Elaeagnus

Elaeagnus angustifolia L.

The family Elaeagnaceae, known as the oleaster family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Rosales. It includes 3 accepted genera—Elaeagnus, Hippophae and Shepherdia—and approximately 100 species, distributed mainly throughout the temperate and subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Elaeagnaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon. It is the alien and naturalized species Elaeagnus angustifolia L.

Taxonomic position

The family Elaeagnaceae is classified as follows:

  • Kingdom: Plantae
  • Clade: Angiosperms
  • Clade: Eudicots
  • Order: Rosales
  • Family: Elaeagnaceae
  • Genus in Cyprus: Elaeagnus
  • Species in Cyprus: Elaeagnus angustifolia L.

General characteristics

The members of the family are deciduous or evergreen shrubs and small trees, which may possess thorns. One of their most characteristic features is the silvery or brown scales covering the young shoots, leaves and often the fruits.

The leaves are simple and entire and are arranged oppositely or alternately, depending on the genus. The flowers are usually small, without true petals, solitary or arranged in small inflorescences. The calyx is tubular and is usually divided into two to four lobes.

The fruit externally resembles a drupe or berry. Botanically, it is a dry fruit surrounded by the fleshy and persistent floral tube.

Of particular ecological importance is the ability of the plants of the family to form symbiotic nodules on their roots with nitrogen-fixing actinobacteria of the genus Frankia. In this way, they can grow in poor and degraded soils.

The family Elaeagnaceae in Cyprus

In Cyprus, only the genus Elaeagnus is recorded, with the species Elaeagnus angustifolia L. The species is not a native element of the Cypriot flora. It was introduced to the island through cultivation and is currently classified as Naturalized non-invasive (NN).

It may occur as an ornamental or planted tree, as well as a self-sown descendant of cultivated plants. In Cyprus, it has been recorded from sea level up to an altitude of approximately 1,375 metres.

Alien and naturalized taxa

Elaeagnus

  1. Elaeagnus angustifolia L. – Species – Naturalized non-invasive (NN)

Total: 1 genus and 1 taxon.

Elaeagnus angustifolia L.

Elaeagnus angustifolia, known in English as Russian olive or oleaster, is a deciduous, often thorny shrub or small tree. Its native distribution extends from eastern Europe to the temperate regions of Asia.

Its leaves are narrow, lanceolate and covered with dense silvery scales, particularly on their lower surface. The silvery appearance is one of the most characteristic identifying features of the species.

The flowers are small, fragrant, yellowish internally and silvery externally. They lack petals and attract pollinating insects. The fruits are ovoid, yellowish to yellowish-brown, with a silvery surface and mealy flesh.

Habitats in Cyprus

The species may be encountered in:

  • gardens and parks,
  • old plantations and abandoned cultivated areas,
  • roadsides,
  • field boundaries,
  • disturbed ground,
  • beds and banks of watercourses,
  • relatively moist sites,
  • mountainous and semi-mountainous areas.

It displays considerable tolerance to drought, wind, cold, salinity and soils of low fertility.

Reproduction and dispersal

Elaeagnus angustifolia reproduces by seeds, but it may also spread vegetatively through suckers and shoots developing from the roots.

The fragrant flowers are pollinated mainly by insects. The fruits are eaten by birds and other animals, which contribute to seed dispersal. The seeds may also be transported by water, soil or human activities.

Environmental adaptations

The silvery scales of the leaves reflect part of the solar radiation and reduce water loss. The extensive root system allows the plant to utilize moisture from deeper layers of the soil.

The symbiosis of the roots with bacteria of the genus Frankia enables it to fix atmospheric nitrogen and become established in poor soils. The production of suckers helps it resprout following cutting or other disturbance.

Ecological and economic importance

Elaeagnus angustifolia has been planted in various countries as an ornamental tree, windbreak, shade plant and means of stabilizing the soil. It has also been used to reduce erosion and restore degraded areas. Its fruits are edible, although they have relatively dry and mealy flesh.

The flowers provide food for pollinating insects, while the fruits are eaten by birds and other animals. However, in certain countries the species has developed into a strongly invasive plant, particularly in riparian ecosystems, where it may form dense stands and compete with native vegetation.

It should not be assumed that the impacts observed in other countries necessarily also occur in Cyprus. On the island, the species is currently classified as naturalized non-invasive.

Monitoring and management

Because it is an alien species with demonstrated invasive behaviour in other regions of the world, monitoring its spread in Cyprus is useful, particularly near watercourses, wetlands and natural ecosystems.

Its uncontrolled planting near ecologically sensitive areas should be avoided. Young self-sown plants may be removed before they produce fruit if they are found to threaten natural vegetation. During removal, root suckers, which may cause renewed growth, must be taken into consideration.
