Fritillaria
Gagea
Tulipa
Christodoulou, R. Hand και C. Charalambous.

Text by George Konstantinou
The family Liliaceae, commonly known as the lily family, is a family of monocotyledonous flowering plants belonging to the order Liliales. It consists mainly of perennial, herbaceous and bulbous geophytes, frequently possessing conspicuous flowers.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Liliaceae is represented in Cyprus by 3 genera and 11 taxa. Of these, 8 are native non-endemic, 2 are endemic to Cyprus and 1 is alien or naturalized. No hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
The most diverse genus is Gagea, with 6 species. The genus Fritillaria is represented by 2 species and the genus Tulipa by 3 species.
Morphology
Members of the family are generally perennial geophytes that survive the unfavourable season through underground bulbs. The bulbs store water and nutrients and enable the plants to remain dormant during the hot, dry summer.
The roots develop from the base of the bulb. The leaves are simple, entire and usually linear, lanceolate or elongated. They may grow exclusively at the base or be distributed along the flowering stem.
The flowers are generally bisexual and actinomorphic. The perianth consists of six petaloid tepals arranged in two whorls of three. There are six stamens and a superior ovary consisting of three united carpels.
The flowers may be solitary or arranged in inflorescences. In some species, they are erect and open, while in others, including several fritillaries, they are pendulous and bell-shaped.
The fruit is generally a three-chambered capsule. When mature, it opens and releases numerous seeds, which may be flattened or winged.
Distribution and habitats in Cyprus
Members of the Liliaceae occur at different elevations and in different habitats throughout Cyprus. They may be found in phrygana, scrubland, grassland, woodland clearings, cultivated or abandoned land and rocky slopes.
Species of Gagea are generally small, early-flowering geophytes. Many rapidly complete their growth, flowering and fruiting during the cool, wet season.
Fritillaries occur in open or partially shaded places, in scrubland, grassland, rocky slopes and woodland clearings. Species of Tulipa are associated with more specific habitats that differ according to the species.
The two endemic tulips have particular phytogeographical and ecological importance. Tulipa akamasica is associated with a restricted area of the Akamas Peninsula and serpentine substrate, while Tulipa cypria occurs in Cypriot habitats where suitable soil and ecological conditions persist.

The genera of the family in Cyprus
Fritillaria
Species of Fritillaria are bulbous geophytes with erect stems and characteristic pendulous, bell-shaped flowers. The generic name is associated with the Latin word fritillus, referring to the spotted or chequered pattern displayed by the flowers of some species.
Fritillaria acmopetala and Fritillaria persica are the two species recorded in Cyprus. Following flowering, they produce erect capsules containing numerous flattened seeds.
Gagea
Species of Gagea are small bulbous geophytes with narrow leaves and generally yellow or yellowish-green flowers. They appear early during the rainy season and often remain visible for only a short period.
Their reliable identification may be difficult. It requires examination of the number and form of the basal leaves, bracts, inflorescence, hairs, bulb and reproductive characteristics.
Tulipa
Species of Tulipa are bulbous geophytes with fleshy leaves and large, generally solitary flowers. The six tepals may be brightly coloured and frequently possess a differently coloured basal blotch.
Two endemic species and one alien or naturalized species are recorded in Cyprus. The presence of two distinct endemic tulips gives the family exceptional importance for the conservation of the Cypriot flora.
The endemic Tulipa akamasica
Tulipa akamasica was described as a species new to science in 2014 by C.S. Christodoulou, R. Hand and C. Charalambous. Its name refers to the Akamas Peninsula, where it was discovered.
It is a delicate bulbous geophyte with an erect stem and usually a single flower. The flowers are bright red and possess a dark, almost black blotch at the base of the tepals, bordered by a narrow yellowish band.
The species has an extremely restricted distribution and is associated with phrygana on serpentine substrate. Its small geographical range and limited population make it particularly vulnerable to any alteration of its habitat.
The endemic Tulipa cypria
Tulipa cypria is a bulbous geophyte endemic to Cyprus. The scientific epithet cypria refers directly to its Cypriot origin.
It produces broad, frequently slightly wavy leaves and a large, conspicuous flower. Its identification is based on the combination of characteristics of the bulb, leaves, stem, tepals and basal floral blotch.
Its populations depend on the preservation of suitable open habitats. Changes in land use, deep ploughing, construction work and uncontrolled collection may directly affect the plants and their underground bulbs.
The alien Tulipa agenensis
Tulipa agenensis is recorded in the checklist as an alien or naturalized species. Its presence in Cyprus is associated with earlier introduction and cultivation by humans.
It is a bulbous plant with a large red flower and a dark basal blotch. It may survive in old cultivated or abandoned agricultural land.
The occurrence of an alien species in historic agricultural landscapes may have cultural interest. However, it must be clearly distinguished from the two endemic species, and its spread should be monitored.
Seasonality and life cycle
Species of the family have a strongly seasonal life cycle. Following the first rains, the bulbs produce new roots and leaves. Growth continues through winter and spring while soil moisture is available.
Flowering occurs according to the species, elevation and weather conditions. Following pollination and fruit maturation, the above-ground parts turn yellow and dry out.
The bulb remains below ground in a dormant state during the dry summer. It stores the nutrients required for growth during the following season.
Ecological importance
The flowers of Liliaceae species provide pollen and nectar to insects during winter and spring. The early flowering of some species makes them an important food source when relatively few other plants are in bloom.
The bulbs and other underground parts form part of the soil and subterranean biomass of the ecosystems. The plants also contribute to the structure and seasonal diversity of grasslands, phrygana and woodland clearings.
The two endemic species of Tulipa constitute a unique component of Cyprus’s evolutionary and natural heritage. Their loss from the wild would mean the global extinction of the respective species.
Threats and protection
The most important threats include habitat loss and alteration, residential and tourist development, road construction, changes in land use, deep ploughing, land clearance and fires.
Uprooting or collecting flowering plants is particularly harmful. Removing the bulb destroys the entire plant, while cutting flowers before fruiting prevents seed production.
Uncontrolled photography may also cause damage when visitors trample small plants or compact the soil around populations. Observation should be conducted from a distance without moving the surrounding vegetation.
The endemic species require protection of known locations, regular population monitoring and maintenance of appropriate habitat-management conditions.
