Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides
Fusus nassoides Grateloup, 1827
Orthurella nassoides (Grateloup, 1827).
Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides (Grateloup, 1827).

Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides
Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides (Grateloup, 1827) is an extinct species of marine gastropod mollusc belonging to the family Columbellidae, known from the fossil record.
It is a relatively small, elongated gastropod with a characteristic fusiform shell. The species has been referred to in the literature under different taxonomic combinations, reflecting changes in the classification of the Columbellidae over time.
Of particular importance to the present record is the fact that Mitrella nassoides has also been recorded in a palaeontological study concerning the fossils of Cyprus.
The Original Description of the Species
The species was described by the French naturalist and palaeontologist Jean-Pierre Sylvestre de Grateloup in 1827.
Its original name was:
Fusus nassoides Grateloup, 1827
Later, as the systematic classification of gastropods developed, the species was transferred to other taxonomic groups and appeared in the literature as Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides, among other combinations.
Older systematic literature specifically records Fusus nassoides Grateloup, 1827 as the type species of the subgenus Macrurella.
The Subgenus Macrurella
The name Macrurella was introduced by Federico Sacco towards the end of the 19th century and was used as a subgenus for characteristic fossil Columbellidae.
nassoides is of particular taxonomic importance because it has been designated as the type species of Macrurella.
For this reason, the combination Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides is frequently encountered in older palaeontological literature.
Shell Morphology
The shell of the species is elongated, narrow and fusiform, with a relatively high and pointed spire.
The whorls increase gradually, and the final part of the shell is elongated. The base narrows towards the siphonal region, producing the characteristic slender form of the species.
The surface may display fine growth lines and spiral sculptural elements. Material attributed to closely related forms within the nassoides complex has been described as having a slender fusiform shell with 5–6 whorls, distinct oblique sutures and a relatively inflated final whorl.
Size
Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides was a relatively small marine gastropod.
In published fossil material from Italy, where 154 specimens were examined, the shells measured approximately 24–34 mm in height and 8–12 mm in width.
These measurements indicate a slender and considerably elongated shell, with its height significantly greater than its width.
Naturally, these dimensions refer to the published material from that particular locality and do not mean that every individual of the species reached exactly the same size.
Characteristics Useful for Identification
Identification of the species depends on a combination of morphological characteristics rather than simply the general shape of the shell.
Important features include:
- the elongated fusiform outline,
- the relatively high and pointed spire,
- the shape and development of the whorls,
- the form of the final whorl,
- the narrowed basal region,
- the siphonal part of the aperture,
- and the fine sculpture of the shell surface.
The preservation of these characteristics is particularly important in fossil specimens, because erosion or breakage of the aperture and apex can make precise identification considerably more difficult.
Taxonomic History of the Species
The classification of nassoides has changed several times.
In older literature it can be found as Fusus nassoides, Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides and under other combinations within genera of the Columbellidae.
More recent literature has also used the name:
Orthurella nassoides (Grateloup, 1827).
At the same time, databases and palaeontological sources are not completely uniform concerning its generic placement, and the species has also appeared as Mitrella (Atilia) nassoides or Atilia nassoides.
For the present record, we retain the name accompanying the fossil:
Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides (Grateloup, 1827).
A Species with an Interesting Geographical Distribution
nassoides and forms historically attributed to it have been recorded from various Neogene marine deposits of Europe and the wider Mediterranean region.
Historical records of Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides include occurrences from France and other European regions. Older systematic literature records the species from localities including Saucats, Saint-Paul-lès-Dax, Saint-Jean-de-Marsacq and Saubrigues in France.
However, the long taxonomic history of the species means that older geographical and stratigraphical records need to be evaluated carefully in light of more recent taxonomic revisions.
Records from the Pliocene of the Mediterranean
The name Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides has also been used for fossils from Pliocene deposits of the western Mediterranean.
One example comes from the Nice region of southern France, where a fossil under this name has been reported from the Pliocene Blue Marls of the Cagnes-sur-Mer area.
More recent revisions, however, have indicated that some Pliocene forms historically identified as M. nassoides may represent different but related taxa.
This provides another reason why the taxonomic history of the species requires careful consideration.
Preserved Traces of the Original Colour Pattern
A particularly interesting characteristic has been detected in some fossil shells attributed to Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides.
Using ultraviolet light, researchers have observed remnants of the original colour pattern of the shell.
The pattern consists of dark spots against a light fluorescent background. The spots vary in shape and size and are arranged in spiral rows, particularly towards the lower part of the whorls.
Such observations are especially valuable because most fossil shells lose their visible original colouration during the fossilisation process.
The Presence of the Species in Cyprus
There is an important published palaeontological reference for Cyprus.
In a report on the palaeontology of Cyprus hosted by the Geological Survey Department, Mitrella nassoides (Grateloup, 1827) is included among the identified gastropods.
This record is significant for documenting the presence of the taxon in the fossil fauna of Cyprus.

Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides from Nicosia
The fossil of Mitrella (Macrurella) nassoides (Grateloup, 1827) presented in this record comes from Nicosia, Cyprus.
It is an interesting extinct marine gastropod of the Columbellidae, characterised by its elongated shell and particularly complex taxonomic history.
The occurrence of the name Mitrella nassoides in a palaeontological record from Cyprus is important evidence for the presence of this taxon in the fossil record of the island.
In the present article, we restrict the discussion exclusively to this particular species, without expanding into general information about the fossils of Nicosia or assigning an age, stratigraphic horizon or palaeoenvironment to this particular specimen that has not been documented for its locality.
