  • Quercus – 4 taxa

Quercus

835. Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris (A. Kern.)

Quercus

Quercus

1951. Quercus ×campitica Hadjik.

Quercus alnifolia Poech × Quercus coccifera subsp. calliprinos (Webb) Holmboe

Το Plants of the World Online αναγνωρίζει το Quercus ×campitica ως αποδεκτό υβρίδιο με φυσική εξάπλωση αποκλειστικά στην Κύπρο.

The family Fagaceae, commonly known as the beech family, is an important family of woody angiosperms belonging to the order Fagales. It mainly comprises large trees and shrubs, including oaks, beeches and chestnuts.

In Cyprus, the family is represented exclusively by the genus Quercus, the oaks. Its members are major components of forests, shrublands and natural Mediterranean vegetation.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Fagaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 4 taxa:

  • Quercus – 4 taxa

According to their status, the checklist records:

  • 2 indigenous non-endemic taxa
  • 1 endemic species of Cyprus
  • 1 natural hybrid
  • no alien or naturalized taxa
  • no taxa of uncertain status

Morphology

Members of the family Fagaceae are woody plants, generally trees or large shrubs. They may be evergreen, semi-evergreen or deciduous.

The leaves are simple, alternate and usually leathery. Their margins may be entire, toothed, spiny or lobed. Leaf characteristics frequently show considerable variation, even on the same tree.

Oaks are monoecious plants, meaning that male and female flowers develop on the same individual. Their flowers are small and wind-pollinated, without conspicuous petals.

The male flowers are generally borne in long, hanging catkins, while the female flowers occur singly or in small groups. The fruit is the acorn, a single-seeded nut whose base is surrounded by a cup-shaped structure known as the cupule.

Distribution and habitats

The family Fagaceae is widely distributed, mainly throughout the temperate and subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Its members form some of the most important forest ecosystems of Europe, Asia and North America.

In Cyprus, oaks occur from sea level to the mountainous regions of Troodos. They grow in:

  • Mediterranean shrublands,
  • phrygana and maquis vegetation,
  • pine and mixed forests,
  • rocky slopes,
  • ravines and valleys,
  • field boundaries and traditional agricultural landscapes,
  • mountain forests and steep igneous slopes.

Indigenous non-endemic taxa

Quercus

834. Quercus coccifera subsp. calliprinos (Webb) Holmboe · Subspecies · Indigenous, non-endemic

An evergreen, much-branched shrub or tree with a dense crown and tough, leathery leaves. Its leaves are generally ovate or oblong, with spiny or strongly toothed margins, particularly on young plants and lower shoots.

The bark is grey to brown and becomes deeply fissured on old trees. The acorns are elongated, and their bases are surrounded by cupules bearing hard, projecting scales.

It is the most widespread member of the family in Cyprus and is recorded from sea level to approximately 1,375 metres. It may occur as a low shrub in dry and heavily grazed areas or develop into a large tree when protected from repeated disturbance.

It grows in phrygana, maquis vegetation, rocky slopes, pine forests, valleys and agricultural landscapes. It is resistant to drought, grazing and periodic fire and can resprout from its base after damage.

835. Quercus infectoria subsp. veneris (A. Kern.) Meikle · Subspecies · Indigenous, non-endemic

A deciduous or semi-evergreen tree with a broad crown. Its leaves are generally larger and thinner than those of Quercus coccifera subsp. calliprinos, with wavy, toothed or shallowly lobed margins.

The acorns are borne singly or in small groups, with their bases enclosed in cupules bearing small, appressed scales. The tender new shoots and leaves emerge in spring.

In Cyprus it is recorded from sea level to approximately 1,375 metres. It occurs locally in valleys, ravines, on slopes, along cultivated-field boundaries and in other habitats with relatively deeper or moister soils.

The native range of the subspecies extends from the eastern Mediterranean to Iran. Outside Cyprus, it is recorded in the eastern Aegean islands, Türkiye, the Middle East, the Caucasus, Iraq and Iran.

Endemic taxa of Cyprus

Quercus

1589. Quercus alnifolia Poech · Species · Endemic to Cyprus

Quercus alnifolia, known in Cyprus as latzia and in English as the golden oak, is an evergreen shrub or small to medium-sized tree endemic exclusively to Cyprus.

Its natural distribution is restricted to the igneous rocks of the Troodos mountain range. It forms extensive stands on rocky slopes, in steep ravines, open pine forests and other mountain habitats.

The leaves are thick and leathery. Their upper surface is dark green and glossy, while the lower surface is covered with dense golden-yellow or golden-brown hairs. This characteristic explains the English common name golden oak.

Young leaves and shoots frequently show striking golden or reddish tones. Flowering occurs mainly during April and May. The acorns mature within cupules bearing conspicuous scales.

Latzia is one of the most characteristic endemic plants of Cyprus and has been designated as the national tree of the Republic of Cyprus.

Its dense growth helps stabilize steep mountain slopes, reduce erosion and create suitable microhabitats for many other plants, fungi and animals.

Hybrids

Quercus

1951. Quercus ×campitica Hadjik. & Hand · Hybrid · Natural hybrid

Quercus ×campitica is a natural hybrid between:

Quercus alnifolia Poech × Quercus coccifera subsp. calliprinos (Webb) Holmboe

It is a natural hybrid endemic to Cyprus and develops in zones where populations of the two parental taxa come into contact.

It shows intermediate morphological characteristics. Its leaves may be greener beneath than those of Quercus alnifolia but retain some of the golden hairs. Leaf shape and serration, together with the characteristics of the cupules and acorns, combine features of the two parents to varying degrees.

Identification is not always easy because morphological characteristics may vary among different hybrid individuals.

Plants of the World Online recognizes Quercus ×campitica as an accepted hybrid with a native distribution restricted to Cyprus.

Alien and uncertain-status taxa

The organized checklist of the Cypriot flora records no:

  • alien or naturalized taxa,
  • taxa of uncertain status

within the family Fagaceae.

Ecological importance

Oaks are among the most important woody plants in Cypriot ecosystems. Their large and long-lived stands create shade, retain soil and contribute to the formation of organic matter.

Acorns provide food for birds, rodents and other animals. Animals that carry or store acorns can contribute to the natural regeneration and spread of oak trees.

Their trunks, branches, bark, leaves and dead wood support a great variety of:

  • insects and other invertebrates,
  • lichens,
  • mosses,
  • fungi,
  • birds,
  • small mammals.

Their roots form mycorrhizal associations with fungi, facilitating the uptake of water and nutrients and contributing to the health of the entire forest ecosystem.

Threats and protection

Although some Cypriot oaks are relatively widespread, their populations and habitats may be affected by:

  • wildfires of high intensity or frequency,
  • clearance of natural vegetation,
  • residential and tourism development,
  • road construction and earthworks,
  • quarrying activities,
  • overgrazing and destruction of young saplings,
  • illegal logging or removal of old trees,
  • prolonged drought,
  • climate change,
  • diseases and harmful organisms.

Old and ancient trees are especially valuable because they provide irreplaceable cavities, dead wood and other microhabitats.

Protection of mature trees, natural forest regeneration, prevention of repeated fires and conservation of contact zones between latzia and Quercus coccifera subsp. calliprinos are also important for preserving the natural hybrid Quercus ×campitica.
