Το Plants of the World Online αναγνωρίζει σήμερα 5 γένη στην οικογένεια: Averrhoa, Biophytum, Dapania, Oxalis και Sarcotheca.
Oxalis
- Oxalis corniculata L. · Species

Oxalis
- Oxalis latifolia Kunth · Species
- Oxalis pes-caprae L. · Species

The Oxalidaceae, commonly known as the wood-sorrel family, belongs to the order Oxalidales. It comprises annual or perennial herbs, geophytes, shrubs and small trees.
Plants of the World Online currently recognizes 5 genera in the family: Averrhoa, Biophytum, Dapania, Oxalis and Sarcotheca. Overall, the family comprises approximately 900 species worldwide, most of which belong to the large genus Oxalis.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the Oxalidaceae is represented on the island by 1 genus and 3 taxa. One taxon is native non-endemic, while 2 taxa are alien or naturalized. No endemic taxa, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
Morphology
Members of the family display considerable variation in form and growth habit. The Cypriot species are small annual or perennial herbaceous wood-sorrels that grow either prostrate on the ground or from underground bulbs.
The leaves are alternate and generally compound. In the Cypriot species of Oxalis, they consist of three leaflets that are frequently heart-shaped or inversely triangular. Their form resembles clover, but wood-sorrels do not belong to the legume family.
The leaves display characteristic movements. They may fold at night, in cloudy weather, under intense sunlight or following mechanical stimulation. These movements result from changes in water pressure within specialized tissues at the bases of the leaflets.
The flowers are radially symmetrical and usually bisexual. They possess five sepals, five free petals, ten stamens and an ovary consisting of five carpels. The petals may be yellow, pink, purple or white.
Many species display heterostyly, the presence of different floral forms with styles and stamens of different lengths. This mechanism promotes cross-pollination.
Fruits and dispersal
The fruit of the herbaceous species is usually an elongated capsule. At maturity, it can open suddenly and project its seeds away from the parent plant.
The seeds frequently possess a fleshy outer layer that changes shape rapidly at maturity. This mechanical change contributes to the forceful ejection of the seed.
In the alien bulbous species, vegetative reproduction is often more important than seed production. Numerous small bulbs are transported with soil, agricultural tools, machinery, water and human activities.
Distribution and habitats
The Oxalidaceae has a broad worldwide distribution, with particularly high diversity in tropical and subtropical regions and southern Africa. The genus Oxalis occurs in many different climatic zones.
In Cyprus, members of the family occur in gardens, cultivated and irrigated land, roadsides, old walls, pavements, uncultivated ground, olive groves, orchards and other natural or human-influenced sites.
Oxalis corniculata is a small prostrate plant capable of establishing itself in crevices, flower beds and disturbed soils. Oxalis latifolia and Oxalis pes-caprae are bulbous geophytes that can form dense colonies.
Native non-endemic taxa
Oxalis
- Oxalis corniculata L. · Species
Oxalis corniculata, commonly known as creeping woodsorrel, is a small, prostrate annual or short-lived perennial herb. Its slender stems spread across the soil surface and frequently root at the nodes.
The leaves consist of three heart-shaped leaflets and may be green or display purple colouration. The small flowers possess five yellow petals and are borne on slender stalks.
The fruit is a narrow, elongated capsule that projects the small seeds when mature. This effective method of dispersal helps the plant colonize new disturbed sites rapidly.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the species is recorded on the island as native non-endemic.
Endemic taxa
No endemic taxa of the family Oxalidaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Alien or naturalized taxa
Oxalis
- Oxalis latifolia Kunth · Species
Oxalis latifolia, commonly known as broadleaf woodsorrel, is a perennial bulbous geophyte native to tropical and subtropical America.
Its leaves consist of three broad, inversely triangular to heart-shaped leaflets. The flowers are pink to purple and borne in inflorescences rising above the leaves.
The species produces underground bulbs and numerous smaller daughter bulbs. It can spread rapidly in gardens and cultivated or irrigated land. Removing only the leaves does not eliminate the plant because the bulbs remain alive in the soil.
- Oxalis pes-caprae L. · Species
Oxalis pes-caprae, commonly known as Bermuda buttercup or African wood-sorrel, is a perennial bulbous geophyte native to Namibia and South Africa.
Its leaves consist of three large, heart-shaped leaflets borne on long stalks. The flowers are large, funnel-shaped and bright yellow and occur in groups on long flowering stems.
In Cyprus, it grows during the wet season and flowers mainly in winter and spring. As the summer drought begins, its above-ground parts die back while the underground bulbs remain dormant.
The species reproduces effectively through numerous small bulbs. It can form extensive and dense stands in cultivated land, olive groves, uncultivated ground, roadsides and natural sites.
Hybrids
No hybrids of the family Oxalidaceae are recorded in the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus.
Taxa of uncertain status
No taxa of uncertain status belonging to the family Oxalidaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Ecological importance
The flowers of wood-sorrels provide pollen and nectar for bees, flies and other pollinating insects. The small plants may also provide cover for invertebrates at the soil surface.
Oxalis corniculata forms part of the low vegetation of disturbed and human-influenced habitats. Its prostrate stems can cover bare soil and locally reduce erosion.
Alien bulbous species may have negative ecological effects when they form dense stands. Their extensive cover can limit the light and space available to small native annual plants.
Oxalic acid
Members of the family contain oxalic acid and soluble oxalates, which are responsible for the characteristic sour taste of their leaves and stems.
Although small quantities of some wood-sorrels have traditionally been consumed, eating large quantities may be harmful. Particular caution is required for people with kidney disorders or a predisposition to kidney stones.
This information is provided solely for general knowledge and does not constitute a recommendation for consumption or medicinal use.
Spread and management of the alien species
Oxalis latifolia and Oxalis pes-caprae spread mainly through underground bulbs. The movement of soil containing small bulbs is one of the principal ways in which they reach new sites.
Mechanical cultivation can disperse the bulbs instead of eliminating the plants. Effective management requires repeated removal before the plants replenish the reserves of their underground organs and careful handling of contaminated soil.
In natural habitats, management should avoid damaging native vegetation or causing further soil disturbance.
Threats and protection
The family as a whole does not face a single level of threat in Cyprus. The native Oxalis corniculata is adapted to disturbed sites and can survive in strongly human-influenced environments.
In contrast, the two alien bulbous species require monitoring, especially when they spread into natural sites supporting diverse communities of small annual plants.
Avoiding the transfer of soil and plant material from infested locations helps limit their further spread.
