Στα νεότερα συστήματα ταξινόμησης των αγγειόσπερμων, όπως αυτό που ακολουθεί το Plants of the World Online, η Dipsacaceae περιλαμβάνεται σε μια ευρύτερα οριοθετημένη οικογένεια Caprifoliaceae και αντιμετωπίζεται ως συνώνυμό της.

1580. Pterocephalus multiflorus subsp. obtusifolius Holmboe · Subspecies

2025. Cephalaria syriaca (L.) Schrad. subsp. syriaca · Subspecies

2026. Pterocephalus plumosus (L.) Coult. · Species

Cephalaria

Lomelosia

Pterocephalus

Text by George Konstantinou

The Dipsacaceae, traditionally known as the teasel family, comprises mainly annual or perennial herbs and some subshrubs. It belongs to the order Dipsacales and is particularly diverse in the Mediterranean and the Near East.

A characteristic feature of the family is the concentration of numerous small flowers into dense, head-like inflorescences. At first sight, these inflorescences may resemble those of the Asteraceae, but the morphology of the individual flowers, calyx, ovary and fruits is different.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Dipsacaceae is represented in Cyprus by 3 genera and 11 taxa:

  • 6 native non-endemic taxa,
  • 3 endemic taxa of Cyprus,
  • no alien taxa,
  • no hybrids,
  • 2 taxa of uncertain status.

The three genera included in the checklist are Cephalaria, Lomelosia and Pterocephalus.

Taxonomic note

Dipsacaceae was traditionally recognized as a separate family. Flora of Cyprus and the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora continue to present these plants under Dipsacaceae.

In more recent angiosperm classification systems, including the one followed by Plants of the World Online, Dipsacaceae is included within a broadly circumscribed Caprifoliaceae and is treated as its synonym.

This article follows the classification of the organized Cypriot checklist. The genera Cephalaria, Lomelosia and Pterocephalus are therefore presented under Dipsacaceae and are not added again to the previously published Caprifoliaceae account.

Principal morphological characteristics

Members of the family are generally annual or perennial herbs. Some species, particularly those of dry and rocky areas, develop woody bases and grow as low subshrubs.

The stems are erect, ascending or branched. The leaves are usually opposite and lack stipules. They may be simple, entire, toothed, lobed or deeply pinnately divided.

The flowers are small, generally bisexual and grouped into dense, head-like inflorescences. Each head is surrounded by one or more rows of bracts forming an involucre.

The corolla is tubular and usually terminates in four or five lobes. The peripheral flowers may be larger and more asymmetrical than those in the centre, making the entire inflorescence more attractive to pollinators.

The calyx may be small and cup-shaped or modified into long bristles or awns. These bristles frequently remain on the mature fruit and contribute to its dispersal.

The ovary is inferior and contains one functional ovule. The fruit is small, dry, one-seeded and indehiscent.

Pollination and dispersal

The dense inflorescences function as single visual units and attract bees, butterflies, flies and other insects.

The flowers within a head do not always open simultaneously. Their gradual opening extends the period during which the inflorescence offers nectar and pollen.

Mature fruits may be dispersed:

  • by wind,
  • by gravity,
  • by attachment to animals,
  • through the movement of dry inflorescences,
  • by surface water flow.

The persistent calyx bristles or awns increase the fruit’s surface area and may assist its transport.

Distribution and habitats

The traditionally circumscribed Dipsacaceae occurs mainly in Europe, the Mediterranean, northern and eastern Africa and western and central Asia.

In Cyprus, members of the family occur in:

  • phrygana and Mediterranean maquis,
  • dry grasslands,
  • rocky and stony slopes,
  • limestone and ophiolitic formations,
  • woodland openings,
  • roadsides and path margins,
  • abandoned fields,
  • mountain and submontane habitats,
  • coastal and inland dry areas.

Annual species generally complete their life cycle during the wet season and dry out in summer. Perennial and shrubby taxa survive through their persistent bases or underground root systems.

Native non-endemic taxa

Cephalaria

  1. Cephalaria syriaca subsp. phoeniciaca Bobr. · Subspecies

A herbaceous taxon with upright stems and head-like inflorescences. As in other members of the genus, the small flowers develop on a common receptacle and are surrounded by bracts.

Lomelosia

  1. Lomelosia argentea (L.) Greuter & Burdet · Species
  2. Lomelosia brachiata (Sm.) Greuter & Burdet · Species
  3. Lomelosia divaricata (Jacq.) Greuter & Burdet · Species
  4. Lomelosia prolifera (L.) Greuter & Burdet · Species

The four native non-endemic species of Lomelosia include annual and perennial plants of dry, open and stony habitats.

They are distinguished by the form of their stems and leaves, the size and shape of the flower heads, the involucral bracts, the form of the epicalyx and the number and length of the calyx bristles.

Pterocephalus

  1. Pterocephalus brevis Coult. · Species

A small herbaceous species of dry and open habitats. Pterocephalus is characterized by head-like inflorescences and fruits crowned by conspicuous, frequently plumose calyx bristles.

Endemic taxa of Cyprus

1578. Lomelosia cyprica (Post) Greuter & Burdet · Species

Lomelosia cyprica is endemic to Cyprus. It is a perennial plant with a woody base and represents a distinctive element of the Cypriot flora.

Its leaves are deeply pinnately divided. The numerous small flowers are grouped in head-like inflorescences and are milky-white or whitish. The calyx bristles are conspicuous and extend around the mature fruit.

Flora of Cyprus records it from elevations of approximately 50 to 1,150 metres. It occurs in dry, stony and rocky sites, on slopes, in open scrub and in other habitats with limited competition from dense vegetation.

1579. Pterocephalus multiflorus Poech subsp. multiflorus · Subspecies

Pterocephalus multiflorus subsp. multiflorus is an endemic subspecies of Cyprus.

It is a perennial herb or low subshrub with numerous flowering stems. Its flowers are grouped into dense heads, and the mature fruits bear the characteristic calyx bristles.

1580. Pterocephalus multiflorus subsp. obtusifolius Holmboe · Subspecies

Pterocephalus multiflorus subsp. obtusifolius is also endemic to Cyprus.

Its distinction from the typical subspecies is based on a combination of morphological characteristics, including leaf form, growth habit and details of the inflorescences and fruits.

Flora of Cyprus notes that separating the two subspecies is sometimes difficult. Reliable identification requires mature plants and comparison of more than one characteristic.

Taxa of uncertain status

2025. Cephalaria syriaca (L.) Schrad. subsp. syriaca · Subspecies

Cephalaria syriaca subsp. syriaca is placed among the taxa of uncertain status in the organized checklist.

Its occurrence, taxonomic identity or the precise status of the Cypriot records requires confirmation. It should not be confused with the native Cephalaria syriaca subsp. phoeniciaca.

2026. Pterocephalus plumosus (L.) Coult. · Species

Pterocephalus plumosus is also classified as a taxon of uncertain status.

Its acceptance as an established member of the Cypriot flora requires further documentation. Distinguishing it from other members of the genus requires examination of the leaves, bracts, fruits and plumose calyx bristles.

Identification of the genera

Cephalaria

Species of this genus are generally upright herbs with head-like inflorescences on relatively long stalks. The receptacle bears bracts between the individual flowers.

Lomelosia

The genus includes annual, perennial and subshrubby plants. Identification relies particularly on the epicalyx, calyx bristles, involucral bracts and features of the mature fruit.

Pterocephalus

The genus is characterized by dense flower heads and by long, frequently plumose bristles forming a conspicuous crown around the mature fruits.

Ecological importance

The flowers of Dipsacaceae are important sources of nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, moths, flies and other insects.

The concentration of numerous small flowers in a single head allows pollinators to visit many flowers without constantly moving between plants.

Dry inflorescences and one-seeded fruits provide food or material for various small animals. Perennial and shrubby forms also offer cover and microhabitats in dry and rocky areas.

The three endemic taxa form an important part of Cyprus’s unique natural heritage and biogeographical history.

Threats and protection

Potential threats to endemic and locally restricted taxa include:

  • urban and tourism development,
  • quarrying and excavation,
  • road widening,
  • clearance of rocky slopes,
  • fires,
  • overgrazing or complete abandonment of grazing,
  • use of herbicides,
  • collection of plants,
  • spread of competitive alien species,
  • prolonged drought.

Their protection requires the conservation of natural rocky and scrub habitats, avoidance of damage to known populations and systematic monitoring of the endemic taxa.

The two taxa of uncertain status require additional field research, collection of suitable material and careful taxonomic confirmation.
