Η οικογένεια Juglandaceae, γνωστή στα αγγλικά ως walnut family, είναι οικογένεια ξυλωδών ανθοφόρων φυτών που ανήκει στην τάξη Fagales. Περιλαμβάνει φυλλοβόλα κυρίως δέντρα και σπανιότερα θάμνους, αρκετά από τα οποία έχουν μεγάλη οικολογική, διατροφική και οικονομική σημασία.

Σύμφωνα με τον οργανωμένο κατάλογο της κυπριακής χλωρίδας, η οικογένεια Juglandaceae αντιπροσωπεύεται στην Κύπρο από 2 γένη και 2 taxa. Από αυτά, 1 είναι ιθαγενές μη ενδημικό και 1 είναι ξενικό ή εγκλιματισμένο. Δεν καταγράφονται ενδημικά taxa της Κύπρου, υβρίδια ή taxa αβέβαιου καθεστώτος.

Μορφολογία

Τα μέλη της οικογένειας Juglandaceae είναι συνήθως φυλλοβόλα, μόνοικα δέντρα. Τα φύλλα είναι εναλλασσόμενα, συνήθως μεγάλα και πτεροειδώς σύνθετα, με αρωματικές ουσίες που γίνονται αισθητές όταν τριφτούν ή συνθλιβούν.

Τα άνθη είναι μικρά, μονογενή και ανεμόφιλα. Τα αρσενικά άνθη σχηματίζουν συνήθως μακριούς, κρεμαστούς ίουλους, ενώ τα θηλυκά εμφανίζονται μεμονωμένα ή σε μικρές ομάδες. Τα φυτά δεν βασίζονται σε έντονα χρώματα ή άρωμα για την επικονίαση, καθώς η γύρη μεταφέρεται κυρίως με τον άνεμο.

Ο καρπός περιβάλλεται από σαρκώδες ή δερματώδες εξωτερικό περίβλημα και διαθέτει σκληρό εσωτερικό κέλυφος. Στο εσωτερικό βρίσκεται το μεγάλο, πλούσιο σε έλαια σπέρμα. Χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα αποτελούν το καρύδι της κοινής καρυδιάς και το πεκάν.

Εξάπλωση και βιότοποι στην Κύπρο

Στην Κύπρο η οικογένεια αντιπροσωπεύεται από την κοινή καρυδιά, Juglans regia, και το πεκάν, Carya illinoinensis. Πρόκειται για μεγάλα φυλλοβόλα δέντρα τα οποία συνδέονται κυρίως με καλλιεργημένες εκτάσεις, περιβόλια, κήπους, αγροτικές περιοχές και θέσεις κοντά σε χωριά.

Η καρυδιά ευνοείται από βαθιά, γόνιμα εδάφη και θέσεις με επαρκή εδαφική υγρασία. Συναντάται συχνότερα σε ημιορεινές και ορεινές περιοχές, κοντά σε κοιλάδες, ρυάκια, πηγές, παλαιούς κήπους και εγκαταλειμμένες καλλιέργειες.

Το πεκάν είναι δέντρο βορειοαμερικανικής προέλευσης που καλλιεργείται για τους εδώδιμους καρπούς του. Στην Κύπρο καταγράφεται ως ξενικό ή εγκλιματισμένο taxon και μπορεί να επιβιώνει πέρα από τις αρχικές θέσεις καλλιέργειάς του, ιδιαίτερα σε περιοχές με διαθέσιμη υγρασία.

Οικολογική και ανθρώπινη σημασία

Τα μεγάλα δέντρα της οικογένειας προσφέρουν σκιά και δημιουργούν καταφύγια για πουλιά, έντομα και άλλους οργανισμούς. Οι καρποί τους καταναλώνονται από διάφορα ζώα, ενώ τα ώριμα δέντρα μπορούν να παρέχουν θέσεις ανάπαυσης, φωλιάσματος και τροφοληψίας.

Η Juglans regia καλλιεργείται από την αρχαιότητα για τα καρύδια και την πολύτιμη ξυλεία της. Το ξύλο της χρησιμοποιείται στην επιπλοποιία και στην ξυλογλυπτική, ενώ οι καρποί της αποτελούν σημαντική τροφή, πλούσια σε έλαια.

Η Carya illinoinensis καλλιεργείται για τα πεκάν, τα οποία χρησιμοποιούνται στη μαγειρική και τη ζαχαροπλαστική. Η παρουσία της στην κυπριακή χλωρίδα συνδέεται με την εισαγωγή και καλλιέργειά της από τον άνθρωπο.

Απειλές και προστασία

Τα taxa της οικογένειας δεν περιορίζονται αποκλειστικά σε αδιατάρακτους φυσικούς οικοτόπους, καθώς συνδέονται σε μεγάλο βαθμό με παραδοσιακές καλλιέργειες και αγροτικά τοπία. Ωστόσο, παλαιά δέντρα και πληθυσμοί που επιβιώνουν σε εγκαταλειμμένα περιβόλια μπορούν να χαθούν εξαιτίας της εκχέρσωσης, της εγκατάλειψης της παραδοσιακής γεωργίας, της οικιστικής ανάπτυξης, των πυρκαγιών και της παρατεταμένης ξηρασίας.

Η διατήρηση ώριμων δέντρων σε αγροτικές και ημιορεινές περιοχές συμβάλλει στη διατήρηση της τοπικής βιοποικιλότητας και του παραδοσιακού χαρακτήρα του κυπριακού τοπίου. Παράλληλα, η εξάπλωση ξενικών ειδών πρέπει να παρακολουθείται ώστε να εντοπίζονται έγκαιρα πιθανές επιδράσεις στη φυσική βλάστηση.

The family Juglandaceae, commonly known as the walnut family, is a family of woody flowering plants belonging to the order Fagales. It consists mainly of deciduous trees and, less frequently, shrubs, many of which have considerable ecological, nutritional and economic importance.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Juglandaceae is represented in Cyprus by 2 genera and 2 taxa. Of these, 1 is native non-endemic and 1 is alien or naturalized. No endemic taxa of Cyprus, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.

Morphology

Members of the Juglandaceae are usually deciduous, monoecious trees. Their leaves are alternate, generally large and pinnately compound, with aromatic substances that become noticeable when the leaves are rubbed or crushed.

The flowers are small, unisexual and wind-pollinated. The male flowers usually form long, pendulous catkins, while the female flowers occur individually or in small groups. The plants do not depend on bright colours or fragrance for pollination because their pollen is transported mainly by the wind.

The fruit is enclosed within a fleshy or leathery outer covering and has a hard inner shell. Inside it is a large seed rich in oils. Characteristic examples are the walnut of the common walnut tree and the pecan.

Distribution and habitats in Cyprus

In Cyprus, the family is represented by the common walnut, Juglans regia, and the pecan, Carya illinoinensis. These are large deciduous trees associated mainly with cultivated land, orchards, gardens, rural areas and locations near villages.

The walnut favours deep, fertile soils and places with adequate soil moisture. It is encountered more frequently in submontane and montane areas, near valleys, streams, springs, old gardens and abandoned cultivated land.

The pecan is a tree of North American origin cultivated for its edible nuts. In Cyprus, it is recorded as an alien or naturalized taxon and may survive beyond its original places of cultivation, particularly in areas where sufficient moisture is available.

Ecological and human importance

The large trees of the family provide shade and create shelter for birds, insects and other organisms. Their fruits are consumed by various animals, while mature trees may provide resting, nesting and feeding sites.

Juglans regia has been cultivated since ancient times for its walnuts and valuable timber. Its wood is used in furniture making and woodcarving, while its fruits are an important food rich in oils.

Carya illinoinensis is cultivated for pecans, which are used in cooking and confectionery. Its presence in the Cypriot flora is associated with its introduction and cultivation by humans.

Threats and protection

The taxa of the family are not restricted exclusively to undisturbed natural habitats, as they are largely associated with traditional cultivation and rural landscapes. Nevertheless, old trees and populations surviving in abandoned orchards may be lost through land clearance, the abandonment of traditional agriculture, residential development, fires and prolonged drought.

The preservation of mature trees in rural and submontane areas contributes to the conservation of local biodiversity and the traditional character of the Cypriot landscape. At the same time, the spread of alien species should be monitored so that any potential effects on natural vegetation can be detected promptly.
