Το Angiosperm Phylogeny Website αναφέρει περίπου 161 γένη και 1.815 είδη, ενώ το Plants of the World Online των Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew αναγνωρίζει σήμερα 148 αποδεκτά γένη.

Haplophyllum buxbaumii
Ruta chalepensis

Text by George Konstantinou
The family Rutaceae, known as the rue or citrus family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Sapindales. It includes mainly trees and shrubs, but also herbs, such as the two native species recorded in the flora of Cyprus.
The family has a worldwide distribution, with most of its diversity occurring in tropical and subtropical regions. Estimates of its size differ according to the taxonomic approach. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Website reports approximately 161 genera and 1,815 species, while Plants of the World Online of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently recognizes 148 accepted genera.
The family includes the economically important genus Citrus, which comprises oranges, lemons, mandarins, citrons, limes and grapefruits. Cultivated citrus trees are not, however, included among the wild or naturalized taxa of the family in the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus.
According to the checklist, the family Rutaceae is represented in Cyprus by 2 genera and 2 taxa. Both are native non-endemic species. No endemic, alien, naturalized, hybrid or uncertain-status taxa of the family are recorded.
General characteristics
The members of Rutaceae display considerable morphological diversity. They may be aromatic herbs, shrubs or large trees. Many species are characterized by a strong smell, released when the leaves, stems or fruits are damaged.
The smell is produced by essential oils contained within specialized secretory glands. In the leaves of many woody species, these glands appear as small translucent dots when the leaf is viewed against the light.
The leaves are usually alternate or opposite and may be simple or compound. They generally lack stipules. In the Cypriot genera Haplophyllum and Ruta, the leaves are herbaceous, often glaucous or blue-green and divided into narrow lobes or leaflets.
The flowers are usually bisexual and actinomorphic, although some members of the family may display bilateral symmetry. They generally consist of four or five sepals and an equal number of free petals.
The stamens may be equal to or twice the number of petals, while a nectar-producing disc is often present at their base. The ovary is usually superior and consists of two to five fused or partially free carpels.
The fruits display considerable diversity. They may be capsules, follicles, drupes, berries or specialized fleshy fruits, such as the hesperidium of citrus fruits.
Chemical substances and aromatic glands
Rutaceae is known for the great diversity of secondary chemical compounds produced by its members. These include essential oils, alkaloids, coumarins, furanocoumarins, flavonoids and various terpenoids.
These compounds protect the plants against herbivorous animals and pathogens. At the same time, they are responsible for the aromas, bitter tastes and several of the traditional or pharmaceutical uses of the plants.
Certain substances may cause toxic or photosensitizing reactions in humans. Strongly aromatic species of the family should therefore not automatically be considered safe for consumption or medicinal use.
The family Rutaceae in Cyprus
The two Cypriot species are aromatic herbs adapted to dry and warm Mediterranean conditions. They occur mainly in open places, phrygana, scrub, rocky slopes, dry grasslands, along roadsides and on disturbed soils.
The glaucous or blue-green leaf surface, narrow lobes and production of essential oils are characteristics associated with survival in areas with intense solar radiation and prolonged summer drought.
The aerial parts may dry after the reproductive period has been completed, while the seeds or underground perennial sections allow the plants to survive until the next rainy period.

The Cypriot species
Haplophyllum buxbaumii
Haplophyllum buxbaumii is an aromatic perennial herb or small subshrub. It has glaucous or blue-green leaves and small yellowish flowers.
It grows mainly in dry and open places, on rocky slopes, in phrygana, on banks, in grasslands and on disturbed soils. It is adapted to intense sunlight, low summer moisture and poor soils.
The genus Haplophyllum includes species with a variety of alkaloids and other bioactive compounds. The plant should not be used as food or traditional medicine without reliable scientific identification and specialist guidance.
Ruta chalepensis
Ruta chalepensis is a perennial, strongly aromatic herb or small subshrub. It has glaucous, deeply divided leaves and yellowish flowers formed in branched inflorescences.
It occurs in phrygana, scrub, on rocky slopes, along roadsides, in dry agricultural areas, around old ruins and in other open or disturbed habitats.
Its strong smell is produced by essential oils and other chemical compounds contained in the secretory glands of the leaves and stems.
Pollination and dispersal
The flowers of the Cypriot species produce nectar and pollen and are visited by bees, flies, beetles and other insects.
The yellow colour of the petals and the nectar-producing disc act as signals for pollinators. The transfer of pollen between different plants contributes to the genetic diversity of populations.
The fruits are dry capsules that open when mature and release the seeds. The seeds usually fall near the parent plant but may be transported over short distances by water, surface soil, animals and human activities.
Adaptations to the Mediterranean climate
The Cypriot Rutaceae species display several adaptations to dry conditions:
- a glaucous or waxy leaf surface,
- deep division of the leaf blade into narrow lobes,
- reduced leaf surface,
- secretory glands containing essential oils,
- a perennial woody or semi-woody base,
- tolerance of stony and poor soils,
- and a seasonal reduction of vegetative activity during the dry summer.
The glaucous surface reflects part of the solar radiation, while the narrow lobes limit the surface through which water is lost.
Ecological importance
The flowers provide nectar and pollen to various insects during their flowering period. The plants form part of the natural diversity of phryganic and dry shrubby ecosystems.
Their powerful chemical substances reduce browsing by several herbivorous animals. At the same time, certain specialized insects may use Rutaceae species as food or host plants.
The presence of the plants in rocky and disturbed places contributes to ground cover and the production of organic matter in environments where vegetation is sparse.
Uses and economic importance
Rutaceae is extremely important economically because of citrus fruits. Oranges, lemons, mandarins, grapefruits, limes and other citrus fruits are produced by species and hybrids of the genus Citrus.
Essential oils from the peel, leaves and flowers of citrus plants are used in the food industry, perfumery, cosmetics and the production of cleaning products.
Other members of the family are used as ornamental plants, spices, aromatics, sources of essential oils or raw materials for pharmaceutical substances.
Ruta chalepensis has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine and cultural practices. However, its historical use does not mean that it is safe.
Toxicity and photosensitivity
Ruta chalepensis contains bioactive substances, including furanocoumarins and essential oils. Contact between the plant sap and the skin, combined with exposure to sunlight, may cause phytophotodermatitis.
The reaction may include redness, pain, blistering and later hyperpigmentation of the skin. Symptoms may appear several hours after contact.
The ingestion of a significant quantity of plant material or concentrated preparations may cause serious adverse effects. Use of the plant should be avoided particularly during pregnancy.
Gloves should be worn when handling the plant, and direct exposure of the skin to sunlight should be avoided. Wild plants should not be used for self-treatment.
Threats and protection
The two native species are adapted to open and often disturbed habitats. Their local populations may nevertheless be affected by:
- residential and tourism development,
- the destruction of phryganic habitats,
- quarrying and excavation,
- road construction and widening,
- agricultural intensification,
- the use of herbicides,
- fires,
- excessive collection for traditional uses,
- the spread of competitive alien plants,
- and prolonged drought caused by climate change.
The conservation of open natural areas, rocky slopes, phrygana and uncultivated strips contributes to the protection of both species and the overall floristic diversity of these habitats.
