Peganum
- Peganum harmala L. · Species

The Nitrariaceae belongs to the order Sapindales. It comprises mainly shrubs, subshrubs and perennial or annual herbs, many of which are adapted to dry, saline or desert environments.
According to the current taxonomic treatment of Plants of the World Online, the family comprises 4 accepted genera and approximately 17 species worldwide. Its genera are Malacocarpus, Nitraria, Peganum and Tetradiclis. Their natural distribution covers parts of the Mediterranean, Africa, Asia and Australia.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the Nitrariaceae is represented on the island by 1 genus and 1 taxon. This is the native non-endemic species Peganum harmala. No endemic, alien or naturalized taxa, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
Morphology
Members of the family display considerable morphological diversity. They may be succulent or spiny shrubs, small subshrubs or herbaceous plants. Many species possess characteristics that enable them to survive in environments with limited moisture, high temperatures or increased salinity.
The leaves are simple or deeply divided and may be opposite or alternate. In some genera they are succulent, while in Peganum they are divided into narrow, linear segments.
The flowers are generally bisexual and radially symmetrical. They have four or five sepals, an equal number of free petals and several stamens. The ovary is superior and formed from fused carpels.
The fruits differ among the genera. In Nitraria they are usually fleshy drupes, whereas in Peganum they are dry, nearly spherical capsules divided internally into chambers and containing numerous seeds.
Distribution and habitats
The Nitrariaceae occurs mainly in dry, semi-arid and saline regions. Its species grow in deserts, semi-deserts, salt flats, steppe vegetation, sandy sites and dry shrublands.
Peganum harmala has a broad natural distribution extending from the Mediterranean to Mongolia and India. It has also been introduced into other parts of the world, where it may spread in disturbed and dry habitats.
In Cyprus, it is associated mainly with warm and dry lowland areas. It may occur on open uncultivated ground, roadsides, field margins, overgrazed sites, sandy or stony soils and other disturbed habitats. It tolerates drought and can survive in soils with relatively high salinity.
Native non-endemic taxa
Peganum
- Peganum harmala L. · Species
Peganum harmala, commonly known as Syrian rue or harmal, is a perennial, strongly branched herb or small subshrub. Its numerous stems grow from a woody base and may form dense, rounded vegetation.
The leaves are alternate and deeply divided into narrow, almost linear segments. Their form reduces the exposed leaf surface and represents an adaptation to dry conditions.
The flowers are usually borne singly opposite the leaves or at the ends of short shoots. They possess five narrow, white to whitish petals, five sepals and numerous yellow stamens.
The fruit is a nearly spherical, three-chambered capsule that becomes dry and brown at maturity. It contains numerous small, angular, dark-brown seeds.
Endemic taxa
No endemic taxa of the family Nitrariaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Alien or naturalized taxa
No alien or naturalized taxa of the family Nitrariaceae are recorded in the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus.
Hybrids
No hybrids of the family Nitrariaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Taxa of uncertain status
No taxa of uncertain status belonging to the family Nitrariaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Adaptations to dry environments
Peganum harmala possesses a deep and strong root system that enables it to use moisture from deeper soil layers. Its perennial woody base allows new stems to develop following the dry period or after superficial disturbance.
Its leaves are divided into very narrow segments, reducing water loss through transpiration. The plant completes most of its vegetative growth and flowering while moisture is available and may greatly reduce its activity during the driest part of the year.
Its tolerance of dry, nutrient-poor and slightly saline soils allows it to grow in locations where many other plants have difficulty surviving.
Ecological importance
The species is a characteristic component of dry and open ecosystems. Its flowers attract various insects that visit the stamens and contribute to pollination.
Its dense base and numerous stems can provide limited cover for small invertebrates. Its root system also helps stabilize the soil in dry and exposed sites.
Its presence in disturbed environments demonstrates its ability to survive under intense drought, grazing and limited nutrient availability.
Chemical substances and traditional uses
Peganum harmala is known for the presence of bioactive alkaloids, particularly in its seeds and roots. Different parts of the plant have traditionally been used as dyes, as incense and in folk-healing practices in parts of the Mediterranean, the Middle East and Asia.
Despite these traditional uses, the plant contains potent pharmacologically active and potentially toxic substances. Ingestion of the seeds or other plant parts can cause serious poisoning and dangerous interactions with medicines.
It should not be taken internally or used medicinally without specialist medical and scientific guidance. References to its traditional uses are provided exclusively for historical and informational purposes.
Threats and protection
Peganum harmala is a resilient plant with a broad global distribution. Its small or isolated populations in Cyprus may, however, be affected by land-use change, intensive agriculture, residential development, road construction, herbicide use and extensive clearance of roadside vegetation.
The conservation of traditional open landscapes, uncultivated areas and natural field margins contributes to the protection of the species and other plants of dry ecosystems.
