Lythrum tribracteatum

The family Lythraceae, commonly known as the loosestrife family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Myrtales. It includes annual and perennial herbs, shrubs and trees, with representatives in temperate, subtropical and tropical regions.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Lythraceae is represented in Cyprus by 2 genera and 4 taxa. Of these, 3 are native non-endemic and 1 is alien or naturalized. No taxa endemic to Cyprus, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
The genus Lythrum is represented by three native species, while the genus Punica is represented by the alien or naturalized pomegranate, Punica granatum.
Morphology of the family
Members of the Lythraceae display considerable morphological diversity. They may be small annual herbs of wet soils, perennial moisture-loving plants, shrubs or trees.
The leaves are generally simple, entire and without stipules. They may be opposite, whorled or alternate, depending on the genus and species.
The flowers are usually bisexual and actinomorphic or slightly zygomorphic. The calyx frequently forms a conspicuous tube or floral cup, at the edge of which the sepals and petals are positioned.
The petals are generally free and often crumpled. The stamens may equal or exceed the number of petals and are attached to the inner surface of the floral tube.
The ovary is generally superior or surrounded by the floral tube without being fully united to it. The fruit may be a dry capsule or, in some genera, fleshy and specialized.
The genus Lythrum
Species of Lythrum are annual or perennial herbs associated mainly with wet or seasonally moist habitats. Their stems are slender, erect or ascending and frequently branched.
The leaves are simple and entire and may be alternate or opposite. The flowers develop individually in the leaf axils or form more conspicuous inflorescences.
The petals are generally pink, purple or violet, although they may be very small in some species. The number and length of the stamens, form of the floral tube and arrangement of the leaves are important diagnostic characteristics.
The fruit is a capsule containing numerous small seeds. The seeds are dispersed close to the parent plant or transported by water and wet soil.
The genus Punica
The genus Punica includes woody plants displaying considerable morphological differences from the herbaceous species of Lythrum. Its best-known representative is the pomegranate, Punica granatum.
The pomegranate is a deciduous shrub or small tree. Its leaves are simple, opposite or clustered in small groups and possess a glossy surface. Young shoots may terminate in spine-like points.
The flowers are large and conspicuous, generally bright red or orange-red. The calyx is thick and leathery and remains at the crown of the mature fruit.
The pomegranate fruit is large, spherical and leathery. It contains numerous seeds, each surrounded by a fleshy and juicy seed covering.
Distribution and habitats in Cyprus
The three species of Lythrum occur in wet or seasonally flooded habitats. They may be found near streams, rivers, springs, reservoirs, temporary pools, wet grasslands and depressions that retain water during the rainy season.
Lythrum hyssopifolia and Lythrum tribracteatum are annual plants capable of rapidly completing their life cycles before the habitat dries out completely.
Lythrum junceum is a perennial or helophytic plant. It grows in wet soils, along the margins of water bodies and in places where moisture remains available for a longer period.
Punica granatum is associated mainly with cultivation, orchards, gardens, old settlements and abandoned agricultural land. It may survive or reproduce beyond its original places of cultivation, particularly near water or on relatively moist soils.

The native species
Lythrum hyssopifolia
Lythrum hyssopifolia is a small annual plant of wet and temporarily flooded soils. It possesses slender stems, narrow leaves and small flowers developing in the leaf axils.
It may occur in temporary pools, damp depressions, reservoir margins and other habitats flooded in winter but drying during spring or summer.
Its presence may vary greatly between years, depending on the amount and distribution of rainfall.
Lythrum junceum
Lythrum junceum is a perennial or helophytic species with slender stems and pink to purple flowers. It is widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean and neighbouring regions.
In Cyprus, it is associated with damp soil and banks. Its growth and flowering depend on sufficient moisture remaining available during the active growing period.
Lythrum tribracteatum
Lythrum tribracteatum is a small annual species adapted to seasonally moist habitats. It completes its life cycle during the relatively short period in which the soil remains wet.
Its identification requires careful examination of the arrangement of leaves and bracts, floral tube, petals, stamens and mature capsule.
The pomegranate – Punica granatum
Punica granatum is one of the oldest cultivated fruit plants. Its natural distribution extends from northeastern Türkiye and the Caucasus region to Iran and western and northern Pakistan.
Through cultivation, it spread throughout the Mediterranean and many other parts of the world from antiquity. In the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, it is recorded as an alien or naturalized species.
Pomegranate trees may survive for many decades in abandoned orchards and old settlements. They may also reproduce from seeds and occur in nearby locations.
The fruit is used as food, for juice production and in various traditional preparations. The pomegranate is also cultivated as an ornamental for its flowers and fruits.
Taxonomic position of the pomegranate
The genus Punica was formerly placed in a separate family, Punicaceae. More recent phylogenetic studies demonstrated that it belongs within the broader Lythraceae.
In modern classification, Lythraceae therefore includes both small wetland herbs, such as species of Lythrum, and woody plants with large fleshy fruits, such as the pomegranate.
This taxonomic placement explains the considerable morphological diversity observed among the representatives of the family in Cyprus.
Flowering and reproduction
Species of Lythrum flower mainly during spring and summer, depending on water availability and the duration of the wet period.
Their flowers are pollinated by small insects, while self-pollination may also occur in some species or under particular conditions. At maturity, the capsules release small seeds.
The large, brightly coloured flowers of the pomegranate attract honeybees and other insects. The fruits develop following fertilization and mature several months later.
Pomegranate seeds are dispersed by humans and animals consuming the fruits. The plant can also be propagated through cuttings or shoots developing from its base.
Ecological importance
Species of Lythrum form part of the specialized flora of wetlands and temporary pools. They contribute to the plant diversity of locations experiencing pronounced seasonal changes.
Their flowers provide food for insects, while their stems and root systems contribute to the retention of wet soil and fine sediments.
The presence of small annual species may indicate that the natural cycle of winter flooding and summer drying is still operating within a habitat.
Old pomegranate trees provide flowers, fruits and shelter for various organisms. They also form a characteristic component of traditional agricultural landscapes.
Threats and protection
Species of Lythrum depend on the preservation of wet and seasonally flooded habitats. Drainage, excessive water extraction, pollution, land filling and alteration of natural water flow may destroy their locations.
Temporary pools and small damp depressions are particularly vulnerable because they may mistakenly be considered useless or empty land during the dry period.
Vehicle passage, waste dumping, deep ploughing and construction work may destroy the plants and the soil seed bank.
Their conservation requires protection of natural hydrological cycles, avoidance of disturbance during the growing period and recognition of the ecological importance of even very small or temporary wetlands.
