Αντίθετα, το σημερινό Plants of the World Online των Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, δέχεται την ονομασία Viburnaceae και αντιμετωπίζει το Adoxaceae ως συνώνυμό της.

Viburnum tinus subsp. tinus
Sambucus ebulus
Το Flora of Cyprus το χαρακτηρίζει εγκλιματισμένο μη επεκτατικό – Naturalized non-invasive.
Sambucus nigra

The Adoxaceae family
Adoxaceae is a family of flowering plants in the order Dipsacales. It includes perennial herbs, shrubs and small trees, with its principal diversity occurring in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Depending on the taxonomic system followed, the family includes genera such as Adoxa, Sambucus and Viburnum.
The taxonomic limits of the family have changed several times. In earlier classifications, Sambucus and Viburnum were frequently placed in Caprifoliaceae or recognized as separate families. The Cyprus checklist used here follows the name Adoxaceae. In contrast, the current Plants of the World Online, maintained by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts Viburnaceae and treats Adoxaceae as its synonym.
This difference does not refer to different plants. It reflects alternative taxonomic treatments concerning the name and delimitation of the same evolutionary lineage.
Principal morphological characteristics
Members of the family show considerable variation in growth form. They may be low rhizomatous herbs, perennial plants, shrubs or small trees.
The leaves are usually opposite. In Viburnum they are generally simple, whereas in Sambucus they are normally pinnately compound and consist of several leaflets. Their margins may be entire, toothed or serrated.
The inflorescences usually contain numerous small flowers and may form flat-topped or rounded panicles, corymbs or compound cymose clusters. The flowers are generally actinomorphic, bisexual and five-parted, with a small calyx, fused petals and stamens alternating with the corolla lobes.
The ovary is inferior or partly inferior. The fruits are fleshy. In Viburnum they are botanically classified as drupes, while those of Sambucus resemble berries and contain hard pyrenes.
Distribution and habitats
The family has a predominantly temperate distribution and is particularly diverse in the Northern Hemisphere. Some species extend into subtropical regions or tropical mountain habitats.
Its members occur in forests, woodland margins, shrublands, stream valleys, moist ground, mountain habitats and Mediterranean vegetation. Many species prefer relatively cool and moist conditions, although some, including Viburnum tinus, are well adapted to the Mediterranean climate.
Ecological importance
The numerous small flowers attract bees, flies and other pollinating insects. The fleshy fruits are consumed by birds and other animals, which contribute to seed dispersal.
Dense shrubs also provide shelter, resting places and nesting habitat for small birds and other animals. Members of the family can therefore play an important ecological role even where they are not dominant components of the vegetation.
Adoxaceae in Cyprus
In the organized checklist of the vascular plants of Cyprus, Adoxaceae is represented by two genera and three taxa:
- Genus Viburnum: one taxon
- Genus Sambucus: two taxa
- Total number of genera: 2
- Total number of taxa: 3
- Native non-endemic taxa: 1
- Endemic taxa: 0
- Alien or naturalized taxa: 2
- Hybrids: 0
- Taxa of uncertain status: 0
The three taxa included in the Cyprus checklist are:
- Viburnum tinus L. subsp. tinus
- Sambucus ebulus L.
- Sambucus nigra L.
Viburnum tinus subsp. tinus
Viburnum tinus subsp. tinus is the only native member of the family included in the Cyprus checklist. It is not endemic to Cyprus, as the species has a wider Mediterranean distribution. It occurs naturally in countries and islands of southern Europe, northern Africa and the eastern Mediterranean.
It is a densely branched evergreen shrub or small tree. Its leaves are opposite, simple and leathery, usually ovate to elliptical, with a dark-green upper surface. The numerous small flowers are white or slightly pinkish and are grouped in dense inflorescences. Its fruits mature to a dark blue or metallic blue-black colour.
According to Flora of Cyprus, it is an indigenous, non-endemic taxon. It flowers mainly from March to April and is listed in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus as Vulnerable under criteria D1 and D2. This assessment is associated with its small population and restricted distribution on the island.
Protection of its natural localities, avoidance of cutting or damaging individual shrubs and continued monitoring of the known populations are important for its conservation in Cyprus.
Sambucus ebulus
Sambucus ebulus, commonly known in English as dwarf elder or danewort, is a perennial herbaceous and rhizomatous plant. Unlike the woody black elder, its above-ground shoots normally die back at the end of the growing season and emerge again from its underground parts.
It has erect stems, opposite pinnate leaves and numerous small white or pinkish flowers arranged in flat-topped inflorescences. Its ripe fruits are black and glossy. Through its rhizomes, the plant can form dense colonies.
Its native distribution extends from north-western Africa and Europe to western and central Asia. It is introduced in Cyprus. Flora of Cyprus classifies it as naturalized non-invasive. Flowering is recorded mainly from June to August.
Sambucus nigra
Sambucus nigra, commonly known as elder or black elder, is a deciduous shrub or small tree. It has opposite pinnate leaves and large, relatively flat inflorescences consisting of numerous small white flowers. Its ripe fruits are normally black to dark purple.
The species is widely distributed across much of Europe and western Asia and is cultivated in many regions as an ornamental or traditionally useful plant.
It is not considered native to Cyprus. According to Flora of Cyprus, it is recorded as casual. This means that it may occur outside cultivation, but there is insufficient evidence that it maintains stable, self-sustaining naturalized populations. Its flowering period in Cyprus is reported from April to July.
Uses and caution
Many species of Viburnum and Sambucus are cultivated as ornamental plants for their foliage, inflorescences and fruits. Different parts of certain Sambucus species also have a long history of traditional use.
Traditional use, however, does not mean that every part of these plants is suitable for consumption. Unripe fruits, leaves, stems and other parts of some species may contain undesirable or toxic substances. They should not be collected or used as food or medicine without reliable identification and appropriate specialist knowledge.
Threats and conservation in Cyprus
The principal conservation concern within the family in Cyprus is the native Viburnum tinus subsp. tinus. Because of its small population and restricted geographical distribution, it may be affected by:
- Destruction or alteration of natural habitats
- Land clearance and development
- Wildfires
- Prolonged drought
- Climate change
- Accidental cutting or destruction of individual plants
- Small and isolated populations
Protection of the known localities, avoidance of damaging activities and systematic monitoring are necessary for its long-term conservation.
