Myriophyllum

Myriophyllum spicatum L.

The family Haloragaceae, known as the watermilfoil family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Saxifragales. It includes 8 accepted genera and approximately 150 species, with a worldwide distribution. Most species occur in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly in Australia, while the genus Myriophyllum has an almost cosmopolitan distribution.

The family includes aquatic, helophytic and terrestrial herbaceous plants, as well as some small shrubs. Many species live in lakes, rivers, streams, marshes, reservoirs and other wetland formations.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Haloragaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon. It is the alien and naturalized aquatic species Myriophyllum spicatum L.

General characteristics

The members of the family display considerable morphological diversity because of their adaptation to different aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Aquatic species are usually perennial and rooted in the bottom, with flexible stems growing through the water and sometimes reaching its surface.

The leaves are simple or deeply divided and are arranged oppositely, alternately or in whorls. In the genus Myriophyllum, the submerged leaves are usually pinnately divided into numerous fine segments, giving the plant its characteristic feathery appearance.

The flowers are small and relatively inconspicuous. They may be bisexual or unisexual and arranged in spikes, racemes or small groups. In aquatic species, the flowering spikes usually develop above the water’s surface. The fruit is small and dry and often separates at maturity into individual one-seeded segments.

The family Haloragaceae in Cyprus

The only member of the family included in the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora is Myriophyllum spicatum L. It is a completely submerged aquatic plant, except for the flowering spike that projects above the water’s surface.

In Cyprus, the species is considered Naturalized non-invasive (NN). It is not endemic, and its presence on the island is attributed to its introduction and subsequent establishment in suitable aquatic habitats.

Alien and naturalized taxa

Myriophyllum

  1. Myriophyllum spicatum L. – Species – Naturalized non-invasive (NN)

Total: 1 genus and 1 taxon.

Myriophyllum spicatum L.

Myriophyllum spicatum, known in English as Eurasian watermilfoil or spiked watermilfoil, is a perennial submerged aquatic plant. Its native distribution covers a large part of the temperate Old World and mountainous regions of the tropics.

Its long, flexible stems grow underwater and often branch near the surface. The leaves are usually arranged in whorls around the stem and are pinnately divided into many fine, thread-like segments. This form increases the surface area of the leaf and allows the efficient exchange of gases and nutrients in the water.

The slender flowering spike develops above the water’s surface. The flowers are small and arranged in whorls. The female flowers are usually situated on the lower part of the spike, while the male flowers occur on its upper part.

Habitats in Cyprus

Myriophyllum spicatum grows in fresh or slightly brackish, standing or slow-moving waters. It may occur in:

  • lakes and small natural water bodies,
  • dams and reservoirs,
  • irrigation reservoirs,
  • calm sections of rivers and streams,
  • canals and ditches with permanent water,
  • marshes and other inland wetlands.

In Cyprus, it has been recorded at altitudes between 550 and 600 metres. Its presence depends directly on the retention of water for a sufficiently long period.

Reproduction and dispersal

The species reproduces by seeds, but vegetative reproduction is usually its most effective means of spreading. Stem fragments can become detached, be transported by water and take root in a new location, creating new plants.

Pollination takes place mainly by wind, as the flowering spikes project above the water’s surface. The fruits and plant fragments can be dispersed by water currents, birds, fishing equipment, boats and human activities.

Ecological role

The submerged stands of the plant provide shelter and growing surfaces for aquatic invertebrates, fish eggs and other small organisms. They also contribute to oxygen production, the retention of suspended particles and the creation of structurally complex underwater vegetation.

The plant forms part of the food chain of aquatic ecosystems. Its tender parts may be consumed by aquatic invertebrates, fish and waterbirds, while its dense stands provide protection for small animals.

Adaptations to the aquatic environment

The fine and highly divided leaves reduce water resistance and limit the risk of mechanical damage from water currents. At the same time, they provide a large surface area for photosynthesis and the direct absorption of dissolved nutrients.

The flexible stems follow the movement of the water without breaking easily. The ability of detached fragments to develop roots allows the species to recover rapidly following natural or human-induced disturbance.

Potential for extensive spread

In areas outside its natural distribution, particularly in North America, Myriophyllum spicatum has developed into a serious invasive aquatic plant. It may form dense surface mats, reduce the amount of light entering the water, displace other aquatic plants and obstruct fishing, swimming and the movement of small boats.

The impacts recorded in other countries should not automatically be transferred to Cyprus. On the island, the species is classified as naturalized non-invasive. Nevertheless, its considerable capacity for vegetative reproduction justifies the monitoring of its populations.

Monitoring and management

Monitoring should focus on the spread of the plant within dams, reservoirs and natural wetlands. Particular attention is required when boats, nets, fishing equipment or machinery are transferred between different water bodies, because even small stem fragments can create new plants.

Mechanical cutting without collecting the plant fragments may increase rather than limit its dispersal. Any management intervention should be based on the actual extent of the population and an assessment of its potential effects on the particular aquatic ecosystem.
