  • Το Tradescantia fluminensis καταγράφεται στην τρέχουσα δυναμική βάση Flora of Cyprus ως εγκλιματισμένο μη εισβλητικό – Naturalized non-invasive (NN).

Η τρέχουσα Flora of Cyprus το χαρακτηρίζει ως εγκλιματισμένο μη εισβλητικό – Naturalized non-invasive (NN).

The family Commelinaceae, known as the dayflower family or spiderwort family, is a family of monocotyledonous flowering plants belonging to the order Commelinales. It includes approximately 40–41 genera and more than 730 species.

Its members are distributed mainly throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Australia. A smaller number of species extends into the warm temperate zones.

The family displays very great morphological diversity in its flowers and inflorescences. It consists mainly of herbaceous plants of moist, shaded or disturbed habitats, although certain species are adapted to seasonally dry regions.

According to the organized checklist of the Cyprus flora, the family Commelinaceae is represented in Cyprus by 2 genera and 2 taxa. Both are included in the category of alien or naturalized taxa. No native non-endemic, endemic, hybrid or uncertain-status taxa of the family are recorded.

Status of the two taxa in Cyprus

The two taxa have different detailed statuses:

  • Commelina communis is recorded as a Casual alien (CA).
  • Tradescantia fluminensis is recorded in the current dynamic Flora of Cyprus database as Naturalized non-invasive (NN).

Tradescantia fluminensis was presented in a 2019 scientific publication as a newly recorded invasive alien plant from three rivers in Cyprus. However, the current Flora of Cyprus database assigns the species the status Naturalized non-invasive (NN). This article follows the present recorded status while emphasizing that continued monitoring is required.

General characteristics

The members of Commelinaceae are mainly annual or perennial herbs. They may be erect, spreading, creeping, climbing or, more rarely, epiphytic.

The stems are generally succulent, flexible and conspicuously jointed, with swollen nodes and elongated internodes. Many species readily root at the nodes when the stems come into contact with moist soil.

The roots are fibrous or, in certain species, fleshy and tuberous. The plants may also form rhizomes or stolons.

The leaves are alternate, simple, entire and parallel-veined. They are arranged in two rows or spirally along the stem.

The base of each leaf forms a closed sheath around the stem. Unlike grasses, the sheath lacks a ligule. The blade is usually ovate, lanceolate or linear and may be thin or slightly succulent.

The young tissues of many species contain mucilaginous substances and calcium oxalate crystals in the form of raphides. Fragile, watery stems are characteristic of several ornamental species.

Flowers and inflorescences

The inflorescences are usually determinate and consist of one or more helicoid cymes. They may be terminal or axillary and are frequently accompanied by large leaf-like or spathe-like bracts.

The flowers are generally bisexual, although male flowers also occur in certain species. They may be actinomorphic or zygomorphic.

The calyx consists of three sepals and the corolla of three petals. The petals are often blue, violet, pink or white. In certain species, one petal is much smaller or differs in colour from the other two.

There are up to six stamens. Some may be fertile, while others are modified into conspicuous sterile stamens or staminodes. The staminodes may resemble small yellow anthers and function as visual signals attracting pollinators.

The stamen filaments frequently bear characteristic long or bead-like hairs. The ovary is superior, consists of three united carpels and is generally two- or three-chambered.

The fruit is usually a capsule that opens at maturity, although in certain species it is indehiscent or fleshy. The seeds contain starchy endosperm.

Ephemeral flowers

A characteristic feature of the family is the very short life of its flowers. Many flowers open in the morning and wither before the end of the same day.

The English name dayflower, used mainly for species of the genus Commelina, is derived from this characteristic.

The petals do not always dry in the conventional manner. In several species, their tissues liquefy or rapidly disintegrate after flowering.

The short duration of each flower is compensated for by the successive production of numerous flowers on different days.

Commelinaceae in Cyprus

The family has no native representative in the organized checklist. The two taxa were introduced through human activities, mainly as ornamentals or together with plant and soil material.

Both prefer locations with increased moisture compared with most drought-adapted plants of Cyprus. They can grow in gardens, nurseries, irrigated soils, banks, riverbeds, shaded sites and other moist or disturbed locations.

Commelina communis is mainly annual and spreads through seeds. Tradescantia fluminensis is a perennial creeping plant and spreads extremely effectively through stem fragments.

The genus Commelina

The genus Commelina includes approximately 200 species and is the largest genus of the family. The species are annual or perennial herbs with erect, ascending or creeping stems.

The inflorescences are enclosed by a characteristic folded bract known as a spathe. The spathe may retain moisture and mucilaginous liquid around the young flowers and developing fruits.

The flowers are generally zygomorphic and frequently possess two large, conspicuous petals and a much smaller third petal.

Description of Commelina communis

Commelina communis, known in English as the Asiatic dayflower, is an annual or occasionally short-lived perennial plant.

The stems are succulent, branched and erect, ascending or spreading. They can root at the lower nodes when they come into contact with moist soil.

The leaves are alternate, ovate to lanceolate, parallel-veined and possess a base that forms a sheath around the stem.

The inflorescence is enclosed by a green, folded and frequently heart-shaped spathe. The flowers possess two large, intense blue petals and a much smaller white or pale-coloured petal.

There are three fertile stamens and three conspicuous staminodes. The staminodes possess yellow, cross-shaped or petal-like structures resembling pollen-filled anthers.

This appearance may attract pollinators even though the staminodes do not produce functional pollen. The flowers lack nectar, and visitors are attracted mainly by pollen.

The fruit is a small capsule containing a few seeds. The seeds may be transported through soil, water, agricultural products and human activities.

Origin and presence of Commelina communis

The species originates from Asia, with a natural distribution extending from Siberia to Japan and Indo-China. It has been introduced to many parts of Europe and North America, where it may occur as a weed.

In Cyprus, it is recorded as a Casual alien (CA). This means that it has occurred outside cultivation, but the formation of stable, long-term self-sustaining populations has not yet been documented.

The species was recorded recently in the flora of Cyprus. Its presence should be monitored in nurseries, gardens, irrigated cultivation and moist disturbed locations.

The genus Tradescantia

The genus Tradescantia includes perennial, more rarely annual, herbs originating mainly from the Americas. Many species are cultivated for their foliage and flowers.

The stems are frequently succulent and fragile. They root readily at the nodes and can create dense ground cover.

The flowers possess three nearly equal petals and six stamens. The stamen filaments usually bear conspicuous hairs, which are characteristic of the genus.

Description of Tradescantia fluminensis

Tradescantia fluminensis is a creeping perennial herb with slender, succulent, flexible and fragile stems.

The stems spread over the ground and root at the nodes. Even small detached fragments can establish new plants when they reach moist soil.

The leaves are alternate, ovate to lanceolate, glossy, green and slightly succulent. Their base forms a closed sheath around the stem.

The flowers are small, white and consist of three petals. There are six stamens with hairy filaments and yellow anthers.

The plant can form dense layers of stems and leaves over the soil. Vegetative reproduction is generally more important than seed production for its local spread.

Origin and presence of Tradescantia fluminensis

The species originates from southern and southeastern Brazil and neighbouring parts of South America. It has been transported worldwide as an ornamental and ground-cover plant.

In many countries with moist climates, it has developed into a serious invasive plant of forests, streams and shaded habitats.

In Cyprus, it has been recorded in three rivers and at elevations of approximately 600–675 metres. The current Flora of Cyprus classifies it as Naturalized non-invasive (NN).

Because the species can spread very rapidly through stem fragments and is seriously invasive in other countries, its present non-invasive status in Cyprus should not lead to complacency.

Distinguishing the two Cypriot taxa

The two species are readily distinguished when in flower:

  • Commelina communis has two large blue petals and a much smaller white petal.
  • Tradescantia fluminensis has three nearly equal white petals.
  • The inflorescence of Commelina communis is enclosed by a folded green spathe.
  • Tradescantia fluminensis lacks the same characteristic closed spathe.
  • Commelina communis is mainly annual.
  • Tradescantia fluminensis is a perennial creeping plant.
  • Commelina communis spreads mainly through seeds.
  • Tradescantia fluminensis spreads very effectively through stem fragments.
  • Commelina communis is a casual alien in Cyprus.
  • Tradescantia fluminensis is naturalized non-invasive according to the current database.

Habitats in Cyprus

The two species may occur in:

  • Gardens and nurseries.
  • Irrigated cultivation.
  • Riverbanks and streambanks.
  • Watercourses with permanent or seasonal moisture.
  • Irrigation channels and drains.
  • Shaded locations beneath trees.
  • Spring margins.
  • Moist walls and slopes.
  • Abandoned gardens.
  • Sites where plant material is discarded.
  • Cool montane and submontane habitats.
  • Disturbed soils near settlements.

Tradescantia fluminensis is particularly favoured by shade, high moisture and the presence of thick leaf litter.

Ecology and pollination

The flowers attract mainly bees, flies and other pollen-collecting insects. Many species do not produce nectar and depend on visual signals and the provision of pollen.

In Commelina communis, the large blue petals and yellow staminodes create a strong colour contrast. The staminodes may visually enhance the impression of abundant pollen.

Self-pollination is possible in certain members of the family and can ensure seed production when pollinators are scarce.

Tradescantia fluminensis can create dense cover that provides a moist microenvironment for small invertebrates. At the same time, the dense cover may restrict light and germination beneath it.

Reproduction and dispersal

Commelina communis reproduces mainly through seeds. The seeds may be transported:

  • By water.
  • With soil and mud.
  • By agricultural machinery.
  • With nursery plants.
  • With crop seeds.
  • In garden waste.

Tradescantia fluminensis spreads mainly vegetatively. The stems break very easily, and every fragment containing one or more nodes can take root.

Fragments are transported through:

  • Flowing water.
  • Floods.
  • Stream-clearing operations.
  • Soil movement.
  • Tools and machinery.
  • Disposal of cuttings.
  • Animals and human traffic.

This form of reproduction makes removal difficult because even small fragments remaining on the ground can grow again.

Adaptations

The most important adaptations of the two taxa include:

  • Succulent stems that retain water.
  • Easy rooting at the nodes.
  • Rapid vegetative reproduction.
  • Stem flexibility.
  • Growth in shaded and moist locations.
  • Rapid coverage of bare soil.
  • Successive production of numerous ephemeral flowers.
  • The possibility of self-pollination under certain conditions.
  • Production of resistant seeds in Commelina communis.
  • Regeneration from very small fragments in Tradescantia fluminensis.
  • Tolerance of frequent disturbance and mechanical injury.

Ornamental and economic importance

Many members of Commelinaceae are cultivated as ornamentals for the vivid colours of their leaves and flowers. Genera such as Tradescantia, Callisia, Commelina and Dichorisandra include popular indoor and outdoor plants.

Tradescantia fluminensis was used as a ground-cover plant because it grows rapidly, tolerates shade and roots readily. However, the same characteristics increase its likelihood of escaping and becoming naturalized.

Certain Commelina species are locally used as vegetables or in traditional healing practices. These uses should not automatically be transferred to Commelina communis in Cyprus or regarded as evidence of safety.

Potential ecological impacts

If it spreads without control, Tradescantia fluminensis may cause:

  • Formation of dense layers of vegetation.
  • Reduction of light at the soil surface.
  • Restriction of native-seed germination.
  • Prevention of the regeneration of herbs and tree seedlings.
  • Alteration of leaf litter.
  • Changes in moisture near the soil surface.
  • Rapid spread along rivers.
  • Reappearance following incomplete removal.

These impacts are well known from other countries. Local research is required to determine their actual extent and intensity in Cyprus.

Commelina communis may become a weed of irrigated cultivation and gardens, but its present status in Cyprus remains casual.

Monitoring and management in Cyprus

Useful measures include:

  • Mapping all known populations.
  • Surveying rivers and streams downstream from known locations.
  • Monitoring nurseries and irrigated cultivation for Commelina communis.
  • Avoiding cultivation of Tradescantia fluminensis near rivers, springs and natural forests.
  • Preventing the disposal of living cuttings in natural areas.
  • Removing complete stems and all rooted nodes.
  • Collecting even small fragments following removal.
  • Safely drying or destroying plant material.
  • Carrying out repeated inspections because the plant can regrow.
  • Avoiding the movement of contaminated soil.
  • Limiting indiscriminate herbicide use near aquatic ecosystems.
  • Reassessing the status of Tradescantia fluminensis if rapid spread or ecological impact is recorded.
