Limonium ammochostianum Erben & al.
Limonium cyprium (Meikle) Hand & Buttler
Limonium karpasiticum Kefalas & al.
Limonium mucronulatum (H. Lindb.) Greuter & Burdet
Limonium paralimniticum Christodoulou & al.

Text by George Konstantinou
The family Plumbaginaceae, commonly known as the leadwort family or plumbago family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Caryophyllales. According to a recent global taxonomic treatment, it comprises 26 genera and approximately 1,179 accepted species.
The family has an almost cosmopolitan distribution but displays particularly high diversity in the Mediterranean, western and central Asia and other regions with dry, saline or coastal habitats. Many species are specialized halophytes capable of surviving in soils with high salt concentrations.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, the family Plumbaginaceae is represented in Cyprus by 2 genera and 12 taxa. Of these, 6 are native non-endemic, 5 are endemic to Cyprus and one is a hybrid.
Morphological characteristics
The members of the family are mainly annual or perennial herbs, small shrubs and, less commonly, climbing plants. The leaves are simple, without stipules and generally entire. They may form a basal rosette or develop along the stems.
The flowers are generally bisexual, radially symmetrical and five-merous. The calyx consists of five united sepals and is frequently membranous, coloured or persistent during fruiting. In some genera it bears glandular hairs.
The corolla consists of five petals that may be free or united at the base. There are five stamens and a superior, single-chambered ovary containing one ovule.
The fruit is generally a small capsule or achene and frequently remains enclosed within the persistent calyx.
Genera of Cyprus
The genus Limonium includes mainly perennial or annual herbs, frequently with their leaves concentrated in a basal rosette. The highly branched inflorescences carry numerous small flowers, usually in shades of violet, pink or white.
The genus Plumbago includes herbs or small shrubs with leafy stems and tubular flowers. The calyx possesses characteristic sticky glandular hairs that can trap small insects, although the plant is not considered truly insectivorous.
Distribution and habitats in Cyprus
Most Cypriot species of Limonium are associated with coastal and saline habitats. They occur on rocky shores, sea cliffs, salt marshes, salt lakes, coastal plains, sandy sites and depressions affected by sea spray or periodic flooding.
These plants possess adaptations allowing them to tolerate high salinity, strong winds, intense solar radiation, drought and limited freshwater availability.
Plumbago europaea generally occurs in dry, rocky and disturbed places, along roadsides, at field margins, in shrublands and near old settlements or ruins.

Endemic species of Cyprus
Plumbaginaceae displays a significant degree of endemism in Cyprus. All five endemic species belong to the genus Limonium, a genus known for pronounced local differentiation and the presence of numerous species with extremely restricted geographical ranges.
Limonium ammochostianum Erben & al.
Limonium ammochostianum is a species endemic to Cyprus associated with coastal habitats in the wider Famagusta area. It grows in places influenced by salinity, sea spray and the particular conditions of the coastal environment.
Limonium cyprium (Meikle) Hand & Buttler
Limonium cyprium is an endemic species of the Cypriot flora. Like other Cypriot members of the genus, it is adapted to open coastal or saline habitats and has a restricted global distribution.
Limonium karpasiticum Kefalas & al.
Limonium karpasiticum is an endemic species associated with the Karpasia Peninsula. Its extremely restricted distribution increases the importance of protecting the coastal sites in which it survives.
Limonium mucronulatum (H. Lindb.) Greuter & Burdet
Limonium mucronulatum is another endemic Cypriot species adapted to the difficult conditions of coastal habitats. It is characterized by morphological features of its leaves, branches and flowers that distinguish it from related species.
Limonium paralimniticum Christodoulou & al.
Limonium paralimniticum is a narrow endemic of Cyprus described from the Paralimni area. Its restricted distribution and dependence on specialized habitats make it particularly vulnerable to changes in land use.
Hybridization
The natural hybrid Limonium ammochostianum × Limonium virgatum is recorded in Cyprus. Hybridization is a frequent and evolutionarily important phenomenon in the genus Limonium.
The formation of hybrids is facilitated when related species grow close together and flower during the same period. Hybrid plants may display morphological characteristics intermediate between the parental taxa.
Their identification can be difficult and frequently requires detailed morphological examination, comparison with the parental plants and, in some cases, cytological or molecular analyses.
Ecology
The flowers of the family attract bees, small butterflies, flies and other insects. The dense inflorescences of Limonium can provide an important source of nectar and pollen in coastal ecosystems, particularly during dry periods.
Species of Limonium contribute to soil stabilization and the maintenance of vegetation in saline and windswept sites where few other plants can survive.
Many species possess glands on their leaves through which excess salt is excreted. They may also reduce water loss through rigid or fleshy leaves and the seasonal reduction of their leaf surface.
Uses
Some species of Limonium, internationally known as sea-lavenders or statices, are cultivated as ornamental plants. Their inflorescences retain their form and frequently their colour after drying and are used in arrangements of dried flowers.
Limonium sinuatum is one of the best-known ornamental species of the family and is cultivated in many countries in various colour forms.
Some species of Plumbago are also cultivated as ornamentals. However, plants of this genus contain bioactive substances and should not be used for therapeutic purposes without specialist knowledge.
Threats and protection
Coastal members of the Plumbaginaceae are particularly vulnerable because many occupy small and isolated areas. The principal threats include residential and tourist development, road construction, drainage or alteration of saline wetlands, waste disposal, uncontrolled vehicle movement and intense human presence.
Mechanical beach cleaning, the removal of natural vegetation and interventions on rocky coasts can destroy small populations before they have even been accurately documented.
Sea-level rise, coastal erosion, changes in rainfall and prolonged droughts represent additional threats associated with climate change.
The endemic species require accurate population mapping, systematic monitoring, habitat protection and the conservation of seeds in suitable genetic-material banks. Particular care is needed to ensure that small populations and natural hybrids are not destroyed by construction projects or inappropriate management.
