Polypodium

Polypodium cambricum L.

The family Polypodiaceae, commonly known as the polypody family, is a family of ferns belonging to the order Polypodiales. Under its modern taxonomic circumscription, it comprises approximately 64–65 genera and 1,650 species worldwide.

The members of the family are seedless vascular plants. They do not produce flowers, fruits or seeds but reproduce by spores. The family displays its greatest diversity in tropical and subtropical regions, where many species grow as epiphytes on tree trunks and branches.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Polypodiaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon, the native non-endemic Polypodium cambricum.

Morphological characteristics

The members of the family are perennial ferns with creeping or, less commonly, erect rhizomes. The rhizomes are generally covered with brown scales and grow upon or within rock crevices, on walls, in soil or on tree trunks.

The leaves of ferns are known as fronds. They consist of the stalk and blade and may be entire, pinnatifid or pinnate. Young fronds are initially coiled and gradually unfurl as they develop.

Groups of sporangia, known as sori, develop on the lower surface of mature fronds. In the genus Polypodium, the sori are generally round, arranged in two rows along the sides of the midvein of each lobe and are not covered by a true protective covering or indusium.

Numerous, extremely small spores are produced inside the sporangia. When mature, the sporangia open and the spores are dispersed mainly by wind.

Distribution and habitats in Cyprus

Polypodium cambricum has a native range extending from northwestern Europe to the Mediterranean and the Caucasus. Cyprus forms part of the species’ natural range.

In Cyprus, it occurs mainly in shaded or partly shaded rocky places, rock crevices, old walls, banks, woodland and sites beneath shrubs or trees. It prefers microhabitats in which moisture, soil and organic matter accumulate.

It may grow on limestone or other rocks, depending on local conditions. Its presence is influenced mainly by shade, moisture and the existence of suitable crevices in which the rhizome can become established.

Native non-endemic taxa

Polypodium
  1. Polypodium cambricum L. – Species – Native non-endemic

No endemic, alien or naturalized taxa, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status belonging to the family Polypodiaceae are recorded in the Cypriot flora.

Polypodium cambricum L.

Polypodium cambricum is a perennial fern with a thick, creeping rhizome covered with brown or golden-brown scales. Individual fronds develop from the rhizome at short distances from one another.

The fronds generally have a triangular to elongated outline and are deeply pinnatifid. The lobes occur on both sides of the midvein and may possess entire or slightly toothed margins.

The species frequently displays seasonal growth adapted to the Mediterranean climate. New fronds appear following the autumn and winter rains and remain green during the cooler and wetter period.

As temperatures and summer drought increase, the fronds may dry out. The underground or protected rhizome remains alive and allows the plant to grow again when suitable moisture conditions return.

The sori are round and initially yellowish to orange. As they mature, they become browner. The form of the fronds, rhizome scales and spores is used to distinguish the species from other related ferns.

Life cycle and reproduction

The life cycle of Polypodium cambricum includes two different generations. The visible plant with fronds is the sporophyte, which produces spores inside the sporangia.

When a spore reaches a suitable moist substrate, it may germinate and form a small, thin and generally heart-shaped gametophyte, known as a prothallus.

The reproductive organs develop on the prothallus. Water is necessary for the male reproductive cells to move towards the female cell and for fertilization to take place.

Following fertilization, a new sporophyte develops. The young fern initially depends on the prothallus but soon forms its own roots and fronds.

Ecology

Polypodium cambricum is a characteristic plant of shaded rocks, old walls and moist microhabitats. Its creeping rhizome allows the plant to expand gradually through suitable crevices.

The fronds contribute to the retention of organic material and moisture in small rock depressions. Together with mosses, lichens and other small plants, it participates in the creation of microhabitats for invertebrates and microorganisms.

Seasonal summer dormancy is an important adaptation to the Mediterranean climate. The plant reduces water loss during the driest period while keeping its protected rhizome alive.

The spores can be transported over long distances by wind. However, the establishment of a new plant requires a suitable moist and protected microenvironment.

Taxonomic difficulties

The genus Polypodium includes morphologically similar species, subspecies and hybrids. Their identification may be difficult when based only on the general appearance of the fronds.

Reliable distinction may require examination of the rhizome scales, the form and dimensions of the spores, the sporangia and details of the blade. Cytological or molecular methods are used in some cases.

Polypodium cambricum has also been reported in the past under different taxonomic interpretations or as part of broader groups of related ferns. The name Polypodium cambricum L. is followed in the checklist of Cyprus.

Uses and precautions

Various species of Polypodium have been used traditionally in different countries. The rhizomes of certain species have a characteristic flavour and are mentioned in historical botanical or medicinal sources.

Traditional uses of related species do not mean that all species possess the same properties or are safe. Wild ferns should not be collected or used without correct identification and specialist guidance.

Wild plants should not be uprooted for transplantation because removing the rhizome destroys the entire plant and may affect small local populations.

Threats and protection

Populations of the species may be locally affected by the destruction of rocky sites, removal of natural vegetation, land clearance, fires and development projects.

The repair or cleaning of old stone walls involving the complete removal of vegetation may destroy plants that required many years to become established.

Prolonged drought and reduced moisture availability resulting from climate change may restrict suitable microhabitats, particularly in warmer and drier regions.

The conservation of shaded rocky sites, old walls, natural banks and woodland microhabitats contributes to the protection of the species. Photography should be carried out without removing plants or damaging the rhizome.
