Saint Athanasios Pentaschoinitis
Saint Athanasios Pentaschoinitis is one of the early local saints of Cyprus and is closely associated with the area of Pentashoinos, south of the present-day village of Agios Theodoros in the Larnaca District.
Archaeological excavations in this area revealed an exceptionally important religious complex: the underground tomb identified with Saint Athanasios and the remains of the large church constructed in his honour.
The archaeological excavations were conducted by the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus under the direction of archaeologist George Philotheou. The site lies approximately six kilometres south of Agios Theodoros village.
Coordinates
Latitude: 34.765° N
Longitude: 33.415° E
These coordinates are recorded by the Heritage Gazetteer of Cyprus for Saint Athanasios Pentaschoinitis in the Agios Theodoros area.
The Ancient Village of Pentashoinos
Saint Athanasios originated from the ancient village of Pentashoinos, from which he received the name Pentaschoinitis.
The settlement was situated in the region of the Pentashoinos River, relatively close to the southern coast of Cyprus. The old settlement no longer survives, but its name has been preserved in the river, the surrounding area and, most importantly, in the name of Saint Athanasios Pentaschoinitis.
During the period associated with the saint, the Pentashoinos River formed the eastern boundary of the district of Amathous, giving the area additional historical and geographical importance.
The Life of Saint Athanasios
According to the surviving traditions and historical information concerning his life, Saint Athanasios lived before the Arab raids that began affecting Cyprus during the 7th century.
Archaeological and ecclesiastical accounts place his life approximately between AD 620 and 640. He is believed to have died at a very young age, at around 20 years old.
By the second half of the 7th century, his burial place had already developed into a place of veneration and pilgrimage, and traditions concerning miracles associated with the saint began to develop around his tomb.
The Archaeological Discovery
Excavations revealed the remains of a substantial three-aisled church, together with an underground funerary complex situated within its central section.
The church measured approximately 17 × 11 metres. According to the archaeological interpretation of the excavator, George Philotheou, its construction can probably be placed around the late 8th or early 9th century.
The most important discovery was the underground tomb identified with Saint Athanasios, situated beneath the central aisle of the church.
Its location is particularly remarkable. The monumental character of the tomb and its position at the centre of the later church demonstrate the importance attached to the burial place when the sanctuary was constructed.
The Funerary Complex
The archaeological remains consist of more than a simple individual grave.
Excavation revealed a funerary complex with a central passage. On one side lies the tomb identified with Saint Athanasios, while on the opposite side is another tomb situated at a lower level.
The façade of the saint's tomb was faced with imported marble, an important detail since Cyprus has no natural marble deposits. Following the burial, the tomb was covered with slabs and its edges were sealed with lime mortar.
The care and expense involved in its construction provide further evidence of the religious significance that the burial place had acquired.
The Great Church Above the Tomb
The later church was constructed so that the saint's tomb effectively became the focal point of the pilgrimage complex.
The church has been described as an important example of a transitional domed three-aisled basilica, combining architectural elements of the traditional basilica with those of the domed Byzantine church.
Its massive external walls and architectural arrangement provide important evidence for the development of ecclesiastical architecture in Cyprus during the transition from Late Antiquity to the medieval Byzantine period.
The unusual position of the saint's tomb within the church demonstrates how the building was designed around an already established sacred burial place.
Wall Paintings and Marble Decoration
The church appears once to have been richly decorated with wall paintings.
Centuries of destruction, abandonment and exposure resulted in the loss of most of this decoration, with only limited traces surviving on the lower sections of the walls.
Archaeologists also discovered marble architectural fragments and small marble piers, which are believed to have formed part of the church's marble sanctuary screen.
These discoveries indicate that the building was not simply a small rural chapel. It was an important and elaborately decorated religious monument associated with a locally renowned saint and pilgrimage tradition.
The Second Funerary Complex
Excavations also revealed another interesting funerary feature in the area of the sanctuary.
A square space of uncertain function was discovered together with a large cist grave constructed from gypsum-marble slabs.
Local tradition recorded at Agios Theodoros also associates another grave at the site with the father of Saint Athanasios. This attribution, however, belongs to local tradition and should not be considered a securely established archaeological identification.
An Important Medieval Pilgrimage Centre
Archaeological finds demonstrate that the religious importance of the site continued for centuries after the construction of the church.
A considerable proportion of the pottery recovered during excavations belongs to the medieval period, when the sanctuary of Saint Athanasios appears to have experienced considerable activity.
The reputation of Saint Athanasios also spread beyond Pentashoinos. Representations of the saint survive in several Cypriot churches, demonstrating that his cult was not restricted to his birthplace.
One of the earliest known representations of Saint Athanasios Pentaschoinitis survives at the Monastery of Panagia Amasgou and dates from the beginning of the 12th century.
The Earthquake of 1491
A major event in the history of the monument was the powerful earthquake of 1491, which caused serious damage to the church.
Repairs and alterations were subsequently carried out, although the building apparently never completely recovered its earlier form.
The church continued to be used for some time afterwards, but archaeological evidence suggests that the monument was eventually abandoned, probably during the 16th or 17th century.
Its gradual abandonment ultimately left the once-important pilgrimage centre in ruins until archaeological investigation brought its remains back to light.
The Underground Passages
Another intriguing feature of the monument consists of two openings discovered in the floor of the narthex.
According to information preserved by the Agios Theodoros Community Council, these openings led to underground passages.
Local tradition maintains that the northern passage extended towards the settlement, while the southern passage headed in the direction of the sea.
This information should be regarded as local tradition, since the complete routes and original functions of these passages have not been securely established archaeologically.
Nevertheless, they add another interesting element to the history and traditions surrounding the ancient sanctuary.
The Feast of Saint Athanasios
Over the centuries, the original date on which Saint Athanasios was commemorated appears to have disappeared from local memory.
In modern times, his feast has been established on 10 July.
The rediscovery and archaeological investigation of his tomb and church contributed significantly to renewed interest in a Cypriot saint whose memory had once been closely associated with the Pentashoinos region.
The Importance of the Monument
The archaeological site of Saint Athanasios Pentaschoinitis is an important monument for the Byzantine, archaeological and ecclesiastical history of Cyprus.
The site brings together the burial place associated with a local saint of the 7th century, the remains of a substantial Byzantine church, medieval archaeological material and evidence of a pilgrimage tradition that continued for many centuries.
At the same time, it preserves the memory of the ancient settlement of Pentashoinos, which has disappeared as a village but whose name survives through the river, the surrounding landscape and Saint Athanasios Pentaschoinitis himself.
The recording, photographing and protection of monuments such as this are essential for preserving the archaeological, historical, religious and cultural heritage of Cyprus for future generations.
