The family Iridaceae, commonly known as the iris family, is a family of monocotyledonous flowering plants belonging to the order Asparagales. It consists mainly of perennial herbs with underground storage organs, such as rhizomes, corms or bulbs.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Iridaceae is represented in Cyprus by 5 genera and 11 taxa. Of these, 5 are native non-endemic, 4 are endemic to Cyprus and 2 are alien or naturalized. No hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
Morphology
Members of the family are usually geophytes that survive the unfavourable season through underground corms, rhizomes or bulbs. Their leaves are simple and entire, generally narrow, linear or sword-shaped, and frequently develop near the base of the plant.
The flowers may be solitary or arranged in inflorescences. They are usually conspicuous and bisexual and consist of six petaloid perianth segments arranged in two whorls. They possess three stamens and an inferior ovary, which is generally divided into three chambers. The fruit is usually a capsule containing numerous seeds.
Distribution and habitats in Cyprus
Species of Iridaceae occur in a variety of habitats in Cyprus, ranging from phrygana, scrubland, grassland and cultivated or disturbed ground to rocky slopes, woodland clearings and mountainous areas.
Species of Crocus are characteristic seasonal geophytes, and the endemic species are associated mainly with montane or submontane habitats. Species of Gladiolus, Moraea and Romulea occur primarily in open, sunny places. The two alien species of Iris are associated with cultivation and may survive or spread near inhabited areas, gardens, roads and old settlements.

Ecological importance
Plants of the Iridaceae constitute an important component of the seasonal flora of Cyprus. Many flower during autumn, winter or early spring, taking advantage of the period when moisture is available in the soil.
Their flowers provide pollen and nectar for various insects. These geophytes also contribute to the plant diversity of grasslands, scrublands, woodland clearings and rocky habitats. The four endemic taxa are of particular importance because their natural distribution is restricted to Cyprus.
Threats and protection
The main potential pressures affecting members of the family include the destruction or alteration of natural habitats, residential and tourist development, road construction, changes in agricultural practices, overgrazing, fires and the illegal collection of conspicuous flowering plants or their underground organs.
The conservation of natural populations and their habitats is especially important for endemic and locally restricted species. Photographing the plants without uprooting or collecting them is the appropriate way to observe them in the wild.
