Portulaca
Portulaca oleracea L.

The family Portulacaceae, commonly known as the purslane family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Caryophyllales. Under its modern, narrow taxonomic circumscription, it comprises 1 accepted genus, Portulaca, and approximately 115 species worldwide.
Under older taxonomic approaches, the family included approximately 20 genera and 500 species. Based on more recent morphological and molecular evidence, many of these genera were transferred to the families Montiaceae, Didiereaceae, Anacampserotaceae and Talinaceae.
The modern Portulacaceae has an almost cosmopolitan distribution but displays greater diversity in warm, dry and semi-arid regions of the world.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Portulacaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 1 taxon, the native non-endemic Portulaca oleracea.
Morphological characteristics
The members of the family are mainly annual or perennial succulent herbs and, less commonly, small subshrubs. The stems may be creeping, spreading, ascending or erect and frequently have a reddish colour.
The leaves are simple, entire and succulent, without stipules. They are arranged alternately, oppositely or in small groups. Their succulent texture allows water storage and contributes to the plants’ survival during periods of drought.
The flowers are bisexual and radially symmetrical. The calyx generally consists of two sepals, while the corolla usually has five petals, although their number may vary. The flowers are frequently yellow, pink, orange, red or white.
The stamens may be few or numerous. The ovary is single-chambered and contains numerous ovules.
The fruit is generally a capsule that opens transversely, with its upper part functioning as a lid. This type of fruit is known as a pyxis. The seeds are numerous, small and frequently black or dark brown.
Distribution and habitats in Cyprus
Portulaca oleracea occurs throughout almost the whole of Cyprus, from coastal regions to semi-montane zones where warm, open and disturbed soils are present.
It grows in gardens, vegetable gardens, orchards, cultivated and irrigated fields, roadsides, pavements, cracks in paved surfaces, courtyards, heaps of soil and other human-influenced sites.
It may also occur in natural or semi-natural open places, particularly in sandy or gravelly soils that retain some moisture during its growing period.
It is a warmth-loving plant and develops mainly from late spring to autumn. In irrigated sites, it may continue growing and flowering during the warmest and driest months.
The taxon of the family Portulacaceae in Cyprus
Native non-endemic taxa
Portulaca
- Portulaca oleracea L. – Species – Native non-endemic
No endemic, alien or naturalized taxa, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status belonging to the family Portulacaceae are recorded in the Cypriot flora.
Portulaca oleracea L.
Portulaca oleracea, commonly known as common purslane, is an annual or, less commonly, biennial semi-succulent plant. It has a strong taproot and numerous creeping or spreading stems, which frequently form dense, circular mats over the ground.
The stems are smooth, succulent and generally green to reddish. They can root at the nodes when they come into contact with moist soil.
The leaves are small, succulent, smooth and generally obovate or spoon-shaped. They are broader towards the apex and narrower towards the base and are frequently concentrated near the ends of the stems.
The flowers are small, yellow and usually have five petals. They open mainly during the bright hours of the day and may remain closed when the weather is cloudy or solar radiation is limited.
The fruit is a small pyxis. When mature, its upper part separates like a lid and releases numerous small, black and glossy seeds.
Adaptations to drought
Portulaca oleracea is particularly well adapted to high temperatures and limited water availability. Its succulent stems and leaves store water and reduce the effects of temporary drought.
The species possesses an unusual photosynthetic ability. It can combine features of C4 photosynthesis with crassulacean acid metabolism, known as CAM, depending on environmental conditions.
Under favourable conditions, it functions mainly as a C4 plant, efficiently utilizing intense light and high temperatures. When it experiences severe drought, it can activate CAM metabolism to a greater degree, reducing water loss.
This physiological flexibility contributes to its ability to survive in warm and frequently disturbed environments.
Reproduction and dispersal
The plant reproduces mainly by seeds. A single developed plant can produce a large number of fruits and thousands of extremely small seeds.
The seeds can remain viable in the soil for a long period. They germinate when suitable conditions of temperature, moisture and light are available.
Dispersal takes place through rainwater and irrigation water, the movement of soil, agricultural machinery, tools, footwear and together with plant or cultivation material.
Segments of the succulent stems may also survive and take root when they remain on moist soil. For this reason, simply cutting or superficially removing the plants does not always prevent their re-establishment.
Ecology
Common purslane is a characteristic plant of warm, open and disturbed soils. It grows rapidly following rain or irrigation and covers bare surfaces before larger plants become established.
Its small yellow flowers are visited by bees, flies and other small insects that collect pollen or nectar. Self-pollination may also take place.
The dense creeping stems provide shade at the soil surface, temporarily reduce evaporation and create cover for small invertebrates.
In cultivated land, it can function as a weed because it competes with cultivated plants for water, space and nutrients. However, it is also part of the herbaceous biodiversity of traditional agricultural landscapes.
Dietary and traditional uses
Portulaca oleracea is used as an edible wild green in many countries. The young leaves and tender stems are consumed raw or cooked and have a characteristic slightly sour or salty taste.
The plant contains water, dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. It has also been used in various traditional practices.
Despite its widespread use as food, it may contain significant quantities of oxalates. Excessive consumption may not be suitable for people with certain health conditions.
Plants collected for consumption should not come from roadsides, polluted soils, sprayed crops or places where pesticides may have been used. Safe and correct identification is always required.
Taxonomic complexity
Portulaca oleracea displays great morphological and genetic diversity. In some taxonomic studies, it is treated as a complex of related forms or microspecies distinguished mainly by microscopic characteristics of the seeds.
The surface form of the seeds, their projections, tubercles and the arrangement of the seed-coat cells are examined with magnifying or electron microscopes.
Different forms of the complex have been reported from Cyprus and the wider region. However, according to our organized checklist, the family is represented by one taxon under the accepted name Portulaca oleracea L.
The presence of names for microspecies in other sources does not alter the number or taxonomic treatment followed in the present checklist of the Cypriot flora.
Threats and protection
Portulaca oleracea is a widespread and adaptable plant and does not generally face significant threats in Cyprus.
Local populations may be affected by herbicide use, intensive soil cultivation and the complete removal of spontaneous vegetation from agricultural and urban areas.
Because the species frequently occurs as a weed, special protection measures are not generally required. However, the rational management of agricultural landscapes and the reduction of indiscriminate herbicide use benefit biodiversity as a whole.
Collection for consumption should be limited and carried out only in clean and safe locations, without damaging other plants or habitats.
