Hemelytroblatta livida (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1865) – Fossorial Sand Cockroach – Cyprus
Text by George Konstantinou
Hemelytroblatta livida (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1865) is a distinctive soil-dwelling cockroach belonging to the family Corydiidae and the subfamily Corydiinae. It was originally described from Cyprus in 1865 and was subsequently recorded in several parts of the eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East and southwestern Asia.
In scientific literature it is described as a “fossorial sand cockroach”, referring to its adaptation for digging and living within the soil. This expression is also used collectively for several members of the subfamily Corydiinae and is not an exclusive vernacular name for this species.
Hemelytroblatta livida is a wild species of natural habitats and should not be confused with the cosmopolitan cockroaches that infest houses, warehouses, restaurants and sewage systems.
A cockroach adapted to life in the soil
Species of the subfamily Corydiinae occur mainly in dry and warm regions. Many spend most of their lives concealed beneath the soil surface, within loose earth, sand or plant debris.
Their bodies possess adaptations that facilitate digging and underground movement. Their legs are strong and bear spines, while the relatively flattened body is protected by a durable exoskeleton. The long, sensitive antennae help the insect detect obstacles, vibrations, odours and other information from its surroundings.
Remaining underground provides protection from intense sunlight, desiccation and numerous predators. It also helps the insect limit water loss, which is particularly important under the warm and dry conditions found in Cyprus.
Strong sexual dimorphism
Hemelytroblatta livida exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism, meaning that males and females differ considerably in appearance and way of life.
Adult males possess well-developed wings and can move by flying, principally at night. They have a more elongated body and actively search for females during the reproductive period. They may be attracted to artificial lights, as occurs in the males of other soil-dwelling cockroaches.
Females are wingless and possess a broader, more compact and flattened body. Their form is suited to digging and living beneath stones or within the soil. Because they remain concealed for long periods, they are much more difficult to find than males.
These differences are so pronounced that a male and a female could easily be mistaken for separate species by someone unfamiliar with their biology.
Nocturnal and secretive behaviour
During the day, Hemelytroblatta livida usually remains hidden beneath stones or within the soil. Its activity increases after sunset, when temperatures are lower and relative humidity is higher.
At night, males may be observed on low vegetation or collected in ground traps. Females are normally discovered by searching beneath stones and other natural shelters.
This secretive way of life is one reason why the species’ actual distribution and ecology remain relatively poorly known. The absence of observations in a particular area does not necessarily mean that the species is absent.
Diet and ecological role
Like many wild cockroaches, Hemelytroblatta livida is considered primarily a detritivorous or omnivorous insect. It probably feeds on decomposing vegetation, dry leaves, small organic remains and other food materials available in the soil.
Through its feeding activity, it participates in the decomposition of dead organic matter and the recycling of nutrients. It forms part of the complex community of organisms living within and upon the soil and contributes to the functioning of natural ecosystems.
The cockroach itself provides food for spiders, scorpions, centipedes, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals and insectivorous birds. It therefore occupies a natural and useful position within the food chain.
Reproduction and development
Like other cockroaches, Hemelytroblatta livida develops through incomplete metamorphosis. Nymphs hatch from the eggs and broadly resemble miniature wingless adults. As they grow, they undergo a succession of moults before reaching maturity.
In cockroaches, the eggs are generally enclosed within a protective capsule known as an ootheca. The details of the reproductive biology of H. livida in its natural habitat have not been adequately studied. The subterranean way of life of the females and immature stages makes direct observation particularly difficult.
It is not a household pest
The poor reputation associated with the few cosmopolitan cockroaches inhabiting buildings is unfairly extended to hundreds of wild species that have no connection with unhygienic places or sewage systems.
Hemelytroblatta livida is a characteristic wild, soil-dwelling cockroach. It is not known as a domestic pest, does not establish infestations inside buildings and is not associated with damage to stored food. Finding an individual near a house or an artificial light does not mean that it has colonised the building.
There is no reason to kill it. If an individual enters an indoor space, it can be carefully moved outside and released in a sheltered place containing soil, stones and natural vegetation.
Distribution of the species
Hemelytroblatta livida was described by the Swiss entomologist Carl Brunner von Wattenwyl in 1865, originally under a different genus. The placement of the author’s name and date within parentheses indicates that the species was subsequently transferred to the genus Hemelytroblatta, established by Lucien Chopard in 1929.
The species has been recorded in Cyprus, Greece and parts of the Middle East and southwestern Asia, including Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran. In 2023, its first DNA-confirmed record from Georgia was published. That study included photographs of the male and female and an analysis of DNA barcode sequences.
Its broad geographical range demonstrates that it is not endemic to Cyprus. The island nevertheless possesses particular taxonomic importance because Cyprus is the locality from which the species was originally described.
