  • Erodium – 9 taxa
  • Geranium – 8 taxa

Text by George Konstantinou

The family Geraniaceae, commonly known as the geranium family, is a family of angiosperms belonging to the order Geraniales. It mainly comprises annual and perennial herbs, together with some subshrubs and shrubs.

A characteristic feature of the family is its elongated fruit, which resembles a bird’s bill. This structure is the origin of the English names cranesbill for the genus Geranium and stork’s-bill for the genus Erodium.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Geraniaceae is represented in Cyprus by 2 genera and 17 taxa:

  • Erodium – 9 taxa
  • Geranium – 8 taxa

All 17 taxa are recorded as indigenous and non-endemic.

Morphology

The Cypriot species are mainly annual or perennial herbs. Their stems may be erect, ascending or spreading and are frequently covered with simple or glandular hairs.

The leaves are alternate or opposite and usually bear stipules at the base of the petiole. They may be palmately lobed, deeply divided or pinnatifid.

The flowers are bisexual and generally five-parted, with five sepals and five free petals. Their colour ranges from white and pale pink to deep pink, purple or violet.

In the genus Geranium, there are generally ten fertile stamens. In Erodium, there are five fertile stamens and five sterile staminodes.

The ovary consists of five fused carpels. At maturity, the fruit divides into five single-seeded mericarps, each attached to a long awn.

Seed dispersal

The long fruit awns are hygroscopic and respond to changes in moisture.

In Erodium, each mericarp’s awn coils into a spiral as it dries and uncoils when it becomes moist. Repeated movements can carry the seed over the ground and help it enter cracks or penetrate the soil.

This specialized method of self-dispersal increases the probability that the seed will reach a protected location suitable for germination.

Distribution and habitats

The family Geraniaceae has an almost worldwide distribution, with high diversity in temperate and Mediterranean regions.

In Cyprus, its species occur in:

  • cultivated and abandoned fields,
  • fallow land and grasslands,
  • phrygana and open shrublands,
  • sandy and rocky coasts,
  • rocky slopes and crevices,
  • pine forests and woodland clearings,
  • shaded and seasonally damp habitats,
  • roadsides and path margins,
  • gardens and other disturbed ground.

Many species are annuals that emerge after the winter rains. They flower mainly from late winter to spring and complete their life cycles before the summer drought.

Endemic, alien, hybrid and uncertain-status taxa

The organized checklist of the Cypriot flora records no:

  • endemic taxa of Cyprus,
  • alien or naturalized taxa,
  • hybrids,
  • taxa of uncertain status

within the family Geraniaceae.

Ecological importance

Geraniaceae flowers provide pollen and nectar for small bees, flies and other insects. Their annual species form an important part of the spring vegetation of fields, grasslands and open shrublands.

The hygroscopic movement of their fruits is a specialized adaptation permitting effective seed dispersal and establishment without complete dependence on animals or wind.

Species growing on disturbed soils rapidly cover bare surfaces and contribute to seasonal vegetation cover and retention of the surface soil.

Threats and protection

Most Cypriot Geraniaceae have relatively broad ecological tolerances. Nevertheless, local populations of some species may be affected by:

  • intensive herbicide use,
  • destruction of fallow land and grasslands,
  • conversion of traditional cultivated areas,
  • residential and tourism development,
  • destruction of sandy coastal habitats,
  • premature and repeated cutting of vegetation,
  • earthworks,
  • excessive trampling,
  • prolonged drought and climate change.

Particular attention should be given to species with restricted or local records, such as Erodium touchyanum, because the destruction of a small locality may affect a significant proportion of their known Cypriot occurrence.
