Olea

  1. Olea europaea L. · Species

Phillyrea

  1. Phillyrea latifolia L. · Species

The Oleaceae, commonly known as the olive family, belongs to the order Lamiales. It consists mainly of trees, shrubs and climbing plants. Many of its members are of considerable ecological, economic and ornamental importance.

According to the current taxonomic treatment of Plants of the World Online, the family comprises 27 accepted genera and approximately 600 species worldwide. Its best-known genera include Olea, Fraxinus, Jasminum, Syringa, Ligustrum, Phillyrea and Forsythia.

According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the Oleaceae is represented on the island by 3 genera and 3 taxa. Of these, 2 taxa are native non-endemic and 1 taxon is alien or naturalized. No endemic taxa, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.

Morphology

Members of the Oleaceae are mainly trees and shrubs and, less frequently, climbing plants. They may be evergreen or deciduous, depending on the species and the environment in which they grow.

The leaves are generally opposite and lack stipules. They may be simple, as in the olive and mock privet, or compound and pinnate, as in ash trees. Their margins may be entire or toothed.

The flowers are generally small, radially symmetrical and four-parted. The calyx and corolla usually consist of four parts, although they may be absent in some species. A characteristic feature of the family is the usual presence of two stamens. The ovary is superior and consists of two fused carpels.

The flowers may be bisexual or unisexual and pollinated by insects or wind. The fruits are highly variable and may be drupes, capsules, berries or winged dry fruits.

In the olive, the fruit is a fleshy drupe with a hard endocarp. In Phillyrea, it is a small spherical drupe, while in ash trees it is an elongated, winged dry fruit known as a samara.

Distribution and habitats

The Oleaceae has an almost worldwide distribution, occurring in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. Its members inhabit Mediterranean shrublands, forests, savannas, riparian habitats and mountainous areas.

Olea europaea has a natural distribution extending across Africa, the Mediterranean and parts of Asia. It has been cultivated for thousands of years for its fruits and oil and is one of the most characteristic plants of the Mediterranean landscape.

Phillyrea latifolia is a Mediterranean species forming part of maquis and woodland vegetation. It grows in shrublands, forest margins, rocky slopes, ravines and other sites with natural woody vegetation.

Fraxinus angustifolia is a deciduous tree associated mainly with moist soils, rivers, streams and other riparian locations. The subspecies angustifolia is recorded in the Cyprus checklist as alien or naturalized.

Native non-endemic taxa

Olea

  1. Olea europaea L. · Species

Olea europaea, commonly known as the olive, is an evergreen tree or shrub with slow growth and great longevity. The trunk of old trees frequently becomes thick, twisted and hollow, while the root system is strong and well adapted to dry Mediterranean conditions.

The leaves are opposite, simple, leathery and lanceolate. Their upper surface is greyish-green, while the lower surface is silvery because of the presence of dense, fine hairs that help reduce water loss.

The flowers are small, white to yellowish and borne in branched inflorescences in the leaf axils. The fruit is a drupe, initially green and generally becoming purple or black when mature.

In Cyprus, the olive occurs as a cultivated tree, in abandoned olive groves and as part of natural or semi-wild Mediterranean vegetation. It is one of the most important plants in the island’s agricultural, economic and cultural history.

Phillyrea

  1. Phillyrea latifolia L. · Species

Phillyrea latifolia, commonly known in English as broad-leaved mock privet, is an evergreen shrub or small tree with a dense crown. It is a characteristic component of Mediterranean maquis vegetation.

The leaves are opposite, leathery and glossy. They are variable in shape and may be ovate, elliptical or lanceolate, with entire or slightly toothed margins.

The flowers are small, greenish or yellowish-white and borne in small groups in the leaf axils. The fruits are small, nearly spherical drupes that become blue-black or black when mature.

The species is resistant to drought, high temperatures and nutrient-poor rocky soils. It can resprout following cutting or limited disturbance.

Endemic taxa

No endemic taxa of the family Oleaceae are recorded in Cyprus.

Alien or naturalized taxa

Fraxinus

  1. Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl subsp. angustifolia · Subspecies

Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. angustifolia, commonly known as narrow-leaved ash, is a deciduous tree that may develop a tall trunk and an open or rounded crown.

The leaves are opposite and compound, consisting of several narrow, lanceolate leaflets with toothed margins. The small flowers may appear before the leaves are fully developed.

The fruit is a samara, a dry, one-seeded fruit with an elongated wing. The wing enables it to be carried some distance from the parent tree by the wind.

According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the subspecies is recorded on the island as an alien or naturalized taxon.

Hybrids

No hybrids of the family Oleaceae are recorded in the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus.

Taxa of uncertain status

No taxa of uncertain status belonging to the family Oleaceae are recorded in Cyprus.

Ecological importance

The olive and broad-leaved mock privet are important components of Mediterranean woody vegetation. Their evergreen leaves provide cover for small animals and birds throughout the year.

The fleshy fruits of the olive and Phillyrea are eaten by birds and other animals, which contribute to seed dispersal. Their flowers also provide food for insects during the flowering period.

Old olive trees provide cavities, crevices and shelter for numerous invertebrates, reptiles, birds and small mammals. Traditional olive groves can support considerable biodiversity, particularly when herbicides and pesticides are not used intensively.

Ash trees are associated with wetter habitats. Their crowns and root systems can provide shade, stabilize the soil and contribute to the structure of riparian vegetation.

Economic and cultural importance

The olive is one of the most important cultivated plants of Cyprus and the Mediterranean region. Its fruits are used for consumption and olive-oil production, while its wood is used in woodcarving and the manufacture of various objects.

Olive cultivation is closely connected with the history, traditional agriculture, diet, religion and culture of Cyprus. Old olive groves and ancient trees are living elements of the island’s natural and cultural heritage.

Various members of the Oleaceae are cultivated worldwide as ornamental plants, including lilacs, jasmines, forsythias and privets. Ash wood is also used in many countries for furniture, tools and sporting equipment.

Threats and protection

Natural populations of the olive and Phillyrea may be affected by clearance of natural vegetation, excessively frequent fires, residential development, road construction and land-use change.

Traditional olive groves are locally threatened by abandonment, replacement of old trees, agricultural intensification and excessive chemical use. Conserving old trees and the natural vegetation between cultivated areas supports biodiversity.

Wet and riparian habitats in which ash trees may become established are especially vulnerable to drainage, water diversion, engineering works, pollution and prolonged drought.
