609. Pteridium aquilinum subsp. pinetorum (C. N. Page & R. R. Mill) J. A. Thomson · Subspecies

Pteridium aquilinum subsp. pinetorum (C. N. Page & R. R. Mill) J. A. Thomson.

Το Plants of the World Online αντιμετωπίζει σήμερα το ίδιο όνομα ως συνώνυμο και αναγνωρίζει το taxon σε βαθμίδα είδους ως:

Pteridium pinetorum C. N. Page & R. R. Mill.

The Dennstaedtiaceae is a family of ferns belonging to the order Polypodiales. It includes mainly medium-sized or large perennial ferns with long, creeping rhizomes and strongly divided fronds.

The family has an almost worldwide distribution but is most diverse in tropical regions. Unlike many other fern families, several Dennstaedtiaceae can grow in open, well-lit or disturbed habitats.

Its members are seedless vascular plants. They do not form flowers, fruits or seeds but reproduce by spores produced in sporangia on the lower surface of their fronds.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Dennstaedtiaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon:

  • 1 native non-endemic subspecies,
  • no endemic taxa,
  • no alien taxa,
  • no hybrids,
  • no taxa of uncertain status.

The only genus of the family included in the checklist is Pteridium.

Principal morphological characteristics

Most members of the family are terrestrial perennial ferns. They possess long, branching underground rhizomes that can spread horizontally through the soil.

Individual fronds emerge from the rhizomes at separate points. In this way, a single plant may cover a large area and form extensive colonies.

Young fronds emerge tightly coiled and gradually unfold as they develop. Mature fronds are generally large, with a long stalk and a broad, triangular blade.

The blade is divided pinnately two or more times. The smaller segments are elongated and may have entire, lobed or slightly toothed margins.

The sori, which are groups of sporangia, develop near the margins on the underside of the fronds. In Pteridium, they are protected by the recurved margin of the blade and by a delicate inner indusium.

Underground growth and spread

The extensive rhizome system is one of the most important characteristics of Pteridium. Its rhizomes store nutrients and allow the plant to survive when the above-ground fronds dry out or are destroyed.

New fronds can emerge from different points of the same underground system. A seemingly large stand may therefore consist of shoots connected beneath the soil.

Vegetative spread through rhizomes can be very effective. At the same time, the microscopic spores are transported by wind and allow the plant to become established in new sites.

Reproduction and life cycle

Mature fronds produce numerous spores inside the sporangia. When the sporangia mature, they open and release the spores into the air.

When a spore reaches a suitable moist substrate, it may germinate and produce a small gametophyte known as a prothallus. The male and female reproductive organs develop on this structure.

Water is required for fertilization. After fertilization, a new sporophyte develops and produces the rhizome and large fronds of the mature fern.

Distribution and habitats

The Dennstaedtiaceae occurs in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. Species of Pteridium have a very broad distribution and are generally known as bracken ferns.

In Cyprus, Pteridium aquilinum subsp. pinetorum is a rare plant of mountain habitats. Flora of Cyprus records it from an elevation of approximately 1,800 metres, associating it with the highest zone of the Troodos mountain range.

Suitable microhabitats may include:

  • openings in mountain forests,
  • woodland margins,
  • shaded or partly shaded slopes,
  • sites with deeper and relatively moist soil,
  • margins of paths and forest roads,
  • disturbed sites within mountain forests.

The maintenance of sufficient soil moisture during the growing period is important for the emergence and persistence of the fronds.

The native non-endemic subspecies

609. Pteridium aquilinum subsp. pinetorum (C. N. Page & R. R. Mill) J. A. Thomson · Subspecies

Pteridium aquilinum subsp. pinetorum is a native non-endemic subspecies of Cyprus. It belongs to the group of ferns commonly known as bracken.

It is a perennial rhizomatous fern. Its fronds arise separately from the underground rhizome and can reach a considerable height.

The stalk is long, strong and generally upright. The blade is large and broadly triangular in outline. It is repeatedly divided into pinnae, pinnules and smaller segments.

The upper surface of the fronds is green, while the underside bears the reproductive sori close to the margins. The margins curve downwards and protect the sporangia.

The above-ground fronds are seasonal and may dry during the cold or dry period. The underground rhizome remains alive and produces new fronds when conditions become suitable again.

Flora of Cyprus records the taxon as an indigenous, non-endemic geophyte.

Taxonomic note

The organized checklist of the Cypriot flora and Flora of Cyprus record the Cypriot taxon as:

Pteridium aquilinum subsp. pinetorum (C. N. Page & R. R. Mill) J. A. Thomson.

Plants of the World Online currently treats that name as a synonym and accepts the taxon at species rank as:

Pteridium pinetorum C. N. Page & R. R. Mill.

This article strictly follows the taxonomic rank and name used in the organized Cypriot checklist. The Cypriot plant is therefore presented as a subspecies, not as a separate species.

Identification

Identification of Pteridium aquilinum subsp. pinetorum involves examining:

  • the size and triangular outline of the frond,
  • the length and form of the stalk,
  • the degree of division of the blade,
  • the form of the pinnae and pinnules,
  • hairs or other details on the lower surface,
  • the position of the sori along the margins,
  • the recurved margin of the blade,
  • characteristics of the spores,
  • the mountain habitat and elevation.

Distinguishing between the different taxa within the Pteridium aquilinum complex can be difficult. Mature, spore-bearing fronds and careful examination of morphological features are required for reliable identification.

Ecological importance

Ferns of the genus Pteridium provide cover and microhabitats for insects, spiders, reptiles and other small animals.

Their extensive root and rhizome systems bind the soil and may reduce erosion on slopes. Dry fronds contribute organic matter to the soil as they decompose.

Where Pteridium becomes very dense, it may shade smaller plants and limit the natural regeneration of other species. In Cyprus, however, this particular taxon has a restricted mountain occurrence and should not be regarded as a widely distributed species.

Toxicity and precautions

Plants of the genus Pteridium contain natural chemical compounds that can be toxic to animals and humans when consumed.

They should not be used as food, and tasting young shoots or other plant parts is not recommended. Plants should not be collected from the small Cypriot populations.

Dry fronds can increase the quantity of flammable plant material close to the ground. However, the underground rhizome may survive a surface fire and produce new fronds.

Threats and protection

Because of its restricted mountain occurrence in Cyprus, any serious alteration of its known habitats may affect the taxon.

Potential threats include:

  • forestry and road works,
  • widening of roads or paths,
  • clearance of understorey vegetation,
  • uprooting of rhizomes,
  • frequent or severe fires,
  • prolonged drought,
  • reduction in soil moisture,
  • collection of plants,
  • heavy trampling at small sites.

Its protection requires conservation of its mountain microhabitats, avoidance of excavation at known sites and monitoring of the condition and extent of its populations.
