- Hypericum – 8 taxa

The family Hypericaceae, commonly known as the St John’s-wort family, is a family of angiosperms belonging to the order Malpighiales. It includes annual and perennial herbs, subshrubs, shrubs and, in other parts of the world, small trees.
The most important and largest genus of the family is Hypericum. All wild members of the family recorded in Cyprus belong to this genus.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Hypericaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 8 taxa:
- Hypericum – 8 taxa
According to their status, the checklist records:
- 7 indigenous non-endemic taxa
- 1 endemic species of Cyprus
- no alien or naturalized taxa
- no hybrids
- no taxa of uncertain status
Morphology
Species of Hypericum are annual or perennial herbs and low subshrubs. Their stems may be erect, ascending or creeping and frequently bear two or more longitudinal ridges.
The leaves are simple, generally opposite and without stipules. They may be sessile or have a very short petiole. Their shape varies from linear and lanceolate to ovate or almost rounded.
Many species have small glands in their leaves and other organs. Translucent glands appear as minute bright dots when a leaf is held against the light. Dark glands contain pigments and other chemical compounds.
The flowers are generally yellow, radially symmetrical and bisexual. They usually consist of five sepals and five free petals. The numerous stamens form conspicuous groups around the ovary.
The fruit is generally a capsule that opens at maturity and releases numerous small seeds.
Distribution and habitats
The family Hypericaceae has a very broad global distribution. The genus Hypericum occurs in temperate, Mediterranean, tropical and mountain regions.
In Cyprus, its species grow in:
- pine forests and woodland clearings,
- mountain grasslands,
- phrygana and open shrublands,
- rocky slopes and crevices,
- igneous and limestone substrates,
- stream banks and damp ravines,
- springs and seasonally wet soils,
- roadsides and path margins,
- fields and other open habitats.
Some species prefer dry and stony habitats, while others depend on relatively cool or moist microhabitats.
Indigenous non-endemic taxa
Hypericum
866. Hypericum confertum subsp. stenobotrys (Boiss.) Holmboe · Subspecies · Indigenous, non-endemic
A perennial herb of the higher parts of the Troodos range. It has erect stems, opposite leaves and yellow flowers grouped in relatively narrow inflorescences.
In Cyprus it is recorded at elevations of approximately 1,225–1,950 metres. It grows in mountain grasslands, open woodland, rocky slopes and clearings.
Its dependence on high elevations makes it sensitive to changes in the mountain climate and prolonged periods of drought.
867. Hypericum empetrifolium Willd. · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic
An evergreen or semi-evergreen low subshrub with numerous slender stems. Its leaves are very small and narrow and frequently form whorls around the stem.
The yellow flowers develop at the stem tips. It grows on dry rocky slopes, in rock crevices, phrygana and open woodland habitats.
Its small leaves and low woody growth are adaptations to dry Mediterranean conditions.
868. Hypericum hircinum L. · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic
A perennial subshrub or shrub with erect, branched stems and relatively large opposite leaves. Its flowers are large and yellow, with numerous long stamens.
When rubbed, the leaves or stems may release a strong characteristic scent. The name hircinum refers to this odour, which has been compared to that of a male goat.
It grows mainly in cool and relatively damp habitats near springs and streams, in ravines and on shaded slopes.
869. Hypericum lanuginosum Lam. · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic
A perennial herb or low subshrub characterized by conspicuous soft hairs on its stems and leaves. The name lanuginosum refers to the plant’s woolly appearance.
The flowers are yellow and develop at the stem tips. It occurs on rocky slopes, in rock crevices, open shrublands and woodland margins.
Its hairs help reduce water loss and protect the plant’s surface from intense solar radiation.
870. Hypericum perfoliatum L. · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic
A perennial herb with erect stems and opposite leaves that clasp the stem at their bases. The name perfoliatum refers to this characteristic.
The flowers are yellow and borne in terminal inflorescences. It grows in seasonally wet habitats, along stream margins, in damp grasslands and cool depressions.
It is rare in Cyprus. In the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus, it is classified as Endangered (EN) under criterion D1.
871. Hypericum perforatum subsp. veronense (Schrank) H. Lindb. · Subspecies · Indigenous, non-endemic
A perennial herb with erect, branched stems and opposite leaves. When the leaves are held against the light, their numerous translucent glands resemble minute perforations. The name perforatum refers to this characteristic.
The petals are yellow and may bear small black glandular dots, especially along their margins. When the flowers or fruits are crushed, they may release a reddish pigment.
In Cyprus it is recorded at elevations of approximately 600–1,525 metres. It grows in open woodland, clearings, grasslands, along roadsides and on relatively damp soils.
Hypericum perforatum is internationally known as St John’s wort and is used in herbal preparations. However, it may interact seriously with many medicines and should not be used therapeutically without appropriate medical or pharmaceutical guidance.
872. Hypericum triquetrifolium Turra · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic
A perennial or short-lived herb with numerous branched stems. The stems bear conspicuous longitudinal ridges, while the leaves are small, opposite and generally triangular to ovate.
The yellow flowers are borne in branched inflorescences. It occurs in dry open habitats, fields, phrygana, roadsides and stony ground.
It is adapted to summer drought and may grow in degraded or disturbed habitats.
Endemic taxa of Cyprus
Hypericum
1590. Hypericum repens L. · Species · Endemic to Cyprus
Hypericum repens is a perennial herb endemic exclusively to Cyprus. It has slender, spreading or creeping stems, a characteristic reflected in the name repens.
The leaves are opposite, small and sessile or nearly sessile. The flowers are yellow and develop singly or in small groups at the tips of the ascending stems.
In Cyprus it is recorded from sea level to approximately 1,475 metres and flowers mainly from May to July.
It grows on rocky slopes, open ground, in rock crevices, woodland clearings and other suitable natural habitats.
Although it has a relatively broad altitudinal range, its entire global distribution is restricted to Cyprus. Conservation of its Cypriot populations is therefore a global responsibility.
Alien, hybrid and uncertain-status taxa
The organized checklist of the Cypriot flora records no:
- alien or naturalized taxa,
- hybrids,
- taxa of uncertain status
within the family Hypericaceae.
Glands and chemical defence
The translucent and dark glands of Hypericum species produce and store various chemical compounds.
These substances may protect the plants from herbivores, pathogens and intense ultraviolet radiation. At the same time, some may be toxic to animals or cause photosensitivity when consumed in large quantities.
The presence of pharmacologically active compounds does not mean that every species is safe for human use. Their chemical composition and the concentration of individual substances differ between species and growing periods.
Ecological importance
The yellow flowers of Hypericaceae attract bees, flies, beetles and other insects that mainly collect pollen. Their numerous stamens provide a rich source of pollen.
Perennial and woody species help retain soil on rocky slopes. Their low-growing stands create microhabitats and provide cover for small invertebrates.
Species of damp habitats form part of the specialized vegetation of springs, streams and seasonally wet grasslands.
Threats and protection
Potential threats affecting Cypriot Hypericaceae include:
- destruction or alteration of natural habitats,
- extraction and diversion of water from springs and streams,
- drainage of seasonally wet sites,
- wildfires,
- road construction and earthworks,
- quarrying and mining activities,
- clearance of natural vegetation,
- excessive grazing or trampling,
- uncontrolled collection of plant material,
- prolonged drought and climate change.
Particular priority should be given to protecting the rare Hypericum perfoliatum and preserving all natural populations of the endemic Hypericum repens.
For species of wet habitats, protection must include not only the sites where the plants grow but also the natural supply and quality of the water.
