- Το Allocasuarina verticillata καταγράφεται ως αβέβαιης κατάστασης – status to be clarified.
- Το Casuarina equisetifolia καταγράφεται ως αβέβαιης κατάστασης – status to be clarified.

Text by George Konstantinou
The family Casuarinaceae, known as the she-oak family or beefwood family, is a family of flowering trees and shrubs belonging to the order Fagales. It includes 4 genera and approximately 95 species, naturally distributed in Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea, southeastern Asia and the islands of the western Pacific.
The four recognized genera are Allocasuarina, Casuarina, Ceuthostoma and Gymnostoma. The greatest diversity of the family occurs in Australia.
The members of the family superficially resemble conifers or large species of Equisetum because of their slender green jointed branchlets and minute scale-like leaves. However, they are true flowering plants and are not closely related to conifers or horsetails.
According to the organized checklist of the Cyprus flora, the family Casuarinaceae is represented in Cyprus by 2 genera and 3 taxa. Of these, 1 is alien or naturalized and 2 are of uncertain status. No native non-endemic, endemic or hybrid taxa of the family are recorded.
Status of the taxa in Cyprus
The three taxa do not have the same status:
- Casuarina cunninghamiana is recorded as Naturalized non-invasive (NN).
- Allocasuarina verticillata is recorded as status to be clarified.
- Casuarina equisetifolia is recorded as status to be clarified.
The category “uncertain status” means that more information is required to determine whether the plants are only cultivated, casual escapes or have formed self-sustaining populations.
General characteristics
The members of Casuarinaceae are evergreen trees or shrubs. The trunk may be solitary or branch low down, while the bark may be smooth, fissured, furrowed or corky, depending on the species and age.
The green photosynthetic branchlets are slender, flexible, jointed and conspicuously grooved. They consist of successive segments separated by nodes.
The true leaves are extremely reduced and appear as small triangular scales around each node. They are arranged in whorls of approximately 4 to 18 leaves and are united at the base, forming a small toothed sheath around the branchlet.
The number, size and form of the leaf teeth at each node constitute important taxonomic characters for distinguishing the species.
Photosynthesis is carried out mainly by the green branchlets rather than the highly reduced leaves. This morphology greatly reduces the surface area from which water is lost.
The flowers are unisexual and extremely small. The plants may be monoecious, with male and female flowers on the same tree, or dioecious, with the two sexes on separate individuals.
The male flowers form elongated spikes at the tips of the branchlets. Each flower is very simple and usually possesses one stamen.
The female flowers are arranged in small spherical or ovoid heads. Following fertilization, the bracts and bracteoles become woody and form a characteristic cone-like multiple-fruit structure.
These structures resemble small conifer cones, but they are woody infructescences of flowering plants. They contain numerous small, one-seeded and winged fruits.
Pollination and dispersal
Pollination is carried out mainly by wind. The male flowers produce large quantities of lightweight pollen, which is transported towards the female flowers.
Mature woody infructescences open gradually and release small, flattened and winged fruits. This dispersal unit is frequently described as a samaroid nut.
The fruits are transported mainly by wind. They can also be moved by water, rain, surface runoff, soil and human activities.
The production of numerous lightweight fruits allows certain species to spread considerable distances from planted trees.
Symbiosis with Frankia bacteria
One of the most important ecological characteristics of the family is its capacity to form symbiotic root nodules with actinobacteria of the genus Frankia.
The bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen and convert it into forms that can be used by the plant. In exchange, they receive carbohydrates and a protected space within the root nodules.
This symbiosis enables casuarinas to grow in nutrient-poor, sandy, degraded or relatively infertile soils. At the same time, it may gradually increase the quantity of nitrogen in the soil and alter the ecological conditions of the area.
In locations where the species are alien, a change in nitrogen availability may favour other nitrogen-loving plants and affect native plant communities adapted to nutrient-poor soils.
Casuarinaceae in Cyprus
No native member of the family is recorded in Cyprus. The species were introduced mainly for:
- Windbreaks.
- Shade.
- Roadside tree lines.
- Parks and gardens.
- Soil stabilization.
- Reforestation and planting in degraded areas.
- Protection of fields and roads from wind.
- Ornamental use.
Casuarinas tolerate drought, wind, heat and, depending on the species, salinity. These characteristics made them popular for planting in dry and coastal regions.
Their use should be accompanied by monitoring because certain Casuarinaceae species have become invasive in other parts of the world.

The genus Casuarina
The name Casuarina is derived from the Malay word kasuari, meaning cassowary. The slender hanging branchlets were considered to resemble the long, fine feathers of this large bird of New Guinea and Australia.
The genus includes evergreen trees naturally distributed from Australia and southeastern Asia to the islands of the western Pacific.
Certain species have been widely transported throughout tropical and subtropical regions as windbreaks, shade trees, sources of firewood and plants for stabilizing sandy soils.
Description of Casuarina cunninghamiana
Casuarina cunninghamiana, known in English as river she-oak or river oak, is a tall evergreen tree native to eastern Australia.
It can develop a tall, relatively straight trunk and a narrow or irregular crown. The branchlets are slender, green, jointed and drooping.
The true leaves are minute and form whorls around the nodes. The male flowers develop in elongated terminal spikes, while the female inflorescences are small and nearly spherical.
The mature woody infructescences are relatively small and contain numerous winged fruits.
Within its natural range, it frequently grows along rivers and watercourses. It tolerates periodic flooding, but established trees can also survive in relatively dry conditions.
In Cyprus, it is recorded as Naturalized non-invasive (NN). This means that it can reproduce without human care but has not been classified as invasive on the basis of available Cypriot information.
Description of Casuarina equisetifolia
Casuarina equisetifolia, known as coastal she-oak, Australian pine or beach she-oak, is an evergreen tree native to India, southeastern Asia, Australia and many islands of the western Pacific.
The epithet equisetifolia means “with leaves resembling Equisetum” and refers to the jointed, slender and grooved branchlets.
The species is particularly adapted to coastal conditions. It tolerates strong wind, salt spray, sand and nutrient-poor soils. For this reason, it has been widely planted along coasts and on dunes.
It develops a tall trunk and a relatively open crown. The drooping green branchlets perform most of the photosynthesis.
The infructescences are small, woody and almost spherical or ovoid. The numerous winged fruits are readily dispersed by wind.
In several countries, the species has become a serious invasive plant of coastal ecosystems. In Cyprus, however, its status is recorded as uncertain and to be clarified. It should therefore not be presented as demonstrably naturalized or invasive on the island without newer evidence.
The genus Allocasuarina
The genus Allocasuarina includes approximately 60 species and is naturally restricted to Australia. Most species are trees or shrubs of dry, Mediterranean-type or temperate habitats.
It was taxonomically separated from Casuarina on the basis of characteristics of the male flowers, female inflorescences, fruits, branchlets and leaf whorls.
Many species are dioecious, with male and female flowers developing on separate plants.
Description of Allocasuarina verticillata
Allocasuarina verticillata, known as drooping she-oak, is an evergreen tree naturally distributed in southeastern Australia and Tasmania.
It generally develops into a relatively low or medium-sized tree with rough, furrowed bark and slender drooping branchlets.
The leaves are minute, scale-like and arranged in whorls. The male flowers develop in elongated spikes, and the female inflorescences develop into small woody infructescences.
It tolerates wind, drought and relatively nutrient-poor soils. It has been cultivated outside Australia as an ornamental, windbreak and tree for degraded sites.
In Cyprus, it is recorded in the category of uncertain status. More observations and documented collections are required to determine whether it occurs only in cultivation or escapes and reproduces without human care.
Distinguishing the Cypriot taxa
The identification of Casuarinaceae species should not be based only on the general appearance of the tree. It requires examination of characteristics such as:
- The number of leaf teeth at each node.
- The length and thickness of the branchlet segments.
- The form and density of the grooves.
- The length of the male flowering spikes.
- The size and shape of the woody infructescences.
- The form of the bracts and bracteoles.
- The arrangement of the teeth on the node sheaths.
- The presence of male and female flowers on the same or separate trees.
- The bark and overall form of the crown.
The examination of mature reproductive structures is frequently necessary for reliable identification.
Habitats in Cyprus
The introduced species may be planted or occur in:
- Parks and public gardens.
- Roadside tree lines.
- Fields and windbreaks.
- Coastal areas.
- Dunes and sandy soils.
- Riverbeds and streambeds.
- Irrigation channels.
- Degraded and disturbed land.
- Old reforestation sites.
- Sites where plant material is discarded.
- Settlement margins and industrial areas.
Natural regeneration is more likely in open soils, areas with reduced competition and locations where moisture is available.
Ecology
Casuarinas are wind-pollinated and do not depend on insects for pollination. The winged fruits are also dispersed mainly by wind.
Their crowns provide resting and nesting sites for birds. The woody infructescences, bark and slender branchlets are used by various invertebrates.
The dense layer of fallen branchlets beneath mature trees can shade the soil and hinder the germination of small herbaceous plants. At the same time, its decomposition adds organic matter and nitrogen to the soil.
This effect may be beneficial in completely degraded human-made sites but undesirable in natural habitats with specialized native vegetation.
Adaptations
The most important adaptations of the family include:
- Highly reduced scale-like leaves.
- Green photosynthetic branchlets.
- A thick epidermal covering.
- Small leaf surface area and reduced water loss.
- A strong and deep root system.
- Symbiotic nitrogen fixation with Frankia bacteria.
- Tolerance of nutrient-poor and degraded soils.
- Tolerance of strong wind.
- Production of numerous winged fruits.
- Wind pollination and dispersal.
- Tolerance of salt spray in coastal species.
- Capacity for rapid establishment in open ground.
Economic and practical importance
The members of Casuarinaceae are used worldwide for:
- Windbreaks.
- Production of firewood and charcoal.
- Timber.
- Protection of coasts and dunes.
- Erosion control.
- Slope stabilization.
- Restoration of degraded soils.
- Shade and ornamental planting.
- Improvement of soil nitrogen.
- Production of poles and fencing materials.
The wood is generally heavy, hard and suitable for burning. The roots can stabilize soil, but planting very close to buildings, roads or infrastructure requires careful planning.
Potential ecological impacts
Where they become naturalized or invasive, the species may cause:
- Formation of dense stands.
- Shading and restriction of native low vegetation.
- Changes in soil nitrogen levels.
- Alteration of plant-community composition.
- Accumulation of a dense layer of dry branchlets.
- An increase in available fuel material.
- Alteration of coastal and riparian habitats.
- Changes in sand movement on dunes.
- Competition with native trees and shrubs.
- Increased water use in certain locations.
These impacts have been recorded internationally for different species and regions. They should not automatically be attributed to Cypriot populations without local documentation.
Monitoring and management in Cyprus
Monitoring should include:
- Accurate identification of planted and self-sown trees.
- Mapping young plants outside cultivation.
- Surveying natural and semi-natural habitats around old plantings.
- Collecting mature branchlets and infructescences for reliable identification.
- Confirming whether viable seeds are produced.
- Distinguishing between cultivated, casual and naturalized plants.
- Monitoring Casuarina cunninghamiana despite its present non-invasive status.
- Clarifying the status of Allocasuarina verticillata and Casuarina equisetifolia.
- Avoiding new plantings of potentially invasive species near important wetlands, dunes and natural coasts.
- Promptly removing young plants when they occur in sensitive habitats.
- Avoiding the unjustified felling of old trees of cultural, historical or practical value without prior assessment.
