Cylichna cylindracea

Η Cylichna cylindracea (Pennant, 1777) είναι είδος μικρού θαλάσσιου γαστερόποδου μαλακίου της οικογένειας Cylichnidae. Σε αντίθεση με αρκετά από τα απολιθωμένα είδη που έχουμε παρουσιάσει, η C. cylindracea δεν είναι εξαφανισμένο είδος· εξακολουθεί να υπάρχει σήμερα και η ονομασία της αναγνωρίζεται ως αποδεκτή στη σύγχρονη ταξινομία.

Στα αγγλικά απαντά και με την κοινή ονομασία Cylinder shell, ονομασία που σχετίζεται άμεσα με το χαρακτηριστικό κυλινδρικό σχήμα του οστράκου.

Το απολίθωμα που παρουσιάζεται στην παρούσα καταγραφή προέρχεται από τη Λευκωσία της Κύπρου και έχει προσδιοριστεί ως Cylichna cylindracea (Pennant, 1777).

Η αρχική περιγραφή του είδους

Το είδος περιγράφηκε από τον Ουαλό φυσιοδίφη Thomas Pennant (1726–1798) το 1777.

Η αρχική του ονομασία ήταν:

Bulla cylindracea Pennant, 1777

Αργότερα το είδος μεταφέρθηκε στο γένος Cylichna, γι' αυτό και το όνομα του Pennant μαζί με το έτος περιγραφής εμφανίζονται σήμερα μέσα σε παρένθεση:

Η αλλαγή αυτή δεν σημαίνει ότι πρόκειται για διαφορετικό είδος. Αντανακλά την εξέλιξη της συστηματικής ταξινόμησης των θαλάσσιων γαστερόποδων από τον 18ο αιώνα μέχρι σήμερα.

Το χαρακτηριστικό κυλινδρικό όστρακο

Το όστρακο της Cylichna cylindracea είναι ιδιαίτερα χαρακτηριστικό λόγω του επιμήκους, στενού και σχεδόν κυλινδρικού σχήματός του.

Σε αντίθεση με τα κλασικά σπειροειδή όστρακα πολλών θαλάσσιων σαλιγκαριών, η σπείρα στην Cylichna είναι πολύ περιορισμένη εξωτερικά, με αποτέλεσμα το όστρακο να παρουσιάζει μια περισσότερο συμπαγή και κυλινδρική εμφάνιση.

Το σώμα του οστράκου είναι επίμηκες, με σχετικά παράλληλες πλευρές, ενώ το άνοιγμα εκτείνεται κατά μήκος μεγάλου μέρους του ύψους του.

Αυτός ο χαρακτηριστικός συνδυασμός μορφολογικών στοιχείων είναι που έδωσε στο είδος τόσο την επιστημονική ονομασία cylindracea όσο και την αγγλική κοινή ονομασία Cylinder shell.

Ένα κεφαλάσπιδο γαστερόποδο

Η Cylichna cylindracea ανήκει στα Cephalaspidea, μια ομάδα ετερόβραγχιων γαστερόποδων με ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέρουσα εξελικτική ιστορία.

Η σύγχρονη ταξινομική τοποθέτηση του είδους το εντάσσει στα Heterobranchia, στην ομάδα Tectipleura, στα Cephalaspidea και στην οικογένεια Cylichnidae.

Παλαιότερα πολλά τέτοια γαστερόποδα ήταν ευρύτερα γνωστά ως «bubble shells» εξαιτίας του λεπτού, σχετικά απλού και συχνά διογκωμένου ή κυλινδρικού οστράκου τους.

Μορφολογία και αναγνώριση

Για την αναγνώριση της Cylichna cylindracea είναι σημαντικό να εξετάζονται περισσότερα χαρακτηριστικά και όχι μόνο το γενικό κυλινδρικό περίγραμμα.

Ιδιαίτερη σημασία έχουν η αναλογία ύψους και πλάτους του οστράκου, η μορφή της κορυφής, το σχήμα της βάσης, η διαμόρφωση του ανοίγματος και η λεπτή γλυπτική της επιφάνειας.

Σε καλά διατηρημένα δείγματα, η συνολική μορφή είναι χαρακτηριστική: ένα σχετικά λεπτό και επιμήκες όστρακο με μεγάλο άνοιγμα και πολύ περιορισμένη εξωτερικά σπείρα.

Μουσειακά δείγματα του είδους στις συλλογές του Naturalis Biodiversity Center παρουσιάζουν καθαρά αυτή τη χαρακτηριστική μορφολογία.

Η ταξινομική ιστορία του είδους

Όπως συμβαίνει με πολλά είδη που περιγράφηκαν ήδη από τον 18ο αιώνα, η Cylichna cylindracea έχει αποκτήσει αρκετά διαφορετικά ονόματα κατά τη διάρκεια της ταξινομικής της ιστορίας.

Το όνομα αυτό εμφανίζεται σε παλαιότερη βιβλιογραφία και σε απολιθωμένο υλικό, αλλά σήμερα αντιμετωπίζεται ως συνώνυμο της Cylichna cylindracea (Pennant, 1777).

Αυτό έχει σημασία όταν εξετάζουμε παλιές παλαιοντολογικές εργασίες, επειδή ένα απολίθωμα που καταγράφηκε ιστορικά ως Bulla convoluta μπορεί στη σύγχρονη ταξινομία να αναφέρεται ως Cylichna cylindracea.

Η περίπτωση αυτή δείχνει πόσο σημαντικό είναι στα απολιθώματα να εξετάζουμε όχι μόνο το όνομα που χρησιμοποιήθηκε στην αρχική δημοσίευση αλλά και τη μεταγενέστερη ταξινομική ιστορία του είδους.

Ένα είδος που επέζησε μέχρι σήμερα

Ένα από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα στοιχεία της Cylichna cylindracea είναι ότι το είδος εξακολουθεί να υπάρχει στις σημερινές θάλασσες.

Δεν έχουμε επομένως μόνο απολιθωμένα κελύφη ενός εξαφανισμένου οργανισμού. Έχουμε ένα είδος που είναι γνωστό από το απολιθωματοφόρο αρχείο αλλά έχει επιβιώσει μέχρι τη σύγχρονη εποχή.

Η παρουσία σύγχρονων δειγμάτων σε φυσιογνωστικές συλλογές και οι σημερινές βιολογικές καταγραφές επιβεβαιώνουν ότι πρόκειται για ζωντανό είδος.

Αυτό επιτρέπει επίσης στους παλαιοντολόγους να συγκρίνουν απολιθωμένα όστρακα με σύγχρονο υλικό του ίδιου είδους.

Η σύγχρονη παρουσία στη Μεσόγειο

Η Cylichna cylindracea είναι γνωστή και από τη σύγχρονη Μεσόγειο Θάλασσα.

Έχει καταγραφεί, μεταξύ άλλων, από την ανατολική Μεσόγειο, συμπεριλαμβανομένων επιστημονικών καταγραφών από τον Λίβανο.

Η σημερινή παρουσία του είδους στη Μεσόγειο έχει ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον όταν συγκρίνεται με τα απολιθωμένα δείγματά του, καθώς δείχνει τη μεγάλη χρονική συνέχεια του taxon.

Η σημασία των απολιθωμένων δειγμάτων

Τα απολιθωμένα όστρακα της Cylichna cylindracea μπορούν να προσφέρουν χρήσιμες πληροφορίες για την ιστορία και τη γεωγραφική εξάπλωση του είδους.

Επειδή το είδος υπάρχει ακόμη σήμερα, μπορεί να γίνει άμεση σύγκριση μεταξύ απολιθωμένου και σύγχρονου υλικού, ιδιαίτερα ως προς τη μορφολογία του οστράκου.

Προσοχή στην ταυτοποίηση

Το σχετικά απλό κυλινδρικό σχήμα του οστράκου μπορεί να θυμίζει άλλα μικρά κεφαλάσπιδα γαστερόποδα.

Για τον λόγο αυτό, ο ασφαλής προσδιορισμός ενός απολιθωμένου δείγματος πρέπει να λαμβάνει υπόψη το σύνολο των μορφολογικών χαρακτηριστικών και όχι μόνο το γενικό περίγραμμα.

Η κατάσταση διατήρησης είναι επίσης σημαντική. Η φθορά της κορυφής, του ανοίγματος ή της επιφανειακής γλυπτικής μπορεί να αφαιρέσει χαρακτηριστικά που είναι χρήσιμα για την ακριβή ταυτοποίηση.

Cylichna cylindracea από τη Λευκωσία

Το απολίθωμα της Cylichna cylindracea (Pennant, 1777) που παρουσιάζεται στην παρούσα καταγραφή προέρχεται από τη Λευκωσία της Κύπρου.

Πρόκειται για ένα ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέρον μικρό θαλάσσιο γαστερόποδο, με χαρακτηριστικό κυλινδρικό όστρακο και μακρά ταξινομική ιστορία που ξεκινά από την αρχική περιγραφή του ως Bulla cylindracea το 1777.

Ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζει το γεγονός ότι, σε αντίθεση με πολλά άλλα απολιθώματα της σειράς, η Cylichna cylindracea δεν είναι εξαφανισμένη, αλλά αποτελεί αποδεκτό σύγχρονο είδος.

Cylichna cylindracea

Cylichna cylindracea (Pennant, 1777) is a species of small marine gastropod mollusc belonging to the family Cylichnidae. Unlike several of the fossil species we have presented, C. cylindracea is not extinct; it still exists today and its name is recognised as accepted in modern taxonomy.

In English it is also known by the common name Cylinder shell, a name directly related to the characteristic cylindrical shape of its shell.

The fossil presented in this record comes from Nicosia, Cyprus and has been identified as Cylichna cylindracea (Pennant, 1777).

The Original Description of the Species

The species was described by the Welsh naturalist Thomas Pennant (1726–1798) in 1777.

Its original name was:

Bulla cylindracea Pennant, 1777

The species was later transferred to the genus Cylichna, which is why Pennant's name and the year of description are now placed in parentheses:

Cylichna cylindracea (Pennant, 1777).

This change does not mean that it is a different species. It reflects the development of the systematic classification of marine gastropods from the 18th century to the present day.

The Characteristic Cylindrical Shell

The shell of Cylichna cylindracea is particularly distinctive because of its elongated, narrow and almost cylindrical shape.

Unlike the typical spirally coiled shells of many marine snails, the spire in Cylichna is very limited externally, giving the shell a more compact and cylindrical appearance.

A Cephalaspidean Gastropod

The modern taxonomic placement of the species places it within the Heterobranchia, the group Tectipleura, the Cephalaspidea, and the family Cylichnidae.

In the past, many such gastropods were more broadly known as “bubble shells” because of their thin, relatively simple and often inflated or cylindrical shells.

Morphology and Identification

For the identification of Cylichna cylindracea, it is important to examine several characteristics rather than relying only on the general cylindrical outline.

Particularly important features include the height-to-width ratio of the shell, the form of the apex, the shape of the base, the configuration of the aperture and the fine sculpture of the shell surface.

In well-preserved specimens, the overall form is characteristic: a relatively slender and elongated shell with a large aperture and a very reduced externally visible spire.

Museum specimens of the species clearly demonstrate this characteristic morphology.

This is important when examining older palaeontological publications, because a fossil historically recorded as Bulla convoluta may be referred to as Cylichna cylindracea under modern taxonomy.

This case demonstrates how important it is, when studying fossils, to examine not only the name used in the original publication but also the subsequent taxonomic history of the species.

A Species That Survived to the Present Day

The relatively simple cylindrical shape of the shell can resemble that of other small cephalaspidean gastropods.

For this reason, reliable identification of a fossil specimen should take into account the complete set of morphological characteristics rather than only its general outline.

The state of preservation is also important. Damage to the apex, aperture or surface sculpture may remove features that are useful for precise identification.
