Text by George Konstantinou
The family Juncaginaceae, commonly known as the arrowgrass family, is a small family of monocotyledonous flowering plants belonging to the order Alismatales. It consists mainly of wetland herbs adapted to freshwater, brackish or saline soils.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Juncaginaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon. This is the native non-endemic species Triglochin barrelieri Loisel. No taxa endemic to Cyprus, alien/naturalized taxa, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
Morphology of the family
Members of the Juncaginaceae are annual or perennial herbs that usually grow in wet soils. They may possess underground rhizomes, short underground stems or swollen, bulb-like bases through which they survive unfavourable periods.
The leaves develop mainly at the base of the plant. They are simple, narrow and linear and may be flat, semicylindrical or cylindrical. Their bases form sheaths enclosing the lower part of the stem.
The flowering stems are generally erect and terminate in elongated, spike-like or racemose inflorescences. The flowers are small, greenish or yellowish-green and lack bright colours or large petals.
Flowers of the genus Triglochin are usually bisexual and trimerous. The perianth consists of six small tepals arranged in two whorls. There are generally six stamens and six carpels, some of which may remain sterile or fail to develop completely.
The ovary is superior. Following fertilization, a dry schizocarpic fruit develops and divides at maturity into separate one-seeded units. These morphological characteristics are important for distinguishing species of the genus.
The species Triglochin barrelieri
Triglochin barrelieri is a small, bulbous geophyte with a Mediterranean distribution. It possesses narrow, linear leaves developing from the base and an erect flowering stem bearing an elongated inflorescence with numerous small flowers.
During flowering, the inflorescence is relatively compact, but it elongates as the fruits mature. The small fruits develop along the central axis, and their characteristics are important for reliable identification of the plant.
As a geophyte, the species survives the dry season through its swollen underground base. Its above-ground growth is associated with seasonal rainfall and the presence of adequate moisture in the soil.
Distribution
Triglochin barrelieri is a Mediterranean species. Its natural distribution includes countries and islands of southern Europe, northern Africa and the eastern Mediterranean. Cyprus forms part of its natural geographical range.
Its occurrence is generally local and depends on the presence of suitable wet or seasonally moist soils. Populations may be visible for only a limited period of the year when moisture conditions permit growth and flowering.
Habitats in Cyprus
In Cyprus, the species is associated with wet, seasonally flooded or saline habitats. It may grow in coastal marshes, along the margins of salt lakes, on brackish ground, in temporary pools, damp depressions and open places that retain water during the rainy season.
These habitats are characterized by pronounced seasonal changes. During winter and spring, they may be wet or temporarily flooded, whereas in summer they largely dry out. Triglochin barrelieri is adapted to this seasonal cycle.
Its distribution within a wetland may be influenced by small variations in ground elevation, the duration of flooding, salinity, substrate composition and competition with other plants.

Taxonomic notes
Triglochin barrelieri was scientifically described by Jean-Louis-Auguste Loiseleur-Deslongchamps in 1807. In older botanical literature concerning Cyprus, it has also been recorded within Triglochin bulbosa.
Modern taxonomic revisions of the Triglochin bulbosa complex recognize Triglochin barrelieri as an accepted, separate species. The accepted name Triglochin barrelieri Loisel. is used in the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora.
Reliable identification requires examination of the entire plant, particularly its underground base, leaves, inflorescence and mature fruits. Plants that have not yet produced mature fruits may be more difficult to identify with certainty.
Ecological importance
Although Juncaginaceae is represented in Cyprus by only one species, it forms a distinctive component of the flora of wet and saline habitats.
Triglochin barrelieri participates in specialized plant communities alongside other small annual or perennial plants adapted to seasonal flooding, salinity and summer drought.
Its presence indicates the persistence of particular microhabitats with suitable hydrology and soil conditions. Such habitats may support a significant number of specialized plants and invertebrates even when they occupy a very small area.
The conservation of the species depends directly on the natural functioning of wetlands. Changes in the duration of flooding or salinity may alter the vegetation and affect the plant’s ability to complete its life cycle.
Seasonality and reproduction
The plant begins growing after rainfall, when the soil has acquired sufficient moisture. Its leaves and flowering stems emerge during the cool, wet period, while flowering and fruiting are completed before the habitat dries out fully.
Pollination occurs mainly through the wind. After maturation, the fruits separate into small, one-seeded units. Their dispersal may be assisted by water, the movement of wet soil and the activity of animals.
The swollen underground base enables the plant to remain dormant during the hot, dry season. When suitable conditions return, the plant can produce a new above-ground shoot.
Threats and protection
The dependence of Triglochin barrelieri on wet and seasonally flooded habitats makes it vulnerable to hydrological changes. Drainage, excessive water extraction, diversion of natural water flow, the construction of drainage works and prolonged drought may reduce the number of suitable growing sites.
In coastal areas, significant pressures may result from residential and tourist development, road construction, land filling, encroachment on wetlands and the passage of vehicles across wet or saline ground.
Pollution, waste disposal, excessive nutrient accumulation and the spread of competitive plants may also alter the composition of the vegetation. Because the species is small and seasonal, its populations may easily be overlooked when development work is undertaken during the dry season.
Its protection requires the preservation of natural hydrological cycles, the prevention of damage to coastal and seasonal wetlands and the systematic monitoring of known sites during the appropriate season of the year.
