Γ. Κωνσταντίνου: Τα ερπετά είναι ρυθμιστές, μην τα σκοτώνετε

«Έχουμε δύο περιστατικά δαγκώματος από φίνα τον χρόνο στην Κύπρο», δήλωσε στον ACTIVE ο Γιώργος Κωνσταντίνου, φυσιοδίφης - πρόεδρος Συνδέσμου Προστασίας Φυσικής Κληρονομιάς και Βιοποικιλότητας της Κύπρου. Εξήγησε ότι η φίνα είναι το μοναδικό δηλητηριώδες ερπετό της Κύπρου, «το οποίο δεν είναι επιθετικό, αφού για να σε δαγκώσει η φίνα, πρέπει να την πατήσεις κατά λάθος, να την πιάσεις με το χέρι σου, ή να την πλησιάσεις σε απόσταση αναπνοής».
«Υπάρχει παντού η φίνα», ανέφερε ο κύριος Κωνσταντίνου, σημειώνοντας ότι «είναι εύκολο να την αναγνωρίσουμε, λόγω του χοντρού της σώματος, του χρώματος γκρί της άμμου, του τριγωνικού της κεφαλιού και της ουράς που κόβεται απότομα από το χοντρό της σώμα. Aν πλησιάσει κανείς επικίνδυνα το εν λόγω ερπετό, θα ακούσει ένα χαρακτηριστικό σφύριγμα, το οποίο δύσκολα κανείς δεν ακούει και είναι σαν να προειδοποιεί το ερπετό να μην το πλησιάζεις». «Είναι η εποχή που όλα τα ερπετά είναι ενεργά μετά τον χειμώνα και κυκλοφορούν για ζευγάρωμα και τροφή, οπότε υπάρχουν μεγάλες πιθανότητες να τα συναντήσουμε κοντά σε ποτάμια ή στάσιμα νερά», επεσήμανε ο ειδικός για τα ερπετά. «Συνήθως το ίδιο το ερπετό τρέπεται σε φυγή», πρόσθεσε ο κύριος Κωνσταντίνου και συνέστησε σε όλους να μην σκοτώνουν ερπετά, τα οποία είναι οι ρυθμιστές της φύσης. «Χωρίς αυτά», είπε, «θα γεμίζαμε ποντίκια και διάφορα τρωκτικά».
Αν την συναντήσετε σπίτι σας, στην αυλή ή τη στέγη σας» καταλήγει, «ειδοποιήστε την Πυροσβεστική, η οποία με τη σειρά της θα καλέσει τους ειδικούς να απομακρύνουν το ερπετό».
G. Konstantinou: Reptiles Are Nature’s Regulators – Do Not Kill Them
“We have two incidents of bites by the blunt-nosed viper each year in Cyprus,” George Konstantinou, naturalist and President of the Association for the Protection of the Natural Heritage and Biodiversity of Cyprus, told ACTIVE. He explained that the blunt-nosed viper is the only venomous reptile in Cyprus and “is not aggressive, since for a viper to bite you, you would have to step on it accidentally, pick it up with your hand or approach it at an extremely close distance.”
“The blunt-nosed viper is found everywhere,” Mr Konstantinou said, noting that “it is easy to recognise because of its thick body, sandy-grey colour, triangular head and tail, which narrows abruptly from its thick body. If someone approaches the reptile dangerously closely, they will hear a characteristic hissing sound, which is difficult not to hear and is as though the reptile is warning them not to come any closer.”
“This is the season when all reptiles become active after the winter and move about in search of mates and food, so there is a strong possibility of encountering them near rivers or stagnant water,” the reptile expert pointed out.
“Usually, the reptile itself flees,” Mr Konstantinou added, advising everyone not to kill reptiles, which are nature’s regulators. “Without them,” he said, “we would be overrun by mice and various other rodents.”
“If you encounter one inside your home, in your garden or on your roof,” he concluded, “notify the Fire Service, which will in turn contact specialists to remove the reptile.”
