Το Plants of the World Online
610. Dioscorea communis (L.) Caddick & Wilkin · Species
Tamus communis L.
Dioscorea communis (L.) Caddick & Wilkin.
Η Flora of Cyprus αναφέρει το Tamus communis ως συνώνυμο.

Text by George Konstantinou
The Dioscoreaceae, commonly known as the yam family, is a family of monocotyledonous flowering plants belonging to the order Dioscoreales.
It comprises mainly perennial climbing herbs that grow from underground tubers or rhizomes. Some tropical species of Dioscorea are cultivated for their edible tubers and are known as yams. This does not mean that all members of the family are edible.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Dioscoreaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon:
- 1 native non-endemic species,
- no endemic taxa,
- no alien taxa,
- no hybrids,
- no taxa of uncertain status.
The only genus of the family included in the checklist is Dioscorea.
Principal morphological characteristics
Members of the family are mainly perennial geophytes. They possess underground tubers or rhizomes in which water and nutrients are stored.
The underground section generally produces slender, long and twining stems. The stems cannot support themselves and climb over shrubs, trees and other vegetation.
The leaves are simple or compound and may be alternate or opposite. In many species of Dioscorea, they are broad, ovate or heart-shaped, with several strong veins arising near the base.
The flowers are generally small and greenish, yellowish or whitish. They may be bisexual or unisexual. In dioecious species, male and female flowers develop on separate plants.
The ovary is generally inferior and consists of three chambers. Depending on the genus and species, the fruit may be a dry capsule, a winged fruit or a fleshy berry.
Climbing growth
Dioscorea communis does not possess tendrils like grapevines and many other climbing plants. It climbs by twining its entire slender stem around branches and other supports.
New stems emerge from the underground tuber during the active growing season. As they lengthen, they seek support and can pass through dense shrubs or climb into small trees.
This climbing form allows the plant to reach better-lit positions without investing in the development of a strong, self-supporting trunk.
Distribution and habitats
The Dioscoreaceae has a mainly tropical and subtropical distribution, although some species extend into temperate regions.
Dioscorea communis has a native distribution extending from the Azores and western Europe to the Mediterranean and northern Iran. Plants of the World Online includes Cyprus within its native range.
In Cyprus, it occurs mainly in places with shrubs or trees that provide support, including:
- scrub and Mediterranean maquis,
- woodland margins,
- hedges and field boundaries,
- ravines and stream valleys,
- shaded or partly shaded slopes,
- rocky sites,
- old walls and abandoned cultivation,
- sites with relatively deep and seasonally moist soil.
Its underground storage organ allows the plant to survive the dry season, when the above-ground parts may die back.
The native non-endemic species
610. Dioscorea communis (L.) Caddick & Wilkin · Species
Dioscorea communis is a native non-endemic perennial climbing geophyte. It is commonly known in English as black bryony.
Despite its English common name, it is not related to the true bryonies of the genus Bryonia, which belong to the Cucurbitaceae.
The plant develops from a large, fleshy and generally irregularly shaped underground tuber. New twining stems emerge from it each year.
The stems are slender and smooth and frequently become reddish or purplish. They twine around neighbouring stems and may form dense climbing growth.
The leaves are alternate, glossy, broad and generally heart-shaped, with a pointed apex. Their strong, curved veins arise near the base and extend towards the tip.
The species is dioecious. Male and female flowers are borne on separate plants. The flowers are small and yellowish-green and develop in slender inflorescences arising from the leaf axils.
Following fertilization, female plants develop spherical, fleshy fruits. The fruits are initially green and become bright red when mature.
The red fruits frequently remain conspicuous as the leaves begin to dry, making the plant particularly noticeable in its natural habitat.
Flora of Cyprus records the species as indigenous and non-endemic.
Taxonomic note
For many years, the species was known under the name:
Tamus communis L.
More recent taxonomic and phylogenetic studies placed Tamus within the more broadly defined genus Dioscorea. The accepted name used in the organized Cypriot checklist is:
Dioscorea communis (L.) Caddick & Wilkin.
Flora of Cyprus lists Tamus communis as a synonym. It also includes the name Dioscorea cretica (L.) M. Campos, Wilkin & Viruel in the synonymy of the Cypriot taxon.
This article follows exclusively the name used in the organized checklist and does not add a second taxon.
Identification
Dioscorea communis can be identified by the following combination of characteristics:
- perennial climbing growth,
- slender twining stems without tendrils,
- broad and generally heart-shaped leaves,
- strong curved veins,
- small yellowish-green flowers,
- male and female flowers on separate plants,
- spherical, glossy red fruits,
- a large underground tuber.
It may be confused with other climbing plants when flowers or fruits are absent. The shape and venation of the leaves, together with the absence of tendrils, are useful identification features.
Toxicity and precautions
Dioscorea communis is a toxic plant. Its red fruits are attractive but are not edible.
The tuber, stems, leaves and fruits contain substances that may cause irritation or poisoning. Consumption may result in serious gastrointestinal symptoms.
The plant’s sap may also irritate the skin. No part of the plant should be tasted or used without specialist knowledge.
Although some other Dioscorea species are cultivated as edible yams, this does not apply to the native Cypriot Dioscorea communis.
Ecological importance
Its dense climbing growth provides cover and microhabitats for insects, spiders and other small animals.
The small flowers provide a food source for visiting pollinators. Mature fruits may be consumed by animals able to tolerate the plant’s chemical compounds, thereby contributing to seed dispersal.
The underground organ stores nutrients and allows the plant to reappear each year, even when its above-ground parts have been destroyed.
Threats and protection
Potential local threats include:
- clearance of scrub,
- removal of hedges and field margins,
- destruction of riparian vegetation,
- widening of roads and paths,
- use of herbicides,
- uprooting of underground tubers,
- fires,
- urban development.
Conserving natural scrub, hedges, woodland margins and stream valleys protects both the species and numerous other climbing and shade-tolerant plants.
Because of its toxicity and the difficulty of removing the entire underground tuber, it should not be collected or transplanted from the natural environment.
