Elatine
618. Elatine macropoda Guss.

The family Elatinaceae is a small family of angiosperms belonging to the order Malpighiales. It mainly comprises small herbaceous plants associated with wet, periodically flooded or aquatic habitats.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Elatinaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon:
- Elatine – 1 species
The only member of the family included in the checklist is Elatine macropoda Guss., an indigenous, non-endemic species.
Morphology
Members of the family Elatinaceae are generally small annual or perennial herbaceous plants. They may be creeping, amphibious or aquatic and frequently form low-growing patches on wet or muddy substrates.
The leaves are simple, usually opposite or arranged in whorls, with small stipules at their bases. The flowers are very small, radially symmetrical and generally bisexual. They occur singly or in small groups in the leaf axils.
The calyx and corolla consist of a small number of parts, while the fruit is a capsule containing numerous small seeds. The small size of both the plants and their flowers makes them easy to overlook.
Distribution and habitats
The family has a broad global distribution, particularly in areas with freshwater habitats, seasonal wetlands and periodically flooded soils.
In Cyprus, Elatine macropoda is associated with seasonal wetlands, temporary pools, shallow water and muddy sites that are flooded during the wet season and gradually dry out.
The visible occurrence of the plant may vary considerably from one year to another. During periods of insufficient rainfall it may not develop above ground, while its seeds can remain in the soil and germinate when suitable moisture conditions return.
Indigenous non-endemic taxa
Elatine
618. Elatine macropoda Guss. · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic
A small annual aquatic or amphibious plant adapted to seasonally flooded sites. Its slender stems may be creeping or slightly ascending and bear small opposite leaves.
The flowers are very small and develop in the leaf axils. The fruit is a small capsule containing numerous seeds. The species completes its short life cycle while sufficient moisture remains in the substrate.
Elatine macropoda is an accepted species with a native Mediterranean distribution. Apart from Cyprus, it occurs in countries and islands of southern Europe, North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean.
Endemic, alien, hybrid and uncertain-status taxa
The organized checklist of the Cypriot flora records no:
- endemic taxa of Cyprus,
- alien or naturalized taxa,
- hybrids,
- taxa of uncertain status
within the family Elatinaceae.
Ecology
Elatine macropoda is a characteristic component of the specialized vegetation of temporary Mediterranean wetlands. These ecosystems are flooded during winter or spring and dry out during the warm season.
The cycle of seasonal flooding and drying is essential for maintaining their distinctive plant communities. Small annual plants grow rapidly, flower and produce seeds before the substrate dries completely.
Their seeds form a persistent soil seed bank, enabling populations to survive dry periods and reappear when suitable hydrological conditions return.
Threats and protection
Temporary wetlands are sensitive habitats. Potential pressures affecting Elatine macropoda and its associated vegetation include:
- drainage or infilling of wetlands,
- alteration of the natural hydrological regime,
- extraction or diversion of water,
- pollution and nutrient enrichment,
- excessive trampling,
- agricultural and other disturbance around wetland margins,
- prolonged periods of drought.
The protection of the species depends mainly on preserving seasonal wetlands and their natural cycle of flooding and drying. Because the plant is very small and may not be visible during dry years, surveys should be conducted in the appropriate season and, whenever possible, over more than one year.
