Acteocina knockeri

Tornatina knockeri E. A. Smith, 1872

Acteocina knockeri (E. A. Smith, 1872).

Acteocina knockeri και Acteocina mucronata

Tornatina hemipleura

Tornatina hemipleura Fontannes, 1880

Acteocina knockeri (E. A. Smith, 1872) – Fossils from Nicosia, Cyprus

Text by George Konstantinou

Acteocina knockeri

Acteocina knockeri (E. A. Smith, 1872) is a very small marine gastropod belonging to the family Cylichnidae and the order Cephalaspidea. The species is known from both modern records and the fossil record. The name Acteocina knockeri (E. A. Smith, 1872) is currently recognised as accepted, while the species was originally described in a different genus.

The fossil presented in this record comes from Nicosia, Cyprus and has been identified as Acteocina knockeri (E. A. Smith, 1872).

The Original Description

The species was described in 1872 by the British zoologist and malacologist Edgar Albert Smith (1847–1916).

Its original name was:

Tornatina knockeri E. A. Smith, 1872

The species was later transferred to the genus Acteocina. For this reason, the author's name and the year of description are now placed in parentheses:

Acteocina knockeri (E. A. Smith, 1872).

In older literature, it may also be encountered under the name Utriculastra knockeri.

An Extremely Small Gastropod

One of the most characteristic features of Acteocina knockeri is its very small size.

Modern specimens are generally reported as measuring only a few millimetres in length. Published sources give measurements of approximately 2.5–5 mm, while an older study of marine molluscs from West Africa gives a size of approximately 3–5 mm.

Therefore, even a fully grown individual may possess a shell measuring less than half a centimetre.

This minute size means that fossil specimens can easily be overlooked during the collection and examination of fossiliferous sediments.

Shell Morphology

Despite its small size, the shell of Acteocina knockeri has a fairly characteristic morphology.

It is small, compact and cylindrical, with sides that are almost parallel to slightly convex. The spire is low but distinct, and the protoconch has a characteristic morphology.

Modern palaeontological descriptions of the species also record a protoconch of approximately 1.5 whorls, flattened and inclined.

The base of the shell narrows, while the aperture is elongated. Overall, the shell has the appearance of a tiny, narrow cylinder.

The Area Near the Suture

The morphology of the upper part of the whorls is particularly important for recognising the species.

In A. knockeri, there are small oblique axial folds near the suture. Some descriptions also mention ridges in the adapical region of the whorls, with the axial folds creating a characteristic sculptured appearance.

These details are very important because the general cylindrical shape can resemble that of other small species of Cephalaspidea.

For reliable identification, therefore, the spire, protoconch, suture, axial folds, aperture and overall proportions of the shell should all be examined.

The Shell Aperture

As is generally the case in Acteocina, the aperture is elongated, narrower towards the upper part and more expanded towards the base.

The columella bears a fold, another characteristic used in the morphological distinction of these small gastropods.

The shell may appear relatively simple externally, but the small details of the apex and aperture are of considerable taxonomic importance.

Acteocina knockeri and Acteocina mucronata

Particular care is required when distinguishing Acteocina knockeri from the similar Acteocina mucronata (Philippi, 1849).

The two forms show several similarities. A. mucronata has a characteristic projecting apex, a concave area below the suture and folds on the upper part of the final whorl.

Sources dealing with Mediterranean marine species have regarded A. knockeri as the species most closely resembling A. mucronata, while also noting their considerable morphological similarity.

This is particularly important when examining very small or incompletely preserved fossil specimens.

Tornatina hemipleura

An important aspect of modern taxonomic research concerns the name:

Tornatina hemipleura Fontannes, 1880

In a revision of the Pliocene Heterobranchia from Estepona in southern Spain, researchers concluded that Tornatina hemipleura represents a junior subjective synonym of Acteocina knockeri.

This conclusion was based, among other features, on the small oblique axial folds present on the upper part of the whorls.

This is important when consulting palaeontological literature because older records identified as Tornatina hemipleura may now be assigned to A. knockeri.

Fossils from the Pliocene

Acteocina knockeri is well documented from Pliocene marine deposits.

An important modern study presents fossils from Estepona in southern Spain, from the Lower Piacenzian of the Upper Pliocene. The illustrated specimens measure approximately 3.4–4.7 mm in height and 1.6–2.1 mm in width.

The species has also been identified in Pliocene sediments of Tuscany, Italy, where its occurrence was the subject of a specific publication.

A recent study from the Dahra Mountains of northwestern Algeria also recorded Acteocina knockeri in a Pliocene gastropod fauna, with an illustrated specimen measuring 3.0 mm in height and 1.4 mm in diameter.

Fossil Occurrence in the Mediterranean

The fossil history of the species is not restricted to the Pliocene.

Older literature on the molluscs of West Africa records Acteocina knockeri as being known in the fossil state from Quaternary Mediterranean deposits, while the living species is recorded along the western coast of Africa.

Its presence in both Pliocene and younger deposits demonstrates the considerable temporal history of the species.

A Species That Still Exists Today

Acteocina knockeri is not an extinct species.

Modern taxonomic sources retain it as an accepted species of the genus Acteocina.

Its modern records are mainly associated with the coasts of West Africa. Sources report its presence from Cape Verde to Angola, while older literature records a distribution extending from Mauritania to Angola.

Thus, as with certain other small marine gastropods, fossil specimens can be compared with modern shells belonging to the same species.

Colour of Modern Shells

In modern specimens, the shell is described as white.

In fossils, of course, the present colour of the shell is not necessarily evidence of the original colour of the living organism, since fossilisation processes and the chemical conditions of the surrounding sediment can significantly alter its appearance.

Acteocina knockeri from Nicosia

The fossil of Acteocina knockeri (E. A. Smith, 1872) presented in this record comes from Nicosia, Cyprus.

It is an extremely small but morphologically interesting marine gastropod, characterised by its cylindrical shell and fine structures around the sutures. The species is known from Pliocene fossils of the Mediterranean region and still survives today along the coasts of West Africa.

In the present article, we restrict the discussion to this particular species, without assigning a specific age, stratigraphic horizon or palaeoenvironment to the Nicosia specimen where these have not been documented for its particular locality.
