The family Malvaceae, commonly known as the mallow family, is a large and morphologically diverse family of flowering plants belonging to the order Malvales. It includes annual and perennial herbs, shrubs and trees.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Malvaceae is represented in Cyprus by 9 genera and 21 taxa. Of these, 15 are native non-endemic and 6 are alien or naturalized. No taxa endemic to Cyprus, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
The most diverse genus is Malva, with 10 taxa. The genera Alcea, Althaea and Corchorus are each represented by two taxa, while Abutilon, Brachychiton, Hibiscus, Malvastrum and Malvella are each represented by one taxon.
Morphology
Members of the Malvaceae display a wide variety of forms. The native Cypriot taxa are mainly annual or perennial herbs, while the alien taxa include the tree Brachychiton populneus.
The stems and leaves frequently bear simple, branched or star-shaped hairs. The tissues of many species contain mucilaginous substances that become noticeable when the leaves or other parts are crushed or wetted.
The leaves are generally alternate and possess stipules. They are simple but are frequently palmately veined, lobed or deeply divided. Leaf shape and the type of indumentum are important identification characteristics.
The flowers are generally bisexual, actinomorphic and five-parted. They possess five sepals and five free petals, which may be white, pink, purple, red or yellowish.
In many genera, an additional whorl of bracts, known as the epicalyx, occurs outside the calyx. The number and form of its segments help distinguish related species.
The stamens are numerous. Their filaments are generally united to form a characteristic tube around the style. The pollen is often large and may possess a spiny surface.
The ovary is superior and consists of two to numerous carpels. The fruit may be a capsule, a schizocarp separating into one-seeded mericarps, or another specialized structure.
The modern concept of Malvaceae
In older taxonomic treatments, some genera now included in Malvaceae were placed in separate families, such as Sterculiaceae and Tiliaceae.
Modern phylogenetic studies demonstrated that these groups belong to a broader Malvaceae. Consequently, Brachychiton, formerly placed in Sterculiaceae, and Corchorus, associated with Tiliaceae, are now included in Malvaceae.
This broader taxonomic treatment explains the considerable morphological difference between the small herbs of Malva, species of Corchorus and the large trees of Brachychiton.
Distribution and habitats in Cyprus
Native members of Malvaceae occur in a variety of open and frequently disturbed habitats. They may be found in fields, abandoned cultivated land, grasslands, roadsides, gardens, embankments, villages and around livestock facilities.
Some species also grow in phrygana, scrubland, rocky slopes, sandy soils or openings in natural vegetation. Their occurrence is influenced by soil type, moisture, grazing and the degree of disturbance.
Many species of Malva favour nitrogen-rich soils and frequently occur near inhabited or cultivated areas. Other species have more localized ecological requirements.
Alien or naturalized taxa are associated mainly with cultivation, gardens, avenues, agricultural activity and the accidental transport of seeds. Some can establish populations outside their original places of introduction.

The genus Malva
Malva is the genus containing the greatest number of taxa in the Cypriot Malvaceae. It includes annual, biennial or perennial herbs with palmately veined leaves and flowers occurring individually or in small groups in the leaf axils.
The flowers are generally pink, purple or whitish-pink and frequently possess darker veins. The fruit is a characteristic schizocarp resembling a small, flat disc and separating into one-seeded mericarps.
Distinguishing the species requires examination of leaf shape, epicalyx, calyx, indumentum, length of the flower stalks and form of the mericarps.
Malva sylvestris, commonly known as common mallow, is one of the most recognizable members of the family. However, several related species occur in Cyprus and may be confused unless their diagnostic characteristics are examined.
The other native genera
Alcea acaulis, Althaea hirsuta and Althaea setosa differ from typical mallows in plant form, indumentum, leaves and the structure of the epicalyx and fruit.
Hibiscus trionum is an annual plant with characteristic flowers possessing pale petals and a dark centre. Its capsule is surrounded by the enlarged, persistent calyx.
Malvella sherardiana is a low or creeping plant with distinctive leaves, flowers and fruits. Correct identification requires careful examination of mature material.
The alien taxa
Abutilon theophrasti is an annual species with large heart-shaped leaves and a fruit composed of numerous segments. It is frequently associated with cultivated and disturbed soils.
Alcea rosea, commonly known as hollyhock, is cultivated as an ornamental for its tall flowering stems and large flowers. It may occur outside gardens and old cultivated sites.
Brachychiton populneus is an evergreen or semi-evergreen tree of Australian origin. It is planted along streets and in parks and gardens and can produce numerous seeds in characteristic woody fruits.
Corchorus olitorius and Corchorus trilocularis are annual herbs. Corchorus olitorius is cultivated in various regions for its fibres and edible leaves.
Malvastrum coromandelianum is a herbaceous or semi-woody plant of American origin that has spread through many warm regions of the world. It generally occurs in disturbed locations.
Flowering and pollination
Most native taxa flower from winter through spring or early summer. The exact period depends on species, elevation, temperature and rainfall.
The flowers attract honeybees, wild bees, beetles, butterflies and other insects. Their large petals, conspicuous veins and abundant pollen function as visual and nutritional attractants.
Self-pollination is also possible in several species. The production of numerous resistant seeds enables many species to occupy disturbed or recently exposed ground rapidly.
Ecological importance
The flowers of Malvaceae provide an important source of pollen and nectar for pollinators. The extended flowering period of some species offers food at times when other plants are less available.
The seeds and green parts are consumed by various invertebrates, birds and herbivorous animals. Several species also serve as host plants for insect larvae.
The deeper or extensive root systems of certain perennial species help stabilize the soil. Annual species temporarily cover bare surfaces and add organic matter after completing their life cycles.
Human uses
Many members of the family have a long history of human use. Mallows contain mucilaginous substances and have traditionally been used as food or for various other purposes.
Corchorus olitorius is used for jute production and as a leafy vegetable in several countries. Other members of the wider family include globally important crops such as cotton and cacao, although these are not included as taxa in this Cypriot checklist.
Traditional use does not mean that every species or every part is suitable for consumption. Reliable identification and appropriate knowledge are required before any use.
Alien taxa and monitoring
The six alien or naturalized taxa have different origins and pathways of introduction. Some were introduced as ornamental or cultivated plants, while others were probably transported with agricultural products or seeds.
Recording them as alien does not mean that they are all invasive. Their spread, reproduction and capacity to establish within natural habitats require monitoring.
Particular attention is required when an alien species forms dense populations, spreads rapidly or competes with native vegetation.
Threats and protection
Native species of open and agricultural habitats are affected by agricultural intensification, herbicide use, deep ploughing, residential development and the loss of traditional rural landscapes.
The abandonment of certain traditional practices may also lead to the closure of vegetation and the disappearance of open sites required by small annual plants.
Fires, overgrazing and prolonged drought may affect growth and seed production. Their effects depend on the frequency and intensity of the disturbance.
Conservation of the family requires preservation of diverse open habitats, limitation of unnecessary chemical use and monitoring of the spread of alien taxa.
