607. Cytinus hypocistis (L.) L. · Species
Cytinus hypocistis (L.) L.
Το Plants of the World Online αναγνωρίζει περισσότερα υποείδη μέσα στο Cytinus hypocistis και καταγράφει την Κύπρο στη φυσική εξάπλωση του Cytinus hypocistis subsp. orientalis Wettst. ex Hayek.

Text by George Konstantinou
The Cytinaceae is a small family of parasitic flowering plants belonging to the order Malvales. It includes two accepted genera, Bdallophytum and Cytinus, distributed mainly in the Mediterranean, Africa, Madagascar and parts of Central America.
Members of the family are holoparasitic plants. They lack chlorophyll and cannot carry out photosynthesis. They depend entirely on their host plants for water, mineral nutrients and organic compounds.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Cytinaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon:
- 1 native non-endemic species,
- no endemic taxa,
- no alien taxa,
- no hybrids,
- no taxa of uncertain status.
The only genus of the family included in the checklist is Cytinus.
The parasitic life form
Most of the plant remains hidden below the soil surface, developing within or around the roots of its host plant.
The parasite connects to the roots through specialized structures known as haustoria. Through these structures, it absorbs water and nutrients from the host’s vascular tissues.
Because it does not photosynthesize, it does not produce normal green leaves. Its leaves are reduced to fleshy or scale-like bracts surrounding the short flowering shoots.
The above-ground part becomes visible mainly during the flowering period. The inflorescences emerge at the soil surface, generally very close to the base of the host plant.
Principal morphological characteristics
Species of Cytinus lack conspicuous green stems and normal leaves. Their visible parts consist of short, fleshy inflorescences that frequently emerge in clusters.
The flowers are small and unisexual and are surrounded by fleshy, coloured bracts. Male and female flowers may occur in the same inflorescence, with the female flowers generally positioned below the male ones.
The perianth is tubular or bell-shaped and consists of fleshy segments. The flowers and bracts may vary in colour from yellowish and cream to orange or reddish.
The fruit is a fleshy berry containing numerous very small seeds. The seeds must reach the vicinity of a suitable host root for a new plant to become established.
Host plants
Cytinus hypocistis parasitizes mainly the roots of shrubs belonging to the Cistaceae, particularly species of Cistus.
Rockroses are characteristic plants of Mediterranean scrub and maquis vegetation. The presence of suitable hosts is essential for the establishment and survival of the parasite.
Cytinus hypocistis is not independent of its host. Even when its inflorescences emerge some distance from the visible trunk of the shrub, their underground parts remain connected to its root system.
Distribution and habitats
Cytinus hypocistis is a Mediterranean species. Its native distribution includes countries of southern Europe, northern Africa and the eastern Mediterranean.
In Cyprus, it occurs from sea level to approximately 1,375 metres. It grows wherever suitable host plants are present, particularly in:
- phrygana vegetation,
- Mediterranean maquis,
- scrub containing Cistus species,
- open pine woodland,
- rocky slopes,
- woodland margins,
- dry and sunny Mediterranean sites.
Although the surrounding habitat may be dry, the parasite obtains water and nutrients directly from the roots of its host.
The native non-endemic species
607. Cytinus hypocistis (L.) L. · Species
Cytinus hypocistis is a native non-endemic, holoparasitic flowering plant. It is commonly known in English as yellow cytinus.
It remains hidden below ground for most of the year. It becomes noticeable mainly in spring, when its fleshy inflorescences emerge around the bases of its host plants.
The inflorescences are short, dense and frequently grouped together. The outer bracts are fleshy and may be yellow, cream, orange or reddish. The small flowers develop within the cluster of bracts.
The flowers produce nectar and attract insects that assist in pollen transfer. The position of the inflorescences close to the soil surface makes them accessible to small insects moving through the low vegetation and leaf litter.
After fertilization, fleshy fruits containing numerous microscopic seeds are formed. The successful establishment of a new plant depends on the seeds being transported close to the roots of a suitable host.
Flora of Cyprus records it as an indigenous, non-endemic geophyte, flowering from February to May.
Taxonomic note
The organized checklist of the Cypriot flora records the Cypriot plant at species level as:
Cytinus hypocistis (L.) L.
Plants of the World Online recognizes several subspecies within Cytinus hypocistis and includes Cyprus within the native distribution of Cytinus hypocistis subsp. orientalis Wettst. ex Hayek.
This article follows strictly the taxonomic rank used in the organized Cypriot checklist. It therefore presents one species and does not add a separate subspecies to the number of Cypriot taxa.
Identification
Cytinus hypocistis can be recognized by the following combination of characteristics:
- the complete absence of green leaves,
- its short, fleshy inflorescences,
- yellowish, orange or reddish bracts,
- inflorescences emerging directly from the soil,
- their occurrence near the bases of Cistus species,
- small unisexual flowers,
- fleshy fruits containing numerous small seeds.
The presence of a suitable host plant is a particularly useful feature when identifying and searching for the species in its natural habitat.
Ecological importance
Although it is a holoparasite, Cytinus hypocistis is a natural and specialized component of Mediterranean ecosystems.
Its flowers provide nectar for insects during spring. Its fruits are eaten by small animals, which may contribute to seed dispersal.
Its ecological presence depends on the maintenance of healthy populations of its host plants and the natural scrub habitats in which they grow.
Threats and protection
The main potential threats to the species are associated with the destruction of its host plants and their habitats.
These include:
- clearance of natural scrub,
- urban and tourism development,
- road construction,
- frequent or severe fires,
- removal of rockroses from natural sites,
- use of herbicides,
- collection of flowering inflorescences,
- degradation of maquis and phrygana vegetation.
Because the underground parasite depends completely on its host, the destruction of an infected shrub may simultaneously result in the loss of the parasitic plant.
Its protection requires the conservation of natural scrub and the avoidance of uprooting host plants. Inflorescences should not be collected from the wild.
