The family Lentibulariaceae, commonly known as the bladderwort family, is a family of carnivorous flowering plants belonging to the order Lamiales. It includes terrestrial, epiphytic and aquatic plants that have developed specialized mechanisms for trapping small animals.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Lentibulariaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon. This is Pinguicula crystallina Sm., which is recorded as a native non-endemic species. No taxa endemic to Cyprus, alien/naturalized taxa, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.

Morphology of the family

Members of the family are small annual or perennial herbs. They display considerable morphological diversity, as some species grow on soil or wet rocks, while others live submerged or floating in water.

The three recognized genera of the family possess different mechanisms for capturing prey. Species of Pinguicula use sticky leaves, species of Utricularia use microscopic bladder-like suction traps, and species of Genlisea possess underground tubular traps.

The flowers are bisexual, zygomorphic and often conspicuous in relation to the plant’s small size. The corolla consists of five united petals and forms two lips. A nectar-containing spur is generally present at its base.

There are two stamens. The ovary is superior and consists of two united carpels. The fruit is a capsule containing numerous, very small seeds.

The genus Pinguicula

Species of the genus Pinguicula are commonly known as butterworts. They are small carnivorous plants that form a basal rosette of soft, fleshy and frequently glossy leaves.

The upper surface of the leaves is covered by two main types of glands. Stalked glands produce sticky mucilage that traps small arthropods, while sessile glands secrete digestive enzymes and absorb the dissolved nutrients.

The roots are generally thin and limited. They serve mainly to anchor the plant and absorb water, while a significant proportion of its nutrients is obtained from captured prey.

The flowers develop individually on slender, erect stalks. This raises them well above the sticky leaves, reducing the risk of trapping their pollinators.

The species Pinguicula crystallina

Pinguicula crystallina is a small perennial carnivorous plant. It forms a flat or slightly raised basal rosette of pale green to yellowish-green leaves.

The leaves are fleshy, elongated to ovate and covered by numerous glands. Droplets of the sticky secretion reflect light and give the surface a bright, crystalline appearance, a characteristic associated with the scientific name of the species.

The flowering stalks are slender, erect and leafless. Each stalk generally bears a single zygomorphic flower. The corolla may range from white or very pale to violet, depending on the individual plant and conditions.

The flower possesses a spur at the rear of the corolla. Following fertilization, a small capsule containing numerous fine seeds develops.

The trapping mechanism

The leaf surface functions as an active sticky trap. The glistening droplets of mucilage may attract small insects, mites and other arthropods moving on or near the plant.

When a small animal touches the leaf, it adheres to the mucilage. Its attempts to escape bring it into contact with additional glands, causing it to become more firmly trapped.

The leaf may curve slowly near the position of the prey, increasing contact with the digestive glands. Enzymes break down the soft tissues and release nitrogen, phosphorus and other nutrients.

These nutrients are absorbed through the leaf surface. Indigestible remains, such as the exoskeletons of insects, remain on the leaf or are later removed by rain and wind.

Why it is carnivorous

Carnivory is an adaptation to habitats that contain water but are poor in available nitrogen and other nutrients. In these locations, the absorption of small animals provides the plant with a supplementary source of nutrients.

Pinguicula crystallina continues to photosynthesize and produces the sugars it requires. It does not obtain its principal source of energy from insects. Its prey serves mainly as a supplementary source of mineral nutrients.

The combination of photosynthesis, water absorption through the roots and nutrient uptake from prey enables the plant to survive in exceptionally nutrient-poor and specialized microhabitats.

Distribution and habitats in Cyprus

In Cyprus, Pinguicula crystallina has a restricted and localized distribution. It is associated with permanently or persistently wet microhabitats, mainly in areas where clean water continuously seeps or drips.

It may grow on wet rocks, steep rocky surfaces, near springs, small waterfalls and streams, and in shaded places where the substrate remains moist.

It frequently roots in a very thin layer of soil, moss or organic material on the surface of rocks. These locations contain limited nutrients but provide the moisture required by the plant.

The species depends on the continued functioning of very small hydrological systems. Even a minor change in water flow or quality may affect an entire colony.

Native non-endemic taxon

Pinguicula

Flowering and reproduction

The period of growth and flowering depends on water availability, temperature, elevation and the aspect of the site. In suitably wet locations, plants may retain active rosettes for much of the year.

The flowers are pollinated by small insects attracted by their colour, form and nectar. Raising the flowers on long stalks separates the pollinators spatially from the leaf traps.

Following pollination, a capsule containing numerous microscopic seeds develops. The seeds may be transported by water, wind or the movement of wet material to nearby suitable locations.

New plants can become established only when the seeds reach surfaces that remain sufficiently moist and are not covered by dense, competing vegetation.

Ecological importance

Pinguicula crystallina is a highly specialized component of the Cypriot flora. Its presence indicates habitats with persistent moisture, distinctive hydrology and relatively low nutrient concentrations.

Its sticky leaves mainly capture very small invertebrates. Although each plant captures a limited quantity of prey, this mechanism represents an important example of the evolutionary adaptation of plants to their environmental conditions.

Colonies of the plant may coexist with mosses, liverworts, algae, ferns and other moisture-loving plants. Together, they form small but highly complex communities on rocks and around springs.

Because it depends on clean, consistently available water, the species may function as a sensitive indicator of changes in the condition of springs and wet rocky habitats.

Threats and protection

Its restricted distribution and dependence on specialized wet microhabitats make the species particularly vulnerable to local changes.

Water extraction or diversion, the installation of pipes, alteration of springs and streams, and prolonged drought may reduce or interrupt the flow that keeps the substrate wet.

Other threats include water pollution, waste disposal, road construction, destruction of rocky surfaces, intensive human passage and the illegal collection of plants.

Increased nutrient concentrations in the water may favour faster-growing plants or algae that cover the surfaces and compete with Pinguicula crystallina.

Its protection requires the maintenance of natural water flow and quality, the prevention of disturbance to springs and wet rocks, and population monitoring. Plants should never be touched, uprooted or collected.

Observation and photography

The plant’s small size and wet habitat require particular care during observation. Walking on wet rocks, mosses or thin layers of soil may destroy plants that are not immediately visible.

Photography should be undertaken without moving the plants or altering their substrate. A lens suitable for close-up photography should be used, and no intervention should be made to create a clearer background.

The precise locations of vulnerable populations should be disclosed cautiously to reduce the risk of illegal collection or excessive visitation.
