Mitrella thiara

Murex thiara Brocchi, 1814

Murex thiara Brocchi, 1814

Columbella thiara

και:

Mitrella (Crenisutura) thiara.

Thiarella thiara (Brocchi, 1814)

Mitrella thiara (Brocchi, 1814) – Fossils from Nicosia, Cyprus

Text by George Konstantinou

Mitrella thiara

Mitrella thiara (Brocchi, 1814) is an extinct species of marine gastropod mollusc known exclusively from the fossil record. It belongs to the family Columbellidae, a large family of small to relatively small marine snails.

In older palaeontological literature, the species appears under different combinations of names, including Murex thiara, Columbella thiara and Mitrella (Crenisutura) thiara. In more recent databases it has also been recorded as Mitrella thiara (Brocchi, 1814).

The Original Description of the Species

The species was first described in 1814 by the Italian naturalist and palaeontologist Giovanni Battista Brocchi (1772–1826).

Brocchi originally described it under the name:

Murex thiara Brocchi, 1814

in his important work Conchiologia fossile subapennina, which dealt with fossil shells from Italian deposits. The original reference appears in the second volume, on page 424 and Plate VIII, figure 6.

The presence of Brocchi's name in parentheses in the current combination — Mitrella thiara (Brocchi, 1814) — indicates that the species was originally described in a different genus and was later transferred to Mitrella.

Shell Morphology

Mitrella thiara had a characteristic narrow, elongated and turreted to fusiform shell.

Palaeontological material attributed to the species shows particularly characteristic sculpture. The whorls bear axial ribs, while small projections or nodules may occur near the sutures. Fine linear sculpture can also be observed on the shell surface.

The aperture is relatively narrow and elongated, while the lower part forms a siphonal canal, a feature associated with the morphology of many neogastropods.

Size

Mitrella thiara was a relatively small gastropod.

Published fossil material includes specimens measuring approximately 19–22 millimetres in height and 7–8 millimetres in width.

Other well-documented Pliocene specimens examined in a modern revision reach approximately 25.6 mm in height and 8.9 mm in width.

It was therefore a small but quite distinctive fossil gastropod.

A Species with a Distinctive Shell

The ornamentation of the shell is particularly interesting.

The axial ribs and structures near the sutures create a characteristic sculptured surface. This morphology is important for distinguishing the species from other similar fossil Columbellidae.

However, as with many small fossil gastropods, reliable identification should not be based solely on the general outline of the shell. Examination of the protoconch, sculpture, sutures, aperture and siphonal region is also important.

Taxonomic History

The taxonomic history of Mitrella thiara is quite interesting and reflects changes in the classification of fossil gastropods during the last two centuries.

The species began as:

Murex thiara Brocchi, 1814

and later appeared in the literature as:

Columbella thiara

and:

Mitrella (Crenisutura) thiara.

This does not necessarily mean that these names represent different species. In many cases, different combinations reflect changes in researchers' views concerning which genus or subgenus best represents the morphological and evolutionary relationships of a species.

An Important Modern Taxonomic Observation

The classification of this particular species requires some attention.

In a modern palaeontological revision published in 2023, the species is treated as:

Thiarella thiara (Brocchi, 1814)

and Pliocene specimens from Estepona in Spain are presented under this combination.

This indicates that some modern scientific literature places the species in the genus Thiarella rather than Mitrella.

For the present record, however, we retain the name Mitrella thiara (Brocchi, 1814) under which the fossil has been identified, while also noting this more recent taxonomic treatment.

Geological Occurrence

Mitrella thiara is known from Neogene marine deposits of Europe and the Mediterranean region.

Records from the Pliocene are particularly important. The species has, for example, been recorded from Pliocene deposits in Italy, southern France and Spain.

Historical Italian collections contain material attributed to the species from the Piacenzian of the Pliocene, while a modern study from Spain presents specimens from the Lower Piacenzian, Upper Pliocene.

Records from France

The species has also been found in the rich Pliocene deposits of the Nice region in southern France.

Fossils recorded as Mitrella (Crenisutura) thiara are known from the famous Marnes bleues – Blue Marls of the Saint-Martin-du-Var area, which contain an exceptionally rich fauna of marine molluscs.

These records help us understand the geographical distribution of the species in the ancient seas of the Mediterranean region.

Marine Environment of the Species

The occurrence of Mitrella thiara in Pliocene marine deposits shows that it formed part of the rich gastropod communities inhabiting the seas of the Mediterranean region during the Neogene.

Some European records of the species come from deposits interpreted as representing deeper marine environments, but this does not mean that every occurrence of M. thiara necessarily represents the same depth or exactly the same ecological conditions.

For the palaeoenvironmental interpretation of a particular fossil, the geological formation, stratigraphic horizon and associated fossil assemblage must always be considered.

Traces of Predation on Fossil Shells

A particularly interesting feature has been observed on some fossil specimens of Mitrella thiara.

In a palaeontological collection containing hundreds of specimens of the species, some shells have been recorded with traces identified as Oichnus paraboloides. These are characteristic holes interpreted as predatory drill holes produced by other organisms.

Such traces are valuable because a fossil may preserve not only the morphology of the animal itself but also evidence of interactions between organisms within an ancient ecosystem.

Mitrella thiara from Nicosia

The fossil of Mitrella thiara (Brocchi, 1814) presented in this record comes from Nicosia, Cyprus.

It is a characteristic small marine gastropod with interesting shell morphology and a long taxonomic history. Its occurrence in Pliocene deposits in several parts of the Mediterranean region makes it particularly interesting for the study of Neogene marine molluscs.

In the present article, we restrict the discussion exclusively to this particular species, without assigning additional information concerning the age, stratigraphic horizon or palaeoenvironment of the Nicosia specimen that cannot be established from the specimen itself and the available evidence.
