Το Plants of the World Online αναγνωρίζει σήμερα 691 γένη, ενώ σύμφωνα με νεότερη εκτίμηση των Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, η οικογένεια περιλαμβάνει περίπου 29.500 είδη παγκοσμίως.

Text by George Konstantinou
The Orchidaceae, commonly known as the orchid family, belongs to the order Asparagales. It is one of the largest and most evolutionarily specialized families of flowering plants.
Plants of the World Online currently recognizes 691 genera, while a recent estimate by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, places the family at approximately 29,500 species worldwide. Orchids occur on every continent except Antarctica and reach their greatest diversity in tropical regions.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the Orchidaceae is represented on the island by 10 genera and 78 taxa. Of these, 43 are native non-endemic, 4 are endemic to Cyprus, 1 is alien or naturalized, 25 are hybrids and 5 are of uncertain status.
Morphology
The orchids of Cyprus are mainly perennial herbaceous geophytes. They survive the unfavourable season through underground tubers, rhizomes or fleshy roots and produce their above-ground parts when moisture and temperature conditions become suitable.
The leaves are simple, entire and generally parallel-veined. They may form a basal rosette or occur along the stem. In species such as Limodorum abortivum, the leaves are strongly reduced, and the plant depends to a considerable degree on its association with underground fungi.
The flowers are generally bilaterally symmetrical and consist of three sepals and three petals. One petal is modified into the labellum, which frequently has a distinctive shape, colour, indumentum or pattern and functions as a landing platform or visual and olfactory stimulus for pollinators.
The male and female reproductive organs are united into a specialized structure, the column. The pollen is generally concentrated into compact masses known as pollinia, which are transported as single units by pollinators.
The fruit is a capsule containing numerous extremely small seeds. The seeds lack sufficient stored nutrients and require the assistance of suitable fungi to germinate under natural conditions.
Mycorrhiza and germination
The relationship between orchids and fungi is fundamental to their life cycle. Following germination, the microscopic seed forms an early structure known as a protocorm. At this stage, it receives water, minerals and organic compounds through its symbiotic fungus.
Even adult green orchids frequently retain mycorrhizal relationships. In species with very little chlorophyll, such as Limodorum abortivum, dependence on fungi remains particularly strong.
For this reason, transplanting a wild orchid usually fails. Removing the plant damages its underground tubers or rhizomes and disrupts its relationship with the particular soil and symbiotic fungi.
Pollination
Orchids possess some of the most specialized pollination mechanisms in the plant kingdom. Many species offer nectar, while others attract insects without providing a food reward.
Species of Ophrys are well known for sexual deception. The labellum imitates the appearance, texture and scent of the female of particular insects. A male insect attempts to mate with the flower and carries the pollinia to another flower.
Highly specialized pollination contributes to the reproductive isolation of the taxa. However, it also permits natural hybrids to form when different taxa flower together and share or attract related pollinators.
Distribution and habitats in Cyprus
The orchids of Cyprus occur from coastal areas to the highest mountain zones. They grow in phrygana, maquis vegetation, pine forests, oak woodlands, forest clearings, grasslands, rocky slopes and traditional agricultural landscapes.
Some taxa are associated with wet meadows, springs, streams and marshy sites, including species of Dactylorhiza, Epipactis and certain Orchis. Others favour dry calcareous soils, low shrublands and open pine forests.
Flowering begins in winter for some species, reaches its peak in spring and continues in the mountains into summer. Spiranthes spiralis differs by flowering in autumn.

Genera of the Orchidaceae in Cyprus
The 10 genera recorded in the Cyprus checklist display different forms and ecological adaptations:
- Barlia comprises robust, early-flowering terrestrial orchids.
- Cephalanthera comprises woodland species with erect inflorescences.
- Dactylorhiza is frequently associated with wet meadows, springs and mountain habitats.
- Epipactis consists mainly of woodland or moisture-loving species.
- Limodorum includes orchids strongly dependent on mycorrhizal fungi.
- Ophrys is characterized by flowers that imitate insects and specialized pollination.
- Orchis includes a variety of tuberous terrestrial orchids.
- Platanthera includes species with fragrant flowers and long spurs.
- Serapias is characterized by its floral hood and elongated, tongue-like labellum.
- Spiranthes possesses small flowers arranged spirally around the flowering stem.
Ecological importance
Orchids participate in complex ecological networks involving plants, fungi and pollinating insects. Their survival depends on the conservation of all these interactions.
The flowers offer nectar or other rewards to certain pollinators, while other species employ visual, tactile or chemical deception. The presence of diverse orchids can indicate ecological diversity and favourable soil conditions.
Their underground organs allow the plants to survive the dry summer. Their emergence and flowering are strongly influenced by winter rainfall, temperature, shade, grazing and local soil conditions.
Threats and protection
The main threats include habitat destruction and fragmentation, residential and tourism development, intensive agriculture, herbicide use, road construction, drainage of wet habitats and excessively frequent fires.
Uprooting or transplanting wild orchids directly destroys the plants and generally fails because of their specialized relationship with soil fungi. Cutting the flowers prevents the production of fruits and seeds.
Particular attention is required for endemic taxa, small and isolated populations, species of wet habitats and sites supporting rare natural hybrids. Protection must cover the entire habitat, not only the visible flowering plants.
