Σύμφωνα με το Plants of the World Online, η οικογένεια περιλαμβάνει παγκοσμίως μόνο 1 αποδεκτό γένος, το Paeonia, και 37 αποδεκτά είδη.
Paeonia
- Paeonia mascula (L.) Mill. subsp. mascula · Subspecies

Text by George Konstantinou
The Paeoniaceae, commonly known as the peony family, belongs to the order Saxifragales. It is a small and distinctive family of flowering plants comprising perennial herbs and deciduous shrubs with large and conspicuous flowers.
According to Plants of the World Online, the family contains only 1 accepted genus, Paeonia, and 37 accepted species worldwide. Its natural distribution extends from Europe and northwestern Africa to temperate Asia, as well as western North America.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the Paeoniaceae is represented on the island by 1 genus and 1 taxon. This is the native non-endemic subspecies Paeonia mascula subsp. mascula. No endemic, alien or naturalized taxa, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
Morphology
Members of the family are perennial herbs or deciduous shrubs. The herbaceous species survive the unfavourable season through strong, fleshy roots and underground buds. Their above-ground parts emerge again during the appropriate growing season.
The stems are erect and generally not strongly branched. The leaves are alternate, without stipules and deeply divided into lobes or separate leaflets. They frequently form dense foliage beneath the flowers.
The flowers are large, radially symmetrical, bisexual and generally solitary at the ends of the stems. They possess several sepals, five or more petals and numerous stamens.
The ovary is superior and consists of two to several free carpels. Following fertilization, each carpel develops into a separate fruit known as a follicle.
The mature follicles open along one suture and reveal the relatively large seeds. Mature fertile seeds are usually dark blue, black or brownish-black, while infertile structures may be bright red.
Distribution and habitats
The genus Paeonia has a natural distribution in eastern, central and southern Europe, the Mediterranean, northwestern Africa, temperate Asia and parts of western North America.
Most species grow in temperate or mountainous environments, including forests, woodland margins, shrublands, grasslands, rocky slopes and mountain clearings.
Paeonia mascula has a natural distribution extending from Europe and the Mediterranean to parts of western Asia. Cyprus is included within the natural geographical range of the species and the subspecies mascula.
In Cyprus, the peony is associated mainly with mountainous and relatively cool habitats. It occurs in forests, woodland margins, clearings, shrublands and shaded or partly shaded slopes with relatively deep soil and sufficient seasonal moisture.
Native non-endemic taxa
Paeonia
- Paeonia mascula (L.) Mill. subsp. mascula · Subspecies
Paeonia mascula subsp. mascula, commonly known as wild peony, is a robust perennial herb with fleshy roots and annual erect stems.
During winter, its above-ground parts are absent or remain limited, while new stems develop from underground buds in spring. The plant may form compact clumps with several flowering stems.
The leaves are large, green and deeply divided into broad lobes or leaflets. Their lower surfaces may be paler and display varying degrees of hairiness.
The flowers are large and generally solitary at the ends of the stems. Their broad petals are pink, purple, reddish-purple or deep red. Numerous yellow stamens occupy the centre of the flower and create a strong colour contrast.
Following flowering, several fleshy follicles develop. At maturity, they open and reveal the dark fertile seeds and frequently bright-red infertile structures.
Endemic taxa
No endemic taxa of the family Paeoniaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Alien or naturalized taxa
No alien or naturalized taxa of the family Paeoniaceae are recorded in the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus.
Hybrids
No hybrids of the family Paeoniaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Taxa of uncertain status
No taxa of uncertain status belonging to the family Paeoniaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Life cycle
The wild peony is a long-lived perennial plant. During the warm and dry period, it survives through its underground organs, while new stem growth begins when temperature and moisture conditions become suitable.
Flowering occurs in spring and may vary according to elevation, exposure, temperature and rainfall. Each flower remains open for a relatively limited period.
The development of a new mature plant from seed is a slow process. The seeds may possess complex dormancy and require successive periods of suitable temperatures before germination is completed and a young shoot appears.
Pollination and dispersal
The large, brightly coloured flowers attract bees, beetles and other insects. Their numerous stamens produce abundant pollen, which is the principal reward for many floral visitors.
Pollen transfer between different plants contributes to fertilization and the production of viable seeds. Reproductive success is influenced by the number of flowering plants, pollinator presence and weather conditions.
The relatively large seeds are not carried over long distances by wind. They mainly fall near the parent plant, while gravity, water movement and possibly animals can assist their local dispersal.
Ecological importance
The peony is a conspicuous component of mountain and woodland flora. Its flowers provide pollen for various insects, while its foliage contributes to the structure of the herbaceous woodland understorey.
As a long-lived geophyte, it may remain in the same location for many years. Its populations reflect the long-term continuity of suitable habitat and the absence of severe soil disturbance.
Its underground organs store water and nutrients, enabling the plant to survive summer drought and cold mountain periods.
Ornamental and cultural importance
Peonies have been cultivated for centuries for their large and impressive flowers. Numerous ornamental cultivars have been developed with different flower colours, sizes and forms.
The name Paeonia is associated with Paeon in ancient Greek tradition. Peonies are also mentioned in historical texts concerning traditional plant uses.
Historical or traditional references do not demonstrate that the plant is safe to use. Different plant parts contain bioactive substances and should not be consumed or used medicinally without appropriate scientific and medical guidance.
Threats and protection
Local populations may be affected by uprooting, flower cutting, seed collection, destruction of the woodland understorey, road construction and severe soil disturbance.
Fires of high intensity or frequency can affect the soil and underground organs. Changes in woodland structure and shade conditions may also alter habitat quality.
Removing a mature plant is particularly damaging because its replacement through natural germination and growth from seed takes many years. Protection should cover flowering plants as well as young or temporarily dormant underground individuals.
