Murex mitraeformis Brocchi, 1814

Acamptochetus sp.

Acamptochetus και Metula

Στη σύγχρονη ταξινομική αντιμετώπιση, το Acamptochetus Cossmann, 1901 θεωρείται συνώνυμο του γένους Metula H. Adams & A. Adams, 1853.

Η ίδια αντιμετώπιση φαίνεται και στο World Register of Marine Species, όπου είδη που είχαν περιγραφεί ως Acamptochetus μεταφέρονται στο Metula.

Acamptochetus clatratus Báldi, 1966
Acamptochetus daphnelloides (Melvill & Standen, 1903)
Acamptochetus inflatus Houbrick, 1984
Acamptochetus recta Sacco, 1904
Acamptochetus submitraeformis (A. d'Orbigny, 1852)

Acamptochetus sp. – Fossil from Nicosia, Cyprus

Text by George Konstantinou

The Genus Acamptochetus

Acamptochetus is a genus name for marine gastropods encountered mainly in palaeontological and older malacological literature. The genus was established by the French palaeontologist Maurice Cossmann in 1901.

The type species of Acamptochetus was designated as:

Murex mitraeformis Brocchi, 1814

a fossil gastropod from the Pliocene of Italy. Modern palaeontological research confirms both the establishment of Acamptochetus by Cossmann in 1901 and this particular type species.

The fossil presented in this record comes from Nicosia, Cyprus and has been identified only at genus level as:

Acamptochetus sp.

The abbreviation sp. means that the specimen is assigned to Acamptochetus, without a secure identification of a particular species.

Acamptochetus and Metula

A particularly important point is that Acamptochetus is not generally considered a separate accepted genus today.

In modern taxonomy, Acamptochetus Cossmann, 1901 is regarded as a synonym of the genus Metula H. Adams & A. Adams, 1853. A recent revision of the Pliocene gastropods of Estepona specifically notes that European Tertiary species were traditionally placed in Acamptochetus, but that the currently accepted treatment considers it a synonym of Metula.

The same treatment is reflected in the World Register of Marine Species, where species formerly described under Acamptochetus have been transferred to Metula. For example, Acamptochetus submitraeformis is treated as Metula major and Acamptochetus inflatus as Metula inflata.

Therefore, within a modern taxonomic framework, a fossil recorded as Acamptochetus sp. may require re-examination regarding its possible placement in the genus Metula.

For the present record, however, we retain the name Acamptochetus sp. under which this particular fossil has been identified, without attempting identification at species level.

Shell Morphology

Gastropods historically placed in Acamptochetus are generally characterised by elongated to fusiform shells, with several whorls and distinctive surface sculpture.

One of their most important characteristics is the combination of axial and spiral sculptural elements. Axial ribs and spiral cords intersect and may produce a fine reticulate or lattice-like appearance on the shell surface.

In representatives of the Metula–Acamptochetus group, the sculpture can be particularly fine and dense, with the intersections between axial and spiral elements forming small projections.

The Protoconch

The morphology of the protoconch, the earliest whorls of the shell formed during the first stages of the animal's life, has historically been used as an important characteristic for distinguishing Acamptochetus.

Older descriptions of the genus mention a smooth protoconch with relatively few whorls and an inflated initial portion.

More recent studies of the wider Metula group, however, have demonstrated considerable variation in the protoconch. It may consist of approximately 2 to 4 whorls, while spiral sculpture may be present or absent in different species.

This is one of the reasons why the classification of this group has changed considerably over time.

The Aperture and Siphonal Canal

The shell aperture in gastropods of this group is generally elongated, with a siphonal canal developed at the lower end.

The overall shell shape, the proportions of the final whorl, the length of the siphonal region and the details of the surface sculpture are important characteristics for distinguishing between different species.

For this reason, a fossil in which the apex, aperture or sculpture is poorly preserved can be difficult to identify reliably at species level.

A Genus Known Mainly from Palaeontological Literature

The name Acamptochetus has been used for several fossil gastropods.

The fossil record of the wider Metula group is particularly rich, with an important presence during the Tertiary. Older revisions of the group have noted its impressive fossil record and its particularly significant occurrence during the Upper Tertiary.

Acamptochetus also appears in older lists and palaeontological publications as a fossil marine gastropod genus, although modern taxonomy places it within Metula.

Species That Have Been Placed in Acamptochetus

During the taxonomic history of the genus, various species have been placed in Acamptochetus.

Among them are:

Acamptochetus clatratus Báldi, 1966
Acamptochetus daphnelloides (Melvill & Standen, 1903)
Acamptochetus inflatus Houbrick, 1984
Acamptochetus recta Sacco, 1904
Acamptochetus submitraeformis (A. d'Orbigny, 1852)

However, several of these names have now been transferred to the genus Metula, while the status of some others remains uncertain or has not been fully evaluated.

This demonstrates why the fossil from Nicosia should not be assigned to any of these species without sufficient diagnostic characteristics.

Mode of Life

Precise biological information concerning species historically called Acamptochetus is limited.

Studies of related representatives of the Metula group have suggested that they were probably predators or scavengers, as is the case with several other neogastropods. However, because direct information concerning the biology of Acamptochetus itself is limited, this interpretation should be treated with caution.

In the case of a fossil identified only as Acamptochetus sp., detailed conclusions about the mode of life of the particular individual cannot be drawn solely from its identification at genus level.

The Importance of the Identification Acamptochetus sp.

Recording a fossil as Acamptochetus sp. is scientifically preferable to making an uncertain identification at species level.

Species within this group can show morphological similarities, and reliable distinction requires good preservation of important characteristics, including:

  • the form and number of the whorls,
  • the protoconch,
  • the axial ribs,
  • the spiral cords,
  • the shape of the final whorl,
  • the aperture,
  • and the siphonal region.

When these features are insufficiently preserved or diagnostic, identification at genus level is the safer approach.

Classification

Based on the traditional name used for this particular fossil:

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Mollusca
Class: Gastropoda
Group: Caenogastropoda
Order: Neogastropoda
Superfamily: Buccinoidea
Family: Colubrariidae
Genus: Acamptochetus Cossmann, 1901
Identification: Acamptochetus sp.
Type species of the genus: Murex mitraeformis Brocchi, 1814
Modern taxonomic treatment: Acamptochetus = synonym of Metula H. Adams & A. Adams, 1853
Specimen status: Fossil

Acamptochetus sp. from Nicosia

The fossil presented in this record comes from Nicosia, Cyprus and is retained as:

Acamptochetus sp.

It represents an interesting group of marine gastropods with a long fossil history and a complex taxonomic history. The name Acamptochetus, although frequently encountered in older palaeontological literature, is now treated as a synonym of the genus Metula.

In the present record, we restrict the identification to genus level. We do not attempt to assign the specimen to a particular species without sufficient diagnostic characteristics.
