments contain important diagnostic features. Precise separation from related species frequently requires examination under a stereomicroscope and, particularly in males, study of the genital structures.
Why its identification is difficult
Many species of Dermestes closely resemble one another in:
- size,
- general body shape,
- dark colour,
- distribution of hairs,
- and patterns on the underside of the abdomen.
Identification from a simple photograph of the upper surface is not always reliable. Specialists examine the pronotum, elytra, antennae, pubescence, abdominal underside and reproductive structures in combination.
The name intermedius comes from the Latin word meaning “intermediate”. It probably refers to the species’ morphological position between related forms, a feature that also reflects the difficulty of its identification.
Life cycle
Like all beetles, Dermestes intermedius undergoes complete metamorphosis and passes through four stages:
- egg,
- larva,
- pupa,
- adult beetle.
The female deposits her eggs close to a suitable food source. Dermestid larvae generally have an elongated body covered with dense hairs. These hairs provide protection and, in some species, form characteristic tufts at the posterior end of the body.
The larva passes through a succession of moults as it grows. Once fully developed, it searches for a protected place in which to pupate. It may enter cracks, hide beneath dry organic material or burrow into a soft substrate.
The adult beetle emerges from the pupa and searches for food and a mate, allowing the cycle to begin again.
Diet and decomposition
Available scientific information describes Dermestes intermedius as a free-living species believed to feed on dead insects. It therefore participates in the breakdown of dry animal material and the return of nutrients to the ecosystem.
The hard parts of many dead organisms decompose much more slowly than soft tissues. Dermestid larvae can utilise materials that remain after other decomposers have acted.
They consequently contribute to the final stages of natural decomposition. They are not useless or simply associated with dirt but form part of the natural system through which organic matter is recycled.
Presence among dead insects and in nests
A species feeding on dead insects may occur in many different microhabitats, including:
- beneath stones and timber,
- within dry leaf litter,
- inside tree cavities,
- close to dead invertebrates,
- in bird and small-mammal nests,
- or in other places where dry animal remains accumulate.
Nests are complicated microhabitats containing feathers, hair, food remnants, droppings and dead arthropods. They can therefore support numerous decomposer beetles.
There is insufficient published information, however, to associate Dermestes intermedius exclusively with a particular animal species or type of nest.
It should not be confused with every “museum beetle”
Certain Dermestidae are well known as pests of stored products or natural history collections. Their larvae can damage dried animals, insect collections, hides, furs, woollen textiles and feathers.
This does not mean that every dermestid is necessarily a domestic or museum pest. Available sources describe Dermestes intermedius primarily as a free-living species.
There is insufficient evidence to regard it as an important pest of stores or museums in Cyprus. Information concerning better-known species such as Dermestes maculatus, Dermestes lardarius or Dermestes ater should not automatically be attributed to it.
Relationship with forensic entomology
Certain Dermestes species appear during the advanced stages of decomposition and have been studied in forensic entomology. Their presence and developmental stage can, together with other evidence, assist investigations into the decomposition process.
Dermestes intermedius has been recorded in studies of carrion-associated beetles in parts of its range. Nevertheless, this does not mean that every individual is associated with a large carcass or a forensic case. In nature, it may utilise much smaller food sources, including dead insects.
Distribution
The nominate subspecies Dermestes intermedius intermedius has a mainly European and eastern Mediterranean distribution. It has been recorded in countries and regions including:
- Albania,
- Austria,
- Bulgaria,
- Croatia,
- Cyprus,
- Czechia,
- Germany,
- Greece and Crete,
- Hungary,
- Italy,
- Moldova,
- Romania,
- Serbia,
- Slovakia,
- Turkey,
- Ukraine,
- and parts of southern Russia and the Caucasus.
The subspecies Dermestes intermedius iranicus has a more easterly distribution and is reported from Iran, Iraq and Syria.
The record from Athienou
The specimen in the original post was photographed at Athienou in the Larnaca District on 9 February 2018 by George Konstantinou.
Athienou is surrounded by agricultural land, livestock holdings, uncultivated areas and seasonal natural vegetation. Such landscapes contain numerous microhabitats with dry organic material and dead insects that can be used by dermestid beetles.

Ecological importance
Although small and little known, Dermestes intermedius contributes to ecosystem function. By consuming dead insects and other dry animal remains, it assists:
- the breakdown of organic matter,
- the cleaning of microhabitats,
- nutrient recycling,
- and the functioning of food webs.
Decomposer organisms are essential components of natural ecosystems. Without them, dead organic materials would accumulate and nutrients would return to the soil much more slowly.
