Σύμφωνα με το Plants of the World Online, η οικογένεια περιλαμβάνει παγκοσμίως 99 αποδεκτά γένη και περίπου 2.060 είδη.

The Orobanchaceae, commonly known as the broomrape family, belongs to the order Lamiales. It is a particularly interesting family of flowering plants because almost all its members are root holoparasites or hemiparasites of other plants.
According to Plants of the World Online, the family comprises 99 accepted genera and approximately 2,060 species worldwide. It has an almost global distribution and includes large genera such as Pedicularis, Euphrasia, Castilleja and Orobanche.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the Orobanchaceae is represented on the island by 5 genera and 20 taxa. Of these, 16 are native non-endemic and 4 are endemic to Cyprus. No alien or naturalized taxa, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
Parasitic way of life
Members of the family connect with the roots of other plants through specialized organs known as haustoria. These penetrate the host’s vascular tissues and allow the parasite to absorb water, minerals and organic compounds.
Holoparasitic species, including most Orobanche and Cistanche, lack functional chlorophyll. They cannot carry out normal photosynthesis and depend completely on their host plant.
Hemiparasites, including Bellardia, Parentucellia and Odontites, possess green leaves and photosynthesize but obtain water and nutrients from the roots of neighbouring plants. They may parasitize a particular host or several different host species.
Morphology
Holoparasitic plants are usually yellowish, brown, reddish, violet or whitish. Their leaves are reduced to small scales because they do not require a developed photosynthetic surface.
The flowering stems emerge above the ground mainly for flowering and seed production. Their flowers are generally arranged in dense or loose spikes and possess tubular, two-lipped corollas.
Hemiparasitic members are green annual or perennial herbs. They possess opposite or alternate, frequently toothed leaves and flowers resembling those of many other members of the order Lamiales.
The fruit is a capsule containing numerous extremely small seeds. A single plant may produce a very large number of seeds, which can remain in the soil until a suitable host becomes available.
Seed germination
The seeds of many holoparasitic Orobanchaceae do not germinate merely in the presence of water. After an appropriate conditioning period in the soil, they respond to chemical substances released by the roots of a potential host.
Following germination, the young plant must reach a suitable root rapidly. It forms a haustorium and connects with the host’s vascular system. If no suitable root is found within a short distance, the young parasite usually dies.
Most of the early development takes place underground. The flowering stem emerges when the plant has accumulated sufficient resources to flower and reproduce.
Distribution and habitats in Cyprus
Members of the family occur in a wide variety of habitats, depending on the presence of suitable hosts. They may be found in phrygana, maquis vegetation, grasslands, woodland clearings, pine forests, agricultural land, coastal sites and mountain habitats.
Cistanche phelypaea is associated with dry, sandy and frequently saline environments, where it parasitizes the roots of shrubs adapted to these conditions.
Species of Orobanche may occur in natural ecosystems or cultivated land. Their presence and abundance depend on host distribution, rainfall, temperature and soil conditions.
The hemiparasitic Bellardia, Parentucellia and Odontites grow mainly in open herbaceous vegetation, grasslands, phrygana, roadsides and other sunny sites.

- Orobanche ramosa L. · Species
The Cypriot species of Orobanche are holoparasitic plants without functional chlorophyll. They differ in size, stem branching, colour, indumentum, bract and calyx morphology, corolla shape and the plants they use as hosts.
Their identification requires examination of fresh material because colour and certain other characteristics change rapidly after collection. Reliable identification frequently requires recording the probable host and carefully examining the floral characters.
Parentucellia
- Parentucellia latifolia subsp. flaviflora (Boiss.) Hand.-Mazz. · Subspecies
- Parentucellia latifolia (L.) Caruel subsp. latifolia · Subspecies
- Parentucellia viscosa (L.) Caruel · Species
Members of Parentucellia are green annual hemiparasitic herbs. They possess erect stems, opposite and usually toothed leaves and tubular flowers arranged in terminal spikes.
Parentucellia viscosa is characterized by its glandular, sticky indumentum and yellow flowers. The two subspecies of Parentucellia latifolia are distinguished partly by floral characters, colour and the form of the inflorescence.
Taxa endemic to Cyprus
Odontites
- Odontites cyprius Boiss. · Species
Odontites cyprius is a hemiparasitic species endemic to Cyprus. It is a green herb that photosynthesizes but connects with the roots of neighbouring plants through haustoria. It possesses narrow leaves and small flowers in terminal inflorescences.
Orobanche
- Orobanche chionistrae (Rätzel & al.) Domina · Species
- Orobanche cypria Reut. · Species
- Orobanche zosimae (M. J. Y. Foley) Domina · Species
These three species are holoparasites endemic to Cyprus. Their geographical distribution is linked to the occurrence of their appropriate host plants and particular habitats.
Because of their underground development and the brief presence of their flowering stems, they may not be visible every year. Their absence during a single visit does not necessarily indicate that the population has disappeared.
Alien or naturalized taxa
No alien or naturalized taxa of the family Orobanchaceae are recorded in the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus.
Hybrids
No hybrids of the family Orobanchaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Taxa of uncertain status
No taxa of uncertain status belonging to the family Orobanchaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Ecological importance
Parasitic plants are natural components of ecosystems. They influence the growth and competitive ability of their hosts and may increase plant diversity by limiting the dominance of certain vigorous plant species.
Hemiparasitic species often connect with more than one neighbouring plant. In this way, they participate in underground interaction networks and influence the distribution of water and nutrients within the plant community.
The flowers provide pollen or nectar for insects, while dried flowering stems and capsules create microhabitats for small invertebrates.
Agricultural importance
Some Orobanche species, particularly those parasitizing cultivated plants, can significantly reduce the growth and production of their hosts. Most of the damage occurs underground before the flowering stem becomes visible.
Their management is difficult because they produce numerous microscopic seeds capable of remaining in the soil for long periods. Preventing new seed production, using clean propagation material and applying appropriate crop-management practices are important control measures.
Agricultural control should target only problematic species and affected cultivated fields and should not result in the destruction of rare or endemic species in natural habitats.
Threats and protection
Threats differ according to the species and its host. They include habitat destruction, land-use change, intensive agriculture, herbicide use, residential development, fires and loss of host plants.
For endemic holoparasitic species, protecting only the visible flowering stem is insufficient. Their host populations, the soil and the entire plant community must be conserved.
Removing a flowering stem may not eliminate the entire underground parasite, but it prevents seed production. Collection of rare or endemic plants should be avoided.
