Το Plants of the World Online αναγνωρίζει το Liquidambar ως το μοναδικό γένος της οικογένειας.

Liquidambar
- Liquidambar orientalis Mill. · Species
Σύμφωνα με το Plants of the World Online, εκτείνεται από τα νησιά του ανατολικού Αιγαίου, κυρίως τη Ρόδο, μέχρι τη δυτική και νοτιοδυτική Τουρκία.

The family Altingiaceae is a small family of deciduous flowering trees belonging to the order Saxifragales. In its modern taxonomic circumscription, it includes one living genus, Liquidambar, with approximately 15 recognized species.
The species of the family have a discontinuous natural distribution in eastern and southeastern Asia, the eastern Mediterranean, North America and Central America. Their present distribution represents the remains of a much broader range during the geological past.
The family has a rich fossil record extending from the Cretaceous Period to the Quaternary. For this reason, the surviving Liquidambar species are often considered remnants of ancient forest lineages.
According to the organized checklist of the Cyprus flora, the family Altingiaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon. The single taxon is alien or naturalized. No native non-endemic, endemic, hybrid or uncertain-status taxa of the family are recorded.
Taxonomic note
The plants of Altingiaceae were formerly placed in the family Hamamelidaceae, usually as the subfamily Altingioideae. Modern morphological and molecular studies supported the recognition of Altingiaceae as a separate family.
The genera Altingia and Semiliquidambar were also formerly recognized. In modern taxonomic treatments, their species are generally included within the more broadly circumscribed genus Liquidambar. Plants of the World Online recognizes Liquidambar as the only genus of the family.
General characteristics
The members of Altingiaceae are large, resin-producing, deciduous trees. The trunk is generally straight and the crown broad or pyramidal. The bark of young trees is relatively smooth but becomes thick and deeply longitudinally fissured with age.
The young branches of certain species develop characteristic corky ridges. The tissues of the trunk and branches contain aromatic resinous substances, which are released when the bark is injured.
The leaves are alternate and arranged spirally along the stems. They are long-petiolate, palmate and usually divided into three, five or seven lobes. The margins are finely serrated. When crushed, the leaves may release a characteristic aromatic scent.
The trees are monoecious, meaning that the male and female flowers develop separately on the same individual. The flowers are small, lack conspicuous petals and are pollinated mainly by wind.
The male inflorescences generally develop in erect or elongated groups. The female inflorescences are spherical and hang from long stalks.
Following fertilization, the female inflorescence develops into a characteristic spherical, woody multiple-fruit structure. It consists of numerous united capsules, which open at maturity and release small, frequently winged seeds.
Altingiaceae in Cyprus
The family has no native representative in the organized checklist of the Cyprus flora. It is represented exclusively by Liquidambar orientalis, known in English as Oriental sweetgum or Turkish sweetgum.
The species is a natural component of the flora of southwestern Türkiye and Rhodes but is not considered native to Cyprus. It was probably introduced to the island through cultivation and is recorded as naturalized non-invasive.
According to the dynamic Flora of Cyprus database, the species is naturalized at Tala in the Paphos district, possibly since a long time.

Liquidambar
- Liquidambar orientalis Mill. · Species
The genus Liquidambar
The name Liquidambar is derived from the words “liquid” and “ambar” and refers to the aromatic balsamic resin secreted by the injured bark of certain species.
The members of the genus are large deciduous trees with palmate leaves that superficially resemble maple leaves. However, the two genera are not closely related. Maples belong to the family Sapindaceae, while Liquidambar belongs to Altingiaceae.
The species of the genus are known for the impressive autumn colours of their leaves, which may become yellow, orange, red, purple or reddish-brown before falling.
Description of Liquidambar orientalis
Liquidambar orientalis is a large deciduous tree that, under favourable conditions, can reach a height of approximately 20–30 metres or more. It develops a broad crown and a strong trunk, which may attain a large diameter.
The bark is initially greyish and relatively smooth, but in old trees it becomes greyish-brown or brown and develops deep longitudinal fissures. The inner tissues contain aromatic resin.
The leaves are alternate, long-petiolate and palmate. They usually possess five deep lobes, although their number may range from three to seven. Each primary lobe may bear smaller secondary lobes and a finely serrated margin.
The upper surface of the leaves is usually glossy and green. In autumn, when temperatures and moisture conditions are suitable, the leaves develop yellow, orange, red or purple shades.
The flowers are small and wind-pollinated. The male flowers are arranged in separate inflorescences, while the female flowers form spherical heads borne on long stalks.
The mature fruits form spherical, woody and relatively spiny structures that frequently remain on the tree for a long period. Each spherical structure includes numerous small capsules.
Natural distribution
The natural distribution of Liquidambar orientalis is extremely restricted. According to Plants of the World Online, it extends from the eastern Aegean Islands, principally Rhodes, to western and southwestern Türkiye.
The most important natural populations occur on alluvial plains, in valleys, along riverbanks, near springs and in other habitats with deep, moist soils.
The species forms characteristic forests or stands, particularly in southwestern Türkiye. These populations are considered remnants of more extensive forests that existed in the region during earlier geological periods.
Liquidambar orientalis has been assessed globally as Endangered (EN), mainly because of its highly restricted natural distribution, the loss and fragmentation of its natural forests and changes in land use and hydrology.
The species’ global threat status concerns primarily its natural populations in Türkiye and Rhodes. Its occurrence in Cyprus is alien and naturalized and does not form part of its natural geographical distribution.
Presence in Cyprus
In Cyprus, Liquidambar orientalis is recorded as naturalized non-invasive at Tala in the Paphos district. The report that it may have been naturalized there for a long time suggests a possible association with old cultivation or historical planting.
The long-term survival and possible natural regeneration of an alien tree do not automatically make it native. The known natural distribution, historical evidence, association with cultivation and ability to reproduce without human care are considered when determining its status.
The presence of the species at Tala is of botanical, historical and arboricultural interest. At the same time, its status must remain clearly distinguished from that of the native plants of Cyprus.
Habitats in Cyprus
Liquidambar orientalis requires more water than most typical drought-adapted trees of Cyprus. It prefers:
- Deep and fertile soils.
- Sites with increased soil moisture.
- Valleys and natural depressions.
- The margins of springs, streams and irrigation channels.
- Old irrigated gardens and orchards.
- Cool locations near settlements.
- Sunny or partially shaded sites.
- Areas where the root system has access to water during summer.
Young trees are more sensitive to water shortage. Older individuals may develop a deeper root system, but prolonged summer drought can restrict growth and seed production.
Ecology
Liquidambar orientalis is wind-pollinated. Its small flowers lack large or brightly coloured petals because they do not depend mainly on insects for pollen transfer.
A mature tree provides shade and creates a cooler microclimate beneath its crown. Fallen leaves add organic matter to the soil and provide shelter for small organisms.
Cavities, bark fissures and the dense crown of old trees may be used by birds, insects, spiders and other organisms. The winged seeds may also provide a food source for small animals.
Within its natural range, the species is an important component of moist riparian and alluvial forests. In Cyprus, however, its ecological function is restricted to the locations where it has been introduced and naturalized.
Reproduction and dispersal
Reproduction takes place mainly through seeds. Pollen is transported by wind from the male to the female inflorescences.
Following fertilization, the characteristic spherical fruits are formed. When the individual capsules mature and open, they release small winged seeds.
The seeds are dispersed mainly by wind. Gravity, surface water flow and streams may also contribute to their movement.
Successful natural regeneration requires suitable moisture, bare or lightly covered soil and limited competition from dense vegetation. In the dry climate of Cyprus, the establishment of young plants is more likely near water sources or in irrigated sites.
The species can also be propagated by humans through seeds, cuttings or other arboricultural methods.
Adaptations
The most important adaptations of the species include:
- A deciduous habit that reduces water loss during the unfavourable period.
- A strong and extensive root system.
- The ability to grow in deep alluvial soils.
- Wind pollination.
- The production of numerous small winged seeds.
- Seed dispersal by wind and water.
- The ability to produce new shoots following certain injuries.
- The production of resin that helps protect injured tissues.
- Seasonal leaf fall and a period of winter dormancy.
Although it can tolerate a degree of summer drought once established, it is not a truly xerophytic tree and requires access to adequate soil moisture for good growth.
Economic and cultural importance
Liquidambar orientalis produces an aromatic balsamic resin known as storax, styrax or Oriental storax. The resin is extracted following controlled injury to the bark.
This substance has historically been used in perfumery, incense production, cosmetics and traditional medicinal preparations. Its collection continues to have local economic and cultural importance in parts of southwestern Türkiye.
Historical use does not constitute evidence of safety or therapeutic effectiveness. The resin and other products of the tree may cause allergic or other adverse reactions and should not be used medicinally without appropriate guidance.
The wood may be used in woodworking, while the tree is cultivated as an ornamental for the form of its crown, palmate leaves and impressive autumn colouration.
Conservation and management in Cyprus
The fact that Liquidambar orientalis is globally Endangered does not alter its status as an alien and naturalized plant in Cyprus. However, old trees at Tala may possess historical, cultural, aesthetic or genetic value and should be recorded and studied.
Useful measures include:
- Accurately mapping the trees and young plants.
- Recording their age, condition and possible historical origin.
- Protecting old trees from unjustified felling or destruction.
- Maintaining necessary soil moisture without excessive irrigation.
- Avoiding excavation and soil compaction near the roots.
- Monitoring natural regeneration.
- Monitoring possible spread into natural habitats.
- Avoiding the classification of the Cypriot trees as native without documented evidence.
- Maintaining their recorded status as naturalized non-invasive unless newer evidence justifies a change.
Threats to the natural populations
Within the species’ natural range, the main threats include:
- The clearance of natural forests.
- Conversion of moist plains into agricultural land.
- Building and tourism development.
- Dam construction and other hydrological changes.
- Excessive or incorrect harvesting of resin.
- Population fragmentation.
- Fires.
- Pollution and degradation of water resources.
- Climate change and increasing drought.
These threats concern mainly the natural populations of Türkiye and Rhodes and should not be presented as an assessment of the alien occurrence in Cyprus.
