  • Blackstonia – 3 taxa
  • Centaurium – 7 taxa
  • Schenkia – 1 taxon

Text by George Konstantinou

The family Gentianaceae, commonly known as the gentian family, is a large family of angiosperms belonging to the order Gentianales. It mainly comprises herbaceous plants, although shrubs, small trees and climbing species also occur globally.

Many members of the family are known for the strongly bitter chemical compounds contained in their tissues. The Cypriot members are small annual or biennial herbs with yellow or pink flowers.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Gentianaceae is represented in Cyprus by 3 genera and 11 taxa:

  • Blackstonia – 3 taxa
  • Centaurium – 7 taxa
  • Schenkia – 1 taxon

All 11 taxa are recorded as indigenous and non-endemic.

Morphology

The Cypriot members of the family are mainly small, erect or branched annual herbs. Some initially form a basal rosette of leaves and later develop a flowering stem.

The leaves are simple, entire and generally opposite. They are frequently sessile, and the two opposite leaves may be joined at their bases around the stem. Stipules are absent.

The flowers are generally radially symmetrical and bisexual. The calyx consists of fused sepals, while the corolla usually has four or five lobes and forms a tube at its base.

In the genus Blackstonia, the flowers are yellow, while in Centaurium and Schenkia they are mainly pink or purplish-pink.

The stamens are attached to the corolla tube. The fruit is generally an elongated capsule containing numerous very small seeds.

Behaviour of the flowers

The flowers of many Centaurium species open more fully under suitable light and temperature conditions. During cloudy, cool or wet weather, they may remain partially or completely closed.

This behaviour protects the reproductive organs and pollen from unfavourable weather conditions. The flowers are visited by small bees, flies and other insects.

Distribution and habitats

The family Gentianaceae has a worldwide distribution, occurring from tropical regions to temperate and alpine ecosystems.

In Cyprus, its species grow in a broad range of open habitats:

  • seasonally wet grasslands,
  • margins of streams and wetlands,
  • temporary pools and damp depressions,
  • saline and brackish habitats,
  • coastal grasslands,
  • phrygana and open shrublands,
  • pine forests and clearings,
  • serpentine and other metal-rich soils,
  • fields and fallow land,
  • roadsides and path margins.

Many species depend on seasonal moisture. They germinate following the winter rains, flower during spring or early summer and complete their life cycles before the soil dries completely.

Indigenous non-endemic taxa

Blackstonia

The genus Blackstonia comprises small annual herbs known in English as yellow-worts. They are characterized by their bright yellow flowers and opposite leaves, which are frequently joined at their bases.

838. Blackstonia acuminata (W. D. J. Koch & Ziz) Domin subsp. acuminata · Subspecies · Indigenous, non-endemic

A small annual plant with an erect and generally branched stem. Its yellow flowers are borne in loose inflorescences and have a narrow tube and conspicuous lobes.

It grows on seasonally wet or damp soils, in open grasslands, along stream margins and in other habitats that retain moisture during its growing period.

839. Blackstonia acuminata subsp. aestiva (K. Malý) Zeltner · Subspecies · Indigenous, non-endemic

An annual taxon resembling the nominal subspecies, from which it is distinguished by a combination of characteristics involving the inflorescence, calyx, corolla and growing period.

It occurs mainly in open, seasonally wet habitats and completes its life cycle as the soil dries.

840. Blackstonia perfoliata subsp. intermedia (Ten.) Zeltner · Subspecies · Indigenous, non-endemic

An annual herb with an erect stem and opposite leaves, which are joined at their bases and give the impression that the stem passes through the leaf. The yellow flowers are borne in branched inflorescences.

It occurs in damp grasslands, open ground, shrubland margins and other seasonally wet habitats.

Centaurium

Species of Centaurium, commonly known as centauries, are small annual or biennial herbs. Their flowers are generally pink, with a long tube and four or five lobes.

Accurate identification of the species and subspecies frequently requires examination of their branching pattern, leaf shape, inflorescence structure, calyx and corolla length, and anther characteristics.

841. Centaurium erythraea subsp. rhodense (Boiss. & Reut.) Melderis · Subspecies · Indigenous, non-endemic

An erect annual or biennial herb with a basal rosette and a branched flowering inflorescence. The flowers are pink and grouped in relatively dense, flat-topped clusters.

It grows in clearings, open shrublands, woodland margins, grasslands and seasonally damp soils.

842. Centaurium mairei Zeltner · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic

A small annual species with pink flowers. In Cyprus, it flowers mainly during April and May.

It occurs in open habitats with seasonal moisture and may form small, scattered populations.

843. Centaurium maritimum (L.) Fritsch · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic

A small annual plant which, despite its placement in the genus Centaurium, is distinguished by its characteristic yellow flowers.

It grows in open grasslands, on sandy or stony soils and in habitats that are wet during winter and spring but dry out later.

844. Centaurium pulchellum (Sw.) Hayek ex Hand.-Mazz. & al. subsp. pulchellum · Subspecies · Indigenous, non-endemic

A small, slender and usually strongly branched annual plant. It often lacks a conspicuous basal rosette. The small pink flowers are borne in a loose, open inflorescence.

It occurs on wet or periodically wet soils, along the margins of pools and streams, in ditches and other open habitats.

845. Centaurium serpentinicola Carlström · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic

A small annual species particularly associated with serpentine and other ultrabasic soils. These substrates are characterized by an unusual chemical composition, low availability of certain nutrients and elevated concentrations of metals.

The plant is adapted to these difficult soil conditions. It bears small pink flowers and, in Cyprus, flowers mainly from April onwards.

Despite its scientific name and specialized ecology, it is recorded in the organized checklist as indigenous and non-endemic, rather than endemic to Cyprus.

846. Centaurium tenuiflorum subsp. acutiflorum (Schott) Zeltner · Subspecies · Indigenous, non-endemic

A slender annual with narrow leaves and small pink flowers borne in a branched inflorescence. It is frequently associated with wet, saline or brackish habitats.

847. Centaurium tenuiflorum (Hoffmanns. & Link) Fritsch subsp. tenuiflorum · Subspecies · Indigenous, non-endemic

A small annual plant with erect, slender stems and small pink flowers. It occurs in seasonally wet grasslands, coastal wet habitats, saline soils and wetland margins.

The two subspecies of Centaurium tenuiflorum are distinguished by subtle morphological characteristics, and reliable identification requires the examination of mature flowering plants.

Schenkia

848. Schenkia spicata (L.) G. Mans. · Species · Indigenous, non-endemic

An annual herb with an erect stem and numerous small pink flowers forming an elongated, narrow and frequently spike-like inflorescence.

It grows mainly in coastal grasslands, saline or brackish habitats, along salt-lake margins and on seasonally wet soils.

The species was formerly placed within the more broadly defined genus Centaurium. Modern phylogenetic and taxonomic research led to the recognition of the genus Schenkia, the treatment followed by the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora.

Endemic, alien, hybrid and uncertain-status taxa

The organized checklist of the Cypriot flora records no:

  • endemic taxa of Cyprus,
  • alien or naturalized taxa,
  • hybrids,
  • taxa of uncertain status

within the family Gentianaceae.

Ecological importance

The Cypriot Gentianaceae form part of the specialized spring vegetation of seasonally wet and open habitats.

Their flowers provide pollen and nectar for small insects. Because many species are small and have short life cycles, they can exploit temporarily available microhabitats between larger plants.

Species of wet and saline habitats contribute to the botanical diversity of coastal wetlands and temporary pools. Centaurium serpentinicola is a characteristic example of a plant adapted to the unusual conditions of serpentine soils.

Threats and protection

The principal potential threats affecting Gentianaceae habitats in Cyprus include:

  • drainage of seasonal wetlands,
  • alteration of natural hydrology,
  • infilling of wet depressions and saline habitats,
  • residential and tourism development,
  • intensive agriculture,
  • herbicide use,
  • premature or excessively frequent cutting of vegetation,
  • excessive trampling,
  • road construction and earthworks,
  • mining or quarrying activity on serpentine soils,
  • prolonged drought and climate change.

Because many species are small annual plants, they may not be visible during dry years and may reappear when rainfall creates suitable conditions.

Monitoring should therefore be conducted during the appropriate season and over more than one year. Protection should cover the entire habitat and its soil seed bank, rather than only the visible flowering plants.
