Σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία του Plants of the World Online, περιλαμβάνει περίπου 212 γένη και 3.175 είδη.

Acanthus

  1. Acanthus mollis L. · Species

The family Acanthaceae, known as the acanthus family, is a large family of flowering plants belonging to the order Lamiales. According to Plants of the World Online, it includes approximately 212 genera and 3,175 species. It is distributed mainly throughout the tropical and subtropical regions, while only a small proportion of its species occurs in temperate zones.

Most members are herbs or small shrubs, but the family also includes trees, climbing plants, epiphytes and wetland plants. The most important centres of diversity are found in tropical Africa, Madagascar, southern and southeastern Asia, New Guinea and tropical America.

According to the organized checklist of the Cyprus flora, the family Acanthaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon. The single taxon is alien or naturalized. No native non-endemic, endemic, hybrid or uncertain-status taxa of the family are recorded.

General characteristics

The members of Acanthaceae are mainly annual or perennial herbs and shrubs. The stems may be erect, spreading or climbing and frequently possess swollen nodes.

The leaves are generally simple, opposite and decussate, without stipules. Their margins may be entire, toothed, lobed or spiny. In many species, the tissues contain cystoliths, small deposits of calcium carbonate that may be visible as fine lines or spots on the leaf surface.

The flowers are usually bisexual and zygomorphic, although in certain taxa they are nearly actinomorphic. They develop in spikes, racemes, cymes or dense head-like inflorescences. They are frequently accompanied by conspicuous, sometimes brightly coloured or spiny bracts and bracteoles.

The calyx usually consists of four or five lobes. The corolla is fused, tubular and often two-lipped. There are usually two or four stamens attached to the corolla tube.

The ovary is superior, consists of two united carpels and is usually two-chambered. The fruit is generally a two-chambered capsule that opens suddenly or explosively when mature.

In many members of the family, the seeds are supported by characteristic hook-like structures known as retinacula or jaculators. When the capsule opens, these structures help eject the seeds away from the parent plant.

Acanthaceae in Cyprus

The family has no native representative in the organized checklist of Cyprus. It is represented exclusively by Acanthus mollis, a Mediterranean perennial species that has been introduced to the island, probably through cultivation.

Although the species is native to other parts of the Mediterranean, this does not mean that it is native to every Mediterranean country or island. In Cyprus, it is recorded as naturalized non-invasive.

This means that it can survive and reproduce without direct human care in certain locations, but it has not been recorded as a species that spreads aggressively and causes significant impacts on the natural ecosystems of Cyprus.

The taxon of the family Acanthaceae in Cyprus

Alien or naturalized

Acanthus

  1. Acanthus mollis L. · Species

The genus Acanthus

The genus Acanthus includes approximately 20–30 species of perennial herbs and shrubs, naturally distributed from southern and southeastern Europe to Africa, southern Asia, Malaysia and Australia.

The name Acanthus is derived from the ancient Greek word “akanthos”, which is associated with the concept of a thorn. Many members of the genus possess toothed or spiny leaves and bracts.

The species of the genus are usually robust perennial herbs with large leaves and erect flowering inflorescences. The flowers are accompanied by conspicuous bracts, which frequently terminate in sharp teeth.

Description of Acanthus mollis

Acanthus mollis is a robust perennial herb with a thick rhizome and a deep root system. During its growing period, it forms a large basal clump of leaves.

The leaves are large, glossy, dark green, deeply lobed and relatively soft to the touch. The epithet mollis means “soft” and refers to the comparatively soft texture of the leaves, in contrast to the harder and more strongly spiny leaves of other species of the genus.

The flowering stem is erect and may reach or exceed one metre in height. It bears numerous flowers in an elongated spike-like inflorescence.

The flowers have a white or pale corolla surrounded by purple, reddish-brown or greenish bracts. The bracts terminate in sharp points and provide protection to the flowers and developing fruits.

The ovary develops into an elongated, hard capsule. When the capsule matures and dries, it opens suddenly and ejects the relatively large seeds away from the parent plant.

The above-ground parts may dry or become reduced during the hot and dry period. The plant survives through its strong underground rhizome and develops new leaves when suitable moisture and temperature conditions return.

Distribution and status in Cyprus

Acanthus mollis has a native distribution in northwestern Africa and from Sardinia to the eastern Mediterranean. It has been transported and cultivated in many other countries because of its impressive leaves and inflorescences.

In Cyprus, it is an alien and naturalized non-invasive plant. According to the dynamic Flora of Cyprus database, it has been recorded at an elevation of approximately 800 metres, and its flowering period extends from April to August.

Its present occurrences may be associated with old cultivation, gardens, historical sites, abandoned houses or the movement of plant material. The precise origin of each established population needs to be evaluated separately.

Habitats in Cyprus

Acanthus mollis prefers relatively cool, moist soils rich in organic matter. It may grow in:

  • Old and abandoned gardens.
  • Shaded roadsides and path margins.
  • Slopes and the bases of walls.
  • The margins of settlements.
  • Abandoned houses and historical sites.
  • Cool locations near springs or irrigated ground.
  • Semi-shaded sites beneath trees and shrubs.
  • Disturbed soils with relatively high moisture.

The plant can tolerate the summer drought because of its strong underground rhizome. However, it grows best in locations with deep soil, winter moisture and some protection from intense summer sunlight.

Ecology

The large flowers of Acanthus mollis attract mainly large bees and other strong insects capable of entering between the rigid bracts and the corolla.

The distinctive structure of the flower guides the insect towards the nectar and forces it to come into contact with the anthers and stigma. This increases the probability of pollen transfer between different flowers.

Dense clumps of large leaves create shade close to the ground and can retain moisture. At the same time, when the plant forms very dense cover, it may temporarily restrict the growth of smaller herbs immediately beneath its leaves.

In Cyprus, however, it is recorded as non-invasive, and there is no information in the organized checklist characterizing it as a serious threat to natural vegetation.

Reproduction and dispersal

Acanthus mollis reproduces both through seeds and vegetatively through its rhizome and root fragments.

Pollination is carried out mainly by insects. Following fertilization, hard capsules containing a few relatively large seeds are formed.

When the capsules dry, they open suddenly. The internal hook-like structures exert pressure on the seeds and eject them away from the parent plant. Dispersal may continue through gravity, water runoff, animals or the movement of soil.

Vegetative reproduction is particularly effective. Fragments of the rhizome or roots can develop into new plants. For this reason, cutting only the above-ground parts does not always result in the permanent removal of the plant.

The disposal of soil, rhizomes or garden waste may contribute to its establishment in new locations.

Adaptations to the Mediterranean environment

The most important adaptations of Acanthus mollis include:

  • A strong and deep underground rhizome.
  • Storage of water and nutrients in underground organs.
  • Reduction or drying of the above-ground parts during summer drought.
  • Rapid development of new leaves following the first rains.
  • Large leaves that make efficient use of light in semi-shaded sites.
  • Sharp bracts that protect the flowers and fruits.
  • Explosive seed dispersal.
  • The ability to reproduce vegetatively from rhizomes and root fragments.
  • The capacity for long-term survival in abandoned gardens.

Historical and ornamental importance

Acanthus mollis has been cultivated since antiquity as an ornamental plant. Its large, deeply lobed leaves are traditionally associated with the acanthus decorative motif.

This motif became particularly well known through the capitals of the Corinthian order and was used extensively in ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Renaissance and later architecture and decorative art.

Artistic representations of acanthus are usually stylized and do not always constitute precise botanical depictions of a particular species. Nevertheless, Acanthus mollis is frequently mentioned as one of the principal sources of inspiration for this motif.

Today, it is cultivated in gardens for its impressive leaves, tall inflorescences and ability to grow in semi-shaded locations.

Economic and practical importance

The species is used mainly as an ornamental. It is suitable for large gardens, shaded margins and places where it can grow without frequent disturbance.

Because of its strong rhizome, it can be difficult to remove once established in an unwanted location. Its cultivation therefore requires careful selection of the planting site.

Various members of Acanthaceae have been used in traditional healing systems. Traditional uses have also been reported for Acanthus mollis, but these do not constitute evidence of safety or therapeutic effectiveness. No part of the plant should be used medicinally without appropriate scientific and medical guidance.

Monitoring and management in Cyprus

As the only member of the family in Cyprus is alien and naturalized, the main objective is not its protection as a component of the native flora but the monitoring of its behaviour and spread.

Useful measures include:

  • Recording new populations located away from gardens and cultivation.
  • Monitoring possible spread into natural or semi-natural habitats.
  • Avoiding the disposal of rhizomes and soil in the wild.
  • Removing mature fruits where prevention of spread is necessary.
  • Completely removing the rhizome when control of the plant is required.
  • Avoiding indiscriminate herbicide use near native vegetation.
  • Preserving old cultivated plants when they form part of traditional gardens or cultural landscapes, without allowing uncontrolled spread.

Based on present information, Acanthus mollis is classified in Cyprus as naturalized non-invasive. This status may be reassessed in the future if new information concerning its spread or ecological effects becomes available.
