The family Lamiaceae, also known by the older name Labiatae, is a large family of flowering plants belonging to the order Lamiales. It is commonly known as the mint family. It includes numerous aromatic, medicinal, melliferous and edible plants, such as mints, oregano, thyme, savory, sage, lavender, rosemary and lemon balm.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Lamiaceae is represented in Cyprus by 32 genera and 83 taxa. Of these, 52 are native non-endemic, 24 are endemic to Cyprus, 5 are alien or naturalized and 2 are of uncertain status. No hybrids are recorded.

Morphology

Members of the family are mainly annual or perennial herbs, subshrubs and shrubs, while some trees and climbing plants also occur worldwide.

The stems are frequently square in cross-section. The leaves are generally simple, opposite and decussately arranged, without stipules. Their surfaces may bear glandular hairs that produce essential oils. For this reason, many species release a characteristic fragrance when their leaves or stems are rubbed.

The flowers are usually bisexual and zygomorphic. The corolla consists of five united petals and frequently forms two conspicuous lips. The upper lip may function as a hood, while the lower lip provides a landing surface for insects visiting the flower.

The calyx generally consists of five united sepals and remains around the fruit. There are usually four or two stamens. The superior ovary is deeply four-lobed, and at maturity the fruit generally divides into four one-seeded nutlets.

Distribution and habitats in Cyprus

Lamiaceae is one of the richest and most characteristic families of the Cypriot flora. Its members occur from the coastal zone to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains.

They grow in phrygana, maquis vegetation, pine forests, woodland clearings, rocky slopes, limestone cliffs, sand dunes, grasslands, stream banks, damp ground, cultivated land, roadsides and other disturbed places.

Many species are adapted to the conditions of the Mediterranean climate. They possess small or leathery leaves, dense hairs and glands containing essential oils, characteristics that reduce water loss and help the plants survive the long, hot and dry season.

Other members, particularly certain species of Mentha, Prunella and Teucrium, are associated with wetter soils, springs, streams or seasonally moist habitats.

Endemism

Lamiaceae exhibits a particularly high degree of endemism in Cyprus, with 24 endemic taxa. The endemic members of the family represent different evolutionary lineages and occur in a variety of habitats.

Some are associated with the Troodos mountain range and its ophiolitic rocks, while others occur in the Pentadaktylos range, the Karpasia Peninsula, western Cyprus, limestone cliffs, gorges or dry rocky slopes.

The concentration of numerous endemic taxa in the genera Teucrium, Phlomis, Scutellaria, Salvia and Origanum emphasizes the considerable phytogeographical and evolutionary importance of the family in Cyprus.

Ecological importance

The flowers of many species produce abundant nectar and pollen and attract honeybees, wild bees, butterflies, moths and other insects. Many members of the family are among the most important melliferous plants of Mediterranean vegetation.

The different flowering periods of the species provide food for pollinators from winter and spring through summer and autumn. Dense shrubs and subshrubs also provide shelter for small animals and contribute to soil stabilization.

The essential oils produced by many species provide protection against herbivores, pathogens and water loss. At the same time, these aromatic substances have made numerous members of the family important to humans.

Human uses

The family includes many of the best-known aromatic plants of Cyprus. Species of Origanum, Mentha, Salvia, Satureja, Thymbra, Thymus, Melissa, Lavandula and Rosmarinus are traditionally used as herbal infusions, seasonings or aromatic plants.

Many species are also cultivated as ornamentals or used in beekeeping and essential-oil production. Traditional use does not mean that every species is suitable for consumption. Safe use requires correct identification and appropriate knowledge of each plant’s properties.

Excessive or uncontrolled collection of wild aromatic and endemic plants may cause declines in their natural populations. Cultivation of appropriate species is preferable to collecting them from the wild.

Alien taxa and taxa of uncertain status

The five alien or naturalized taxa are associated with introductions for cultivation, ornamental use or other human activities. Some may maintain populations outside their original places of cultivation.

Their spread requires monitoring, particularly when they occur within or near natural habitats. Recording a plant as alien does not automatically mean that it is invasive.

Additional evidence is required for the two taxa of uncertain status to confirm their presence, origin and persistence in Cyprus. New field observations, documented specimens and careful examination of diagnostic characteristics are essential.

Threats and protection

Threats differ according to the distribution and habitat of each species. They include residential and tourist development, road construction, fires, land clearance, overgrazing, agricultural changes, quarrying, pollution and the alteration of wet habitats.

Climate change and prolonged periods of drought may affect plant growth, flowering and reproductive success. Species with extremely restricted geographical distributions are more vulnerable to local destructive events.

Special attention is required for the endemic taxa, particularly those restricted to a few locations or specialized substrates. Their protection requires habitat conservation, population monitoring and the prevention of uprooting or uncontrolled collection.
