Το Plants of the World Online αναγνωρίζει σήμερα 4 γένη στην οικογένεια: Botrychium, Helminthostachys, Mankyua και Ophioglossum.
Ophioglossum
- Ophioglossum lusitanicum L. · Species
- Ophioglossum vulgatum L. · Species

Text by George Konstantinou
The Ophioglossaceae, commonly known as the adder’s-tongue family, is a distinctive and ancient evolutionary lineage of ferns. It belongs to the order Ophioglossales and comprises small, mainly terrestrial, seedless vascular plants.
Its members do not produce flowers, fruits or seeds but reproduce through spores. They differ morphologically from most familiar ferns because they usually do not develop characteristically divided fronds. Instead, they possess a simple or divided leaf with a separate fertile portion.
Plants of the World Online currently recognizes 4 genera in the family: Botrychium, Helminthostachys, Mankyua and Ophioglossum. The broader classification of the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group separates additional genera. Overall, the family is estimated to contain approximately 112 species worldwide.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the Ophioglossaceae is represented on the island by 1 genus and 2 taxa. Both are native non-endemic species. No endemic, alien or naturalized taxa, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
Morphology
Members of the Ophioglossaceae are perennial geophytes with a small underground stem or rhizome and fleshy roots. Most of the plant remains concealed beneath the soil surface.
Usually, only one leaf appears during each growing season. The leaf is divided into two functional portions:
- A sterile, green and leaf-like portion that carries out photosynthesis.
- An erect fertile portion, known as the sporophore or spore-bearing segment, which bears the sporangia.
In the genus Ophioglossum, the sterile portion is simple, entire and generally ovate to lanceolate. The fertile axis is narrow and elongated, with two rows of sporangia. Its form resembles a slender tongue, from which the English name adder’s-tongue is derived.
The sporangia are relatively large and possess thick walls, developing from several initial cells. This type of development is described as eusporangiate and differs from the leptosporangiate condition found in most other modern ferns.
Reproduction and life cycle
The mature sporangia open and release microscopic spores. When the spores reach a suitable moist substrate, they can germinate and form the gametophyte.
The gametophyte of the Ophioglossaceae is small, colourless, subterranean and does not carry out normal photosynthesis. It depends on a symbiotic association with soil fungi for nutrients and energy.
Fertilization requires water, allowing the motile male reproductive cells to reach the female reproductive organ. Following fertilization, a new sporophyte—the visible plant—develops.
The close relationship with soil fungi and the requirement for particular moisture conditions help explain why the species may appear only in certain years or remain underground and unnoticed for long periods.
Distribution and habitats
The family has a broad worldwide distribution and occurs in temperate, subtropical and tropical regions. Its species grow in grasslands, moist forests, woodland openings, sandy areas, seasonally wet soils and mountainous regions.
Ophioglossum lusitanicum is native to Macaronesia, northwestern Europe and the Mediterranean. It is a small Mediterranean species that appears mainly during the wet part of the year.
Ophioglossum vulgatum occurs naturally across temperate Eurasia and northwestern Africa. It is generally associated with damp meadows, springs, riparian sites and other habitats with sufficient soil moisture.
In Cyprus, both species can easily pass unnoticed because of their small size, brief above-ground appearance and resemblance to the surrounding herbaceous vegetation.
Native non-endemic taxa
Ophioglossum
- Ophioglossum lusitanicum L. · Species
Ophioglossum lusitanicum, commonly known as least adder’s-tongue, is a very small perennial fern with an underground stem and fleshy roots.
The sterile portion of the leaf is narrow, linear to lanceolate and generally remains close to the soil surface. The fertile axis is slender and erect and bears two rows of sporangia.
It appears mainly during winter and spring, when sufficient moisture is available. By the beginning of the dry period, its above-ground parts may already have disappeared.
It grows in short herbaceous vegetation, seasonally moist sandy or fine-textured soils, openings in shrubland and other sites that retain moisture during winter.
- Ophioglossum vulgatum L. · Species
Ophioglossum vulgatum, commonly known as common adder’s-tongue, is a perennial fern that is larger and generally broader than Ophioglossum lusitanicum.
The sterile portion of its leaf is fleshy, simple, entire and ovate to oblong. The fertile axis grows upright and terminates in a narrow spore-bearing structure with two rows of embedded sporangia.
It generally grows in damp meadows, near springs and streams, in moist woodland clearings and in other sites that retain sufficient soil moisture during its growing period.
The above-ground leaf is seasonal and may not appear every year, particularly when moisture conditions are unsuitable.
Endemic taxa
No endemic taxa of the family Ophioglossaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Alien or naturalized taxa
No alien or naturalized taxa of the family Ophioglossaceae are recorded in the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus.
Hybrids
No hybrids of the family Ophioglossaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Taxa of uncertain status
No taxa of uncertain status belonging to the family Ophioglossaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Ecological importance
Species of the Ophioglossaceae are specialized components of moist and seasonally moist ecosystems. Their presence is associated with suitable soil conditions, moisture and underground fungal communities.
The dependence of their gametophytes on symbiotic fungi demonstrates that protecting the species cannot be limited to the visible plant. It requires the conservation of soil structure, natural hydrology and the microorganisms living within the substrate.
The species may act as indicators of ecological continuity and the good condition of particular grassland, woodland or seasonally moist microhabitats.
Threats and protection
Members of the family are vulnerable to activities that alter natural moisture levels and soil structure. Potential threats include drainage, water abstraction, destruction of springs, intensive cultivation, deep ploughing, herbicide use and residential development.
Excessive grazing and heavy trampling can destroy the above-ground leaves before the spores mature. Conversely, the complete abandonment of some open habitats may result in the excessive development of tall, dense vegetation, reducing the available microhabitats.
Because the plants are small and seasonal, their absence during a single visit does not necessarily demonstrate their disappearance. Monitoring should be undertaken during the appropriate season and, ideally, over more than one year.
