Το ξωκλήσι των Αγίων Αναργύρων
Το ξωκλήσι των Αγίων Αναργύρων Κοσμά και Δαμιανού βρίσκεται στην περιοχή του χωριού χωριό Άγιος Θεόδωρος της επαρχίας Λάρνακας και αποτελεί ένα από τα παλαιότερα μικρά θρησκευτικά μνημεία της κοινότητας.
Σύμφωνα με το Κοινοτικό Συμβούλιο Αγίου Θεοδώρου, βρίσκεται περίπου τρία χιλιόμετρα από τον πυρήνα του χωριού. Πρόκειται για ένα μικρό πετρόκτιστο εκκλησάκι που εντάσσεται αρμονικά στο αγροτικό τοπίο της περιοχής.
Η ιστορία του ξωκλησιού
Το ξωκλήσι κτίστηκε το 1919 με ιδιωτική δαπάνη. Η επίσημη ιστοσελίδα της κοινότητας αναφέρει ως δωρητή τον Δαμιανό Χατζηγεωργίου, ενώ ο τουριστικός οδηγός της ίδιας κοινότητας αναγράφει το όνομα ως Δαμιανό Χατζηκουμή. Επειδή υπάρχει αυτή η διαφορά στις δύο επίσημες πηγές, είναι ασφαλέστερο να κρατήσουμε ως βέβαιο ότι το εκκλησάκι ανεγέρθηκε το 1919 με δαπάνη του Δαμιανού που αναφέρεται στις τοπικές πηγές.
Περισσότερο από έναν αιώνα μετά την ανέγερσή του, το μικρό αυτό ξωκλήσι εξακολουθεί να αποτελεί χώρο λατρείας και προσκυνήματος για τους κατοίκους και τους επισκέπτες της περιοχής.
Αρχιτεκτονική
Το ξωκλήσι είναι μικρών διαστάσεων και κατασκευασμένο από πέτρες της περιοχής ακανόνιστου σχήματος, χαρακτηριστικό που του προσδίδει την απλή και αυθεντική εμφάνιση των παραδοσιακών αγροτικών ξωκλησιών της Κύπρου.
Η στέγη του είναι ξύλινη και αμφικλινής, καλυμμένη με κεραμίδια. Το κτίσμα διαθέτει δύο εισόδους, ενώ στο εσωτερικό βρίσκεται ξυλόγλυπτο εικονοστάσι με μικρό αριθμό εικόνων.
Η λιτότητα της κατασκευής του αντανακλά τον χαρακτήρα πολλών μικρών εξωκκλησιών της κυπριακής υπαίθρου, τα οποία κατασκευάζονταν με τοπικά υλικά και εξυπηρετούσαν τις θρησκευτικές ανάγκες των κατοίκων των γύρω αγροτικών περιοχών.
Η ανακαίνιση του 2006
Το ξωκλήσι ανακαινίστηκε το 2006, διατηρώντας τον παραδοσιακό του χαρακτήρα.
Ο μικρός αυλόγυρος επιστρώθηκε με μεγάλες λευκές πλακόπετρες, ενώ στη νότια πλευρά του χώρου πραγματοποιήθηκε πέτρινη επένδυση.
Στη δυτική άκρη κατασκευάστηκε επίσης ένα χαμηλό πέτρινο καμπαναριό, δίπλα από μια βρύση. Οι παρεμβάσεις αυτές διαμόρφωσαν τον περιβάλλοντα χώρο χωρίς να αλλοιώσουν τον λιτό αγροτικό χαρακτήρα του ξωκλησιού.
Το αγίασμα και η εικόνα των Αγίων Αναργύρων
Ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζει η παράδοση που συνδέεται με την περιοχή γύρω από το ξωκλήσι.
Σύμφωνα με την επίσημη καταγραφή των τοπωνυμίων του Αγίου Θεοδώρου, δίπλα από το ξωκλήσι βρέθηκαν αγίασμα και εικόνισμα των Αγίων Αναργύρων. Η παρουσία του ξωκλησιού έδωσε επίσης το όνομα «Άγιοι Ανάργυροι» στην ευρύτερη τοποθεσία.
Έτσι, η ονομασία των Αγίων Αναργύρων δεν περιορίζεται μόνο στο ίδιο το εκκλησάκι αλλά έχει περάσει και στην τοπωνυμία της κοινότητας, αποτελώντας μέρος της τοπικής ιστορικής και θρησκευτικής παράδοσης.
Οι Άγιοι Ανάργυροι Κοσμάς και Δαμιανός
Το ξωκλήσι είναι αφιερωμένο στους Αγίους Κοσμά και Δαμιανό, γνωστούς στην Ορθόδοξη παράδοση ως Άγιοι Ανάργυροι.
Η ονομασία «Ανάργυροι» συνδέεται με την παράδοση ότι οι Άγιοι προσέφεραν θεραπεία στους ασθενείς χωρίς να δέχονται χρήματα ως αμοιβή. Για τον λόγο αυτό καθιερώθηκαν ως πρότυπα ανιδιοτελούς προσφοράς και συνδέθηκαν ιδιαίτερα με τη θεραπεία και τη φροντίδα των ασθενών.
Η λατρεία των Αγίων Αναργύρων είναι ιδιαίτερα διαδεδομένη στην Κύπρο, όπως και στον υπόλοιπο ορθόδοξο κόσμο, με πολλές εκκλησίες και μικρά ξωκλήσια να είναι αφιερωμένα στη μνήμη τους.
Η γιορτή των Αγίων Αναργύρων
Στο συγκεκριμένο ξωκλήσι η μνήμη των Αγίων Αναργύρων τιμάται την 1η Νοεμβρίου.
Την ημέρα αυτή τελείται Θεία Λειτουργία στο εκκλησάκι και οι πιστοί προσέρχονται για να τιμήσουν τους Αγίους Κοσμά και Δαμιανό. Η τοπική κοινότητα αναφέρεται επίσης στους Αγίους Αναργύρους ως θαυματουργούς.
Το ξωκλήσι δεν χρησιμοποιείται μόνο κατά την ημέρα της εορτής. Σύμφωνα με το Κοινοτικό Συμβούλιο, παραμένει καθημερινά ανοικτό για προσκύνημα.
Το ξωκλήσι μέσα στο τοπίο του Αγίου Θεοδώρου
Ο Άγιος Θεόδωρος είναι κτισμένος στις όχθες του ποταμού Πεντάσχοινου, σε μια περιοχή όπου το φυσικό τοπίο συνδέεται στενά με την αγροτική και θρησκευτική ιστορία της κοινότητας.
Μικρά ξωκλήσια όπως αυτό των Αγίων Αναργύρων αποτελούσαν για πολλές γενιές σημεία αναφοράς στην ύπαιθρο. Η παρουσία τους συνδέθηκε συχνά τόσο στενά με τον τόπο ώστε το όνομα του Αγίου ή της εκκλησίας να μετατραπεί τελικά σε όνομα ολόκληρης περιοχής.
Αυτό ακριβώς συνέβη και εδώ, αφού η περιοχή γύρω από το ξωκλήσι είναι γνωστή ως Άγιοι Ανάργυροι.
Ένα μικρό μνημείο της κυπριακής υπαίθρου
Παρά τις μικρές του διαστάσεις, το ξωκλήσι των Αγίων Αναργύρων αποτελεί σημαντικό κομμάτι της θρησκευτικής και πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς του Αγίου Θεοδώρου.
Η κατασκευή του το 1919, η παραδοσιακή πέτρινη αρχιτεκτονική, το ξυλόγλυπτο εικονοστάσι, η ανακαίνιση του 2006, το αγίασμα και η παράδοση που συνδέεται με την εικόνα των Αγίων δημιουργούν μια ιστορία που ξεπερνά το ίδιο το μικρό οικοδόμημα.
Η καταγραφή και φωτογράφιση τέτοιων ξωκλησιών είναι σημαντική για τη διατήρηση της γνώσης γύρω από τα θρησκευτικά μνημεία, τα τοπωνύμια, την παραδοσιακή αρχιτεκτονική και την ιστορία της κυπριακής υπαίθρου.

The Chapel of Agioi Anargyroi
The Chapel of Agioi Anargyroi, Saints Cosmas and Damian, is located in the area of Agios Theodoros village in the Larnaca District of Cyprus and is one of the small historic religious monuments of the community.
According to information published by the Agios Theodoros Community Council, the chapel is situated approximately three kilometres from the centre of the village. It is a small stone-built country chapel that blends naturally into the rural landscape of the area.
History of the Chapel
The chapel was built in 1919 with private funding.
More than a century after its construction, this small rural chapel continues to serve as a place of worship and pilgrimage for the inhabitants of Agios Theodoros and visitors to the area.
Its survival is also an example of the numerous small chapels scattered throughout the Cypriot countryside, many of which were constructed through private donations and the religious devotion of local families.
Architecture
The chapel is small in size and constructed from irregularly shaped local stone, giving it the simple and traditional appearance characteristic of many rural chapels in Cyprus.
It has a wooden pitched roof covered with tiles and two entrances.
Inside the chapel is a wood-carved iconostasis containing a relatively small number of religious icons. The simplicity of both the exterior and interior reflects the modest character of traditional country chapels, which were built primarily as places of worship rather than monumental ecclesiastical buildings.
The Restoration of 2006
The Chapel of Agioi Anargyroi was renovated in 2006, while its traditional architectural character was preserved.
The small courtyard was paved with large white stone slabs, while stonework was also added along the southern side of the surrounding area.
At the western end, a low stone bell tower was constructed beside a fountain. These improvements helped preserve and enhance the chapel and its surroundings without removing the simple rural character of the site.
The Holy Water and the Icon
A particularly interesting local tradition is associated with the area surrounding the chapel.
According to information recorded in the place-name history of Agios Theodoros, holy water and an icon of Agioi Anargyroi were discovered beside the chapel.
The chapel also gave its name to the surrounding locality, which became known as Agioi Anargyroi.
This is an interesting example of the close relationship between religious monuments and the traditional place names of rural Cyprus. Small churches and chapels often became permanent geographical reference points, and their names eventually came to identify entire areas of countryside.
Saints Cosmas and Damian – Agioi Anargyroi
The chapel is dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian, who are traditionally known in the Orthodox Church as the Agioi Anargyroi.
The Greek word Anargyroi literally refers to those who accepted no silver or money. According to Christian tradition, Cosmas and Damian practised medicine and offered healing to the sick without accepting payment for their services.
For this reason, they became associated particularly with healing, medicine and selfless service to others.
The veneration of the Agioi Anargyroi is widespread in Cyprus and throughout the Orthodox Christian world, and numerous churches and rural chapels on the island are dedicated to them.
Feast Day
At this particular chapel, the feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian is celebrated on 1 November.
A Divine Liturgy is held at the chapel on their feast day, when worshippers gather to honour the saints.
The chapel is not associated only with its annual religious celebration. According to information published by the local community, it is also open daily for pilgrims and visitors wishing to worship.
The Chapel and the Landscape of Agios Theodoros
Agios Theodoros is situated along the Pentashoinos River, within an area where the natural landscape is closely connected with the agricultural, cultural and religious history of the community.
Small rural chapels such as Agioi Anargyroi served for generations as important landmarks throughout the countryside. Farmers, shepherds and travellers knew these places well, and the chapels frequently became reference points for surrounding fields, roads and localities.
The Chapel of Agioi Anargyroi provides a particularly good example because the surrounding area itself eventually became known by the same name.
Religious Heritage of Agios Theodoros
The chapel forms part of the wider religious heritage of Agios Theodoros.
The principal church of the community is dedicated to Saint Theodoros Tyron, the patron saint from whom the village takes its name, while several smaller chapels and places of worship are scattered throughout the surrounding countryside.
Together, these religious monuments preserve important evidence of the faith, traditions and everyday life of earlier generations of inhabitants.
The smaller country chapels are particularly valuable because they often preserve a close connection between religion, agriculture, local place names and the natural landscape.
A Small Monument of the Cypriot Countryside
Despite its modest dimensions, the Chapel of Agioi Anargyroi represents an important part of the religious and cultural heritage of Agios Theodoros.
Its construction in 1919, traditional stone architecture, wood-carved iconostasis, restoration in 2006, and the local tradition associated with the holy water and icon all contribute to the history of this small rural monument.
Recording and photographing chapels such as Agioi Anargyroi helps preserve valuable knowledge about the religious monuments, traditional architecture, place names and history of the Cypriot countryside for future generations.
