Το Plants of the World Online

Hypecoum
- Hypecoum torulosum Dahl · Species
Papaver
- Papaver dubium L. · Species

The Papaveraceae, commonly known as the poppy family, belongs to the order Ranunculales. It consists mainly of annual, biennial or perennial herbs and, less frequently, shrubs or small trees.
Plants of the World Online currently recognizes 43 genera in the family, which comprises approximately 800 species worldwide. Its best-known genera include Papaver, Fumaria, Corydalis, Glaucium, Eschscholzia and Meconopsis.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the Papaveraceae is represented on the island by 8 genera and 28 taxa. Of these, 20 are native non-endemic, 4 are endemic to Cyprus, 2 are alien or naturalized and 2 are of uncertain status. No hybrids are recorded.
Morphology
Members of the family are generally herbaceous plants with alternate leaves lacking stipules. The leaves may be simple, lobed or deeply divided. In Fumaria, Corydalis and Ceratocapnos, they are frequently delicate and finely divided.
Many members possess milky or coloured sap. In Papaver, the sap is usually white, while in Glaucium it may be yellow or orange. The sap contains various chemical compounds and alkaloids.
The flowers are usually bisexual. In poppies, they are radially symmetrical, with two early-falling sepals, four large petals, numerous stamens and a superior ovary.
In Fumaria, Corydalis and Ceratocapnos, the flowers are smaller, bilaterally symmetrical and usually spurred. They are arranged in racemose inflorescences and pollinated mainly by insects.
The fruit may be a capsule, an elongated horn-like fruit or a small one-seeded fruit. In Papaver, the mature capsule releases numerous small seeds through pores beneath the stigmatic disc.
Distribution and habitats
The Papaveraceae has a broad worldwide distribution and reaches its greatest diversity in temperate and subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Its species occur in grasslands, steppes, forests, rocky slopes, deserts, cultivated land and coastal habitats.
In Cyprus, members of the family grow in cultivated and uncultivated ground, roadsides, traditional fields, phrygana, shrublands, rocky slopes, beaches, dunes, woodland sites and mountain habitats.
Many species are winter or spring annuals. They germinate following the first rains, grow during the wet season and complete flowering and seed production before the summer drought.

According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the species is recorded as alien or naturalized.
Hybrids
No hybrids of the family Papaveraceae are recorded in the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus.
Taxa of uncertain status
Hypecoum
- Hypecoum torulosum Dahl · Species
Papaver
- Papaver dubium L. · Species
These two species are recorded in the organized checklist as taxa of uncertain status in Cyprus. They should remain in this category until sufficient evidence permits a reliable assessment of their presence and status.
Pollination and dispersal
Poppy flowers generally do not produce nectar but offer abundant pollen. They attract bees, beetles, flies and other insects that transfer pollen between flowers.
The small flowers of Fumaria, Corydalis and Ceratocapnos possess a more specialized structure and attract insects capable of reaching inside the corolla.
In Papaver, seeds are released through pores beneath the stigmatic disc when the dry capsule is moved by wind or animals. The capsule therefore functions as a natural dispersal container.
Ecological importance
Poppies and other members of the family provide important pollen resources for many insects. They form part of the flora of traditional fields, grasslands, phrygana and open natural ecosystems.
Annual species rapidly use the winter rainfall and cover bare or recently disturbed soils. After completing their life cycles, they add organic material to the soil.
The endemic poppies and Corydalis rutifolia form a distinctive part of the natural heritage of Cyprus and increase the phytogeographical and genetic uniqueness of the island’s flora.
Chemical substances and safety
Many members of the Papaveraceae contain potent bioactive alkaloids. Their composition and concentration differ considerably among genera, species and plant parts.
Papaver somniferum is historically associated with pharmaceutical and other uses, but its latex and immature plant parts contain powerful substances. Its cultivation and use may also be subject to legal restrictions.
No wild member of the family should be consumed or used medicinally without reliable identification and appropriate scientific and medical guidance.
Threats and protection
Local populations may be affected by agricultural intensification, herbicide use, loss of traditional fields, residential development, road construction and alteration of coastal or rocky habitats.
The endemic taxa require particular attention because their entire global distribution is confined to Cyprus. Protecting their known sites, natural substrates and ecological processes is essential.
Collecting endemic or rare plants or destroying them before seed production can significantly affect small local populations.
