Το Plants of the World Online χρησιμοποιεί σήμερα ευρύτερη οριοθέτηση της οικογένειας Polypodiaceae και τοποθετεί εκεί το γένος Dryopteris.
Το Plants of the World Online
617. Dryopteris pallida subsp. libanotica (Rosenst.) E. Nardi · Subspecies
2027. Dryopteris pallida (Bory) Fomin subsp. pallida · Subspecies
Το Plants of the World Online αναγνωρίζει το Dryopteris pallida subsp. pallida και δίνει για το είδος Dryopteris pallida ευρύτερη φυσική εξάπλωση από τη Μεσόγειο μέχρι το Ιράν.

Text by George Konstantinou
The Dryopteridaceae, commonly known as the wood fern family or shield fern family, is a family of ferns belonging to the order Polypodiales.
It comprises mainly perennial terrestrial or lithophytic ferns with underground rhizomes and large, generally pinnately divided fronds. Many species grow in shaded, cool and relatively moist places within forests, ravines and rocky crevices.
Members of the family are seedless vascular plants. They do not produce flowers, fruits or seeds but reproduce by spores formed in sporangia on the lower surface of their fronds.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Dryopteridaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 2 taxa:
- 1 native non-endemic subspecies,
- no endemic taxa,
- no alien taxa,
- no hybrids,
- 1 subspecies of uncertain status.
The only genus of the family included in the checklist is Dryopteris.
Taxonomic note
The circumscription of fern families differs among modern taxonomic systems.
Flora of Cyprus and the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora place Dryopteris in the family Dryopteridaceae.
Plants of the World Online currently uses a broader circumscription of Polypodiaceae and places Dryopteris within that family.
This article follows the classification of the organized Cypriot checklist. The two Cypriot taxa are therefore presented under Dryopteridaceae.
Principal morphological characteristics
Species of Dryopteris are generally perennial ferns with short, upright or oblique underground rhizomes. Clusters of leaves, known as fronds, arise from the rhizome.
Young fronds emerge tightly coiled and are frequently covered with brown scales. As they grow, they gradually unfurl and form an upright or spreading cluster.
Each frond consists of a stalk and a blade. The stalk is generally strong and bears conspicuous scales, particularly near its base.
The blade is elongated, lance-shaped or triangular and is divided into pinnae. The pinnae may be pinnatifid or further divided into smaller pinnules.
The sori, which are groups of sporangia, develop on the lower surface of mature fronds. They are generally rounded and are initially covered by a delicate, kidney-shaped indusium.
The form of the indusium, the position of the sori, the scales of the stalk and rhizome and the division of the frond are important taxonomic characteristics.
Reproduction and life cycle
When the sporangia mature, they become brown and release numerous microscopic spores.
The spores are transported mainly by wind. If they reach a suitable moist surface, they may germinate and form a small gametophyte known as a prothallus.
The male and female reproductive organs develop on the prothallus. Water is required for fertilization.
Following fertilization, a new sporophyte develops and gradually forms the rhizome and characteristic fronds of the mature fern.
Distribution and habitats
The Dryopteridaceae, in its traditional circumscription, has an almost worldwide distribution. Dryopteris is particularly diverse in temperate and mountain regions.
Dryopteris pallida is a Mediterranean and western Asian fern complex. Plants of the World Online gives its native distribution as extending from the Mediterranean to Iran and includes Cyprus.
In Cyprus, members of the genus are associated mainly with:
- shaded rock crevices,
- the bases of cliffs,
- rocky slopes,
- ravines and stream valleys,
- shaded woodland sites,
- moist rock faces and old stone walls,
- mountain sites protected from direct sunlight.
Moisture in the substrate is particularly important for spore germination and the development of young plants.
The native non-endemic subspecies
617. Dryopteris pallida subsp. libanotica (Rosenst.) E. Nardi · Subspecies
Dryopteris pallida subsp. libanotica is a native non-endemic subspecies of Cyprus. It is a perennial fern whose natural distribution is centred in the eastern Mediterranean.
It develops from a strong, short rhizome covered with scales. The fronds form a cluster and may be upright, ascending or slightly arching.
The stalk is generally shorter than the blade and bears brown scales. The blade is elongated to lance-shaped and pinnately divided.
The pinnae are divided into smaller segments with toothed or lobed margins. Their precise form may vary according to the age of the frond, shade and available moisture.
The rounded sori develop on the lower surface of mature fronds. They are initially covered by a delicate, kidney-shaped indusium.
Flora of Cyprus records the subspecies as an indigenous, non-endemic geophyte.
The subspecies of uncertain status
2027. Dryopteris pallida (Bory) Fomin subsp. pallida · Subspecies
Dryopteris pallida subsp. pallida is classified among the taxa of uncertain status in the organized checklist.
Its occurrence in Cyprus, the precise taxonomic identity of the relevant records or its distinction from Dryopteris pallida subsp. libanotica requires confirmation.
Plants of the World Online recognizes Dryopteris pallida subsp. pallida and gives the species Dryopteris pallida a broader native distribution extending from the Mediterranean to Iran.
Its acceptance in international databases does not change its status in the organized Cypriot checklist. Until the Cypriot records are confirmed, it remains in the category of uncertain status.
Distinguishing the two subspecies
Distinguishing the subspecies of Dryopteris pallida can be difficult and should not be based solely on the plant’s general appearance.
Identification involves examining:
- the outline and size of the frond,
- the length of the stalk in relation to the blade,
- the degree of division of the pinnae,
- the shape and toothing of the pinnules,
- the colour, size and form of the scales,
- the presence or absence of glands and hairs,
- the position and size of the sori,
- the form of the indusium,
- characteristics of the spores.
Mature, spore-bearing fronds and comparison of several morphological characteristics are required for reliable identification. Photographs of the entire plant are not always sufficient.
Ecological importance
Ferns of the genus Dryopteris form an important part of the flora of shaded rocks, woodland habitats and moist mountain microhabitats.
Their fronds provide cover for insects, spiders, snails and other small animals. Their root systems help retain fine soil within rock crevices.
Dead fronds decompose and add organic matter to places where soil formation is limited.
Their presence is frequently associated with stable microhabitats that retain shade and moisture for a significant part of the year.
Threats and protection
The main potential threats are associated with changes to the small, shaded and moist sites where the plants grow.
These include:
- destruction or clearance of rocky slopes,
- widening of roads and paths,
- excavation,
- removal of woodland vegetation,
- reduction of shade,
- fires,
- prolonged drought,
- changes in water flow around springs and streams,
- collection of plants,
- destruction of old walls supporting fern populations.
Their protection requires maintaining natural shade and moisture, avoiding destructive work at known sites and monitoring the populations.
Additional field research and the collection of suitable material are required for Dryopteris pallida subsp. pallida to confirm its occurrence and taxonomic identity in Cyprus.
