Το Plants of the World Online, σύμφωνα με το ταξινομικό σύστημα που χρησιμοποιεί σήμερα, το εντάσσει στην ευρύτερα οριοθετημένη οικογένεια Aspleniaceae.

606. Cystopteris fragilis (L.) Bernh. · Species

Text by George Konstantinou

The Cystopteridaceae is a family of ferns belonging to the order Polypodiales. Its members are perennial, seedless vascular plants that do not produce flowers, fruits or seeds but reproduce by spores.

They are mainly small or medium-sized ferns growing in shaded and relatively moist places, including rock crevices, shaded slopes, the bases of cliffs and moist mountain habitats.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Cystopteridaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon:

  • 1 native non-endemic species,
  • no endemic taxa,
  • no alien taxa,
  • no hybrids,
  • no taxa of uncertain status.

The only genus of the family included in the checklist is Cystopteris.

Taxonomic note

The taxonomic placement of Cystopteris differs among modern classification systems.

The organized checklist of the Cypriot flora and Flora of Cyprus place it in the family Cystopteridaceae. Plants of the World Online, according to the taxonomic system it currently follows, includes it within a more broadly defined Aspleniaceae.

This article follows the classification adopted by the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora. The species is therefore presented under Cystopteridaceae.

Principal morphological characteristics

Members of the family are perennial ferns with short or creeping underground rhizomes. Clusters of leaves, generally known as fronds, arise from the rhizome.

Each frond consists of a stalk and a delicate, usually pinnately divided blade. The blade may be divided once or several times, producing numerous small segments.

Young fronds emerge tightly coiled and gradually unfold as they develop. This is a characteristic growth pattern of many ferns.

Groups of sporangia, known as sori, develop on the lower surface of mature fronds. Spores are produced inside the sporangia. The sori are initially protected by a small, delicate covering known as an indusium.

In Cystopteris, the indusium is generally thin and fragile. As the sporangia mature, it shrivels or moves aside, allowing the spores to be released.

Reproduction and life cycle

Cystopteris fragilis does not produce flowers or seeds. Its spores are transported mainly by wind and may germinate when they reach a suitable moist surface.

The spore develops into a small, green and generally heart-shaped gametophyte known as a prothallus. The male and female reproductive organs are formed on this structure.

Water is required for fertilization because the male reproductive cells must move through a thin film of water to reach the egg. Following fertilization, a new sporophyte develops—the fern visible in the natural environment.

Distribution and habitats

Members of the family occur mainly in temperate and mountainous regions of the world. They prefer cool, shaded and relatively moist microhabitats.

Cystopteris fragilis has an exceptionally wide global distribution. It occurs throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere and extends into parts of Africa, tropical America and southeastern Australia.

In Cyprus, it is mainly a plant of cool mountain sites. Its occurrence is associated with shaded rock crevices, moist cliffs, rocky slopes, walls and other sheltered places where sufficient moisture is retained.

The native non-endemic species

606. Cystopteris fragilis (L.) Bernh. · Species

Cystopteris fragilis is a native non-endemic species of Cyprus. It is commonly known as brittle bladder-fern or fragile fern.

It is a small to medium-sized perennial fern with a short rhizome. Its fronds form loose or denser clusters and generally emerge during the wet season.

The stalk is slender and flexible and is often shorter than the blade. The blade is elongated to lance-shaped, delicate and fragile, usually divided two or three times. Its smaller segments have toothed or deeply lobed margins.

The sori develop on the lower surface of the fronds. They are generally rounded and initially covered by a delicate indusium. When the sporangia mature, they turn brown and release numerous microscopic spores.

The species may display considerable morphological variation. The size and degree of division of its fronds are influenced by moisture, shade, substrate, elevation and general growing conditions.

Flora of Cyprus records it as an indigenous, non-endemic geophyte. Cypriot records are known from the Troodos mountain range, where suitable cool and moist microhabitats occur.

Identification

Identification of Cystopteris fragilis involves examining:

  • the overall shape of the frond,
  • the length and colour of the stalk,
  • the degree of division of the blade,
  • the shape of the pinnae and smaller segments,
  • the form of their margins,
  • the position and arrangement of the sori,
  • the shape and texture of the indusium,
  • the presence of scales on the rhizome and at the base of the stalk.

Young or sterile fronds may be difficult to identify reliably. Mature, spore-bearing fronds are preferable for accurate identification.

Ecological importance

Cystopteris fragilis forms part of the specialized flora of shaded rocks and moist mountain microhabitats.

Its stands provide cover for small invertebrates and help retain moisture within rock crevices. Dead fronds contribute small quantities of organic matter to places where soil formation is limited.

Its presence may indicate local conditions with sufficient shade, coolness and moisture.

Threats and protection

Cypriot populations may be affected by any intervention that alters the cool and moist microhabitats in which the species grows.

Potential local threats include:

  • destruction or clearance of rocky slopes,
  • widening of roads and paths,
  • alterations to springs and wet rocks,
  • loss of shade following vegetation clearance,
  • forest fires,
  • prolonged drought,
  • collection of plants from small populations.

Its protection depends mainly on conserving shaded rocky sites and their local moisture conditions. Plants should not be removed from their natural habitats.
