1575. Carex cyprica A. Mol. & al. · Species

1576. Carex troodi Turrill · Species

1577. Cyperus cyprius Post · Species

1781. Cyperus alternifolius subsp. flabelliformis Kük. · Subspecies

Text by George Konstantinou

The Cyperaceae, commonly known as the sedge family, is a large family of monocotyledonous flowering plants belonging to the order Poales. It comprises mainly herbaceous plants of wet and aquatic habitats, generally known as sedges.

Many members of the family superficially resemble grasses of the Poaceae, but they differ in the morphology of their stems, leaves, flowers and fruits. Their stems are often solid and triangular in cross-section, while their leaves are usually arranged in three ranks.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Cyperaceae is represented in Cyprus by 11 genera and 34 taxa:

  • 30 native non-endemic taxa,
  • 3 endemic species of Cyprus,
  • 1 alien or naturalized taxon,
  • no hybrids,
  • no taxa of uncertain status.

The genera included in the checklist are Bolboschoenus, Carex, Cladium, Cyperus, Eleocharis, Fimbristylis, Fuirena, Isolepis, Schoenoplectus, Schoenus and Scirpoides.

Principal morphological characteristics

Most species of the family are annual or perennial herbs. Many perennial species possess underground rhizomes, stolons, tubers or swollen bases that allow them to survive adverse periods and spread vegetatively.

The stems are generally upright, solid and triangular, although in some genera they may be cylindrical, flattened or hollow. Their nodes are not usually as conspicuous as those of grasses.

The leaves are narrow and linear, with parallel venation and a closed or nearly closed basal sheath. They frequently arise from the base of the plant and are arranged in three ranks around the stem.

The flowers are very small, wind-pollinated and lack conspicuous petals. They are usually grouped into spikelets, which form spikes, heads, umbel-like clusters or complex branched inflorescences. The perianth may be absent or represented by small bristles or scales.

The fruit is a small, dry, one-seeded achene. In Carex, the fruit is enclosed within a specialized sac-like structure known as a utricle or perigynium, which is an important feature in species identification.

Differences from grasses

Cyperaceae are frequently confused with grasses of the Poaceae. A useful, although not absolute, morphological distinction is that:

  • Cyperaceae stems are frequently solid and triangular,
  • their leaves are usually arranged in three ranks,
  • their leaf sheaths are often closed,
  • the stems of most grasses are cylindrical and usually hollow between the nodes,
  • grass leaves are generally arranged in two ranks.

Reliable identification requires the examination of spikelets, glumes, flowers and fruits and, particularly in Carex, the utricles.

Distribution and habitats

The Cyperaceae has a worldwide distribution. Its greatest diversity is generally associated with wet soils and areas close to fresh or brackish water.

In Cyprus, members of the family occur along:

  • rivers, streams and seasonal watercourses,
  • springs, wet meadows and marshes,
  • the margins of reservoirs and lakes,
  • irrigation channels and ditches,
  • sandy and muddy shores,
  • salt marshes and brackish wetlands,
  • seasonally flooded depressions,
  • wet mountain meadows and woodland openings,
  • cultivated and disturbed wet ground.

Some species are strictly associated with permanently wet areas, while others can survive in sites that dry out during summer.

Endemic species of Cyprus

The Cyperaceae includes three endemic species in the checklist whose entire natural global distribution is restricted to Cyprus.

1575. Carex cyprica A. Mol. & al. · Species

Carex cyprica is endemic to Cyprus. It belongs to a taxonomically difficult group of Carex, and reliable identification requires the examination of mature inflorescences and fruits.

Flora of Cyprus notes that the taxonomy of this group in Cyprus has not yet been fully resolved. Earlier Cypriot records published under different names have been associated with or reassessed in relation to Carex cyprica.

1576. Carex troodi Turrill · Species

Carex troodi is endemic to Cyprus, and its name refers to the Troodos mountain range. It is a perennial herb of wet mountain habitats.

As in other species of Carex, its identification is based on the morphology of the inflorescences, male and female spikes, glumes and utricles.

1577. Cyperus cyprius Post · Species

Cyperus cyprius is endemic to Cyprus and is a perennial geophyte. Flora of Cyprus classifies it as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2.

Its restricted distribution and the small number of suitable wet habitats make it vulnerable to local changes. Drainage, water abstraction, alterations to springs and streams and the degradation of wet mountain sites may affect its populations.

Alien or naturalized taxon

1781. Cyperus alternifolius subsp. flabelliformis Kük. · Subspecies

Cyperus alternifolius subsp. flabelliformis is an alien taxon of the Cypriot flora. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant in gardens and around artificial ponds, reservoirs and other wet installations.

It may escape from cultivation and appear in irrigation channels, ditches, along banks and in other permanently or seasonally wet sites.

Identification of the principal genera

The genus Carex is characterized by specialized unisexual flowers and by the sac-like structure surrounding the fruit. The detailed morphology of its spikes and utricles is essential for species identification.

Species of Cyperus often possess umbel-like inflorescences with several leaf-like bracts at their bases. Many are plants of wet or disturbed soils.

Bolboschoenus, Schoenoplectus and Scirpoides are generally robust rhizomatous perennials occurring along banks, in marshes and in other wet habitats.

Species of Eleocharis usually possess reduced leaves and a single terminal spikelet at the top of each stem.

Cladium mariscus is a robust perennial of marshes and wetlands, with long, narrow leaves bearing rough, sharp margins.

Ecological importance

Cyperaceae are fundamental components of many wetland ecosystems. Their dense stands provide shelter, breeding sites and food for insects, spiders, amphibians, reptiles, birds and small mammals.

Their rhizomes and roots bind soil and sediment, reducing erosion along banks. The vegetation also slows water movement and traps suspended particles.

Many species contribute to nutrient retention, organic-carbon storage and the creation of microhabitats within wetlands.

Their fruits and seeds provide food for aquatic and wading birds, while their stems and leaves are used by various animals for cover or nest construction.

Threats and protection

The main threats to members of the family in Cyprus are associated with the loss and degradation of wetlands. These include:

  • drainage of marshes and seasonal wetlands,
  • excessive abstraction of groundwater and surface water,
  • diversion or channelization of streams,
  • clearance of natural riparian vegetation,
  • pollution and eutrophication,
  • coastal and urban development,
  • destruction of small springs and wet mountain sites,
  • spread of competitive alien plants.

Their protection requires the maintenance of natural hydrological conditions, the avoidance of destructive interventions along banks and springs and the systematic monitoring of rare and endemic populations.
